Okay, so FLG and Marshmallow have both tagged me for separate parts of the same thing that originally was the last two questions of Ask the Marshmallow (which Marshy turned into a meme). They are both good questions, so here we go.
What’s something you’d love to say to your younger selves of 2, 5, 10, and 15 years ago? (Doesn’t necessarily have to be the same thing each time.)
- 2 years ago; I was 20 years old – Study abroad will be the best thing you do during college. Do it! Also try to do as much as you possibly can and experience as many new things as possible while you are still a student. Enjoy being 20!
- 5 years ago; I was 17 years old – Don’t follow what other people do. Maybe you will be weird but make your own choices and choose your own path. The friends you have now may be great but they are not the only people in the world you will befriend and love. Don’t base your future decisions on their plans.
- 10 years ago; I was 12 years old – Middle school will end. High school will be better. College will exceed all expectations. This period of life might suck, but it will end. Your brother will become nicer, you will make friends in the new town, and you won’t hate West Tennessee as much (you will still hate it, just not as much). Don’t listen to all the bad things your family says about you, they are hurting and just need someone to take it out on. Please, please, please don’t turn to food to make it feel better.
- 15 years ago; I was 8 years old – Keep reading. Keep learning. You are doing good. Have fun… :)
What are five things you’ve said or done in the past twelve months that you’re most proud of?
- Graduated college. Four years, lots of papers, lots of reading, LOTS of slacking off at the appropriate times, and I received a college degree for my efforts. Currently I am not using it and I don’t know how I plan to in the future, but I am still very proud of finishing school and being a fancy, smancy college graduate.
- Survived the tornado. I’m not sure how I can explain being proud of this, but I am proud of being part of the community that survived an EF-4 tornado (possibly two tornadoes hit…Im fuzzy on what the weather people said as their final analysis) devastating our school. We came together in a really special way that taught me a lot about faith and community. It was amazing that we could continue learning and rebuild so quickly and I am really proud to have been part of it.
- Got over my fear of public speaking. Okay, to be honest I am not totally over the fear. I still get really nervous and am not always super confident. But the fact is in the last year I have become confident enough to realize I will sometimes need to speak in front of people to be heard. Over the last year I have done presentations, speeches, presented my senior thesis (which won awards, woot!) and done some other speaking in front of mini-crowds (no packed stadiums yet). For me this is a huge deal and I am really proud of having the confidence to face down my fear and get out there and do what must be done.
- Dated. This one has to do with confidence as well. Throughout high school when I weighed the most I never had the confidence to date. Now I am not at my highest weight, not at my lowest either, but I have a new found confidence from trying to stay healthy and treating my body better that has helped me find confidence to be okay with dating. In the last year I finally started dating and it has gone really well and been really fun, despite the few bad dates that are inevitable. :)
- Started blogging. I am not entirely new to blogging, as I kept a personal blog through most of high school and the early years of college. But I am new to blogging in a way that is productive for me. Blogging about weight loss and my health issues and such helps me keep it in my mind as something important. Obviously it doesn’t make me lose weight automatically – I weight more now when I started :( – but it does remind me about my desire to be healthier as well as teach me new things about myself and the process. Its good to be a little introspective about the process.
For me the second question was a lot harder. Why is it so difficult to think of accomplishments or things I have done or said that I am proud of? I can immediately think of things that I regret, but creating a list of 5 positive things took me almost two hours. Hmmm.
I know the point of memes is to tag others …even if they don’t do it (so I tag: Cammy, Heather, Krissie, and Diana) but honestly I want to tag everyone. Everyone who comes here, I want to know what you are proud of doing. Really, let me know:

Great answers!
I’m glad I didn’t get tagged for the second one as I would have had a really tough time coming up with 5 things.
Mary, You better keep a record of all this stuff. Print this out to save it. It will be so interesting to read it again in thirty years. It will also be fun to ask the same questions to yourself as you get older. Some perceptions change and some perceptions will stay the same. It is great you are insightful about yourself! :-)
@FLG: Now I want to tag you. Lol. It was hard for me to come up with 5. How about you tell us all one?
@Sheree: Thanks, that is a great idea.
Thanks for taking part, I loved your answers! :-D
1. Being a good dad.
2. Becoming a better husband.
3. Learning to run.
4. Competing in races.
5. Starting my blog.
:)
@Andrew: Thanks for sharing the things you are proud of! Those are great ones.
