How To Avoid Weight Loss Scams

Steve from Weight Loss Weapons has made a great list of weight loss scam sites pretending to be blogs that are really fake and created only to sell you a product that doesn’t work (i.e. colon cleanse) so the blog owners make lots of money off of unsuspecting people who are trying to change their lives for the better.  I am all for making money online but this kind of stuff is despicable.  Really, it just makes me sick to see weight loss scam spammers commenting on my blog promoting these sites and products.  When I think about all the people that get sucked in and spend their money on that stuff I just feel terrible.  So, check out the list (don’t go to the sites).  Steve explains why the sites are scams and reading through it all will give you a better idea of what to look for.  Don’t be fooled!

Watch Out For These Characteristics of a Weight Loss Scam

  1. Anything that promises fast or easy weight loss.  Quick fixes sound too good to be true because they are.
  2. Anything that lacks scientific evidence.  If there are no studies to support the claims it probably isn’t true.  Testimonials from success stories mean nothing without objective data from science.
  3. Anything that claims weight loss is possible without exercise or diet modifications.  Its not.  Don’t listen to that craziness.
  4. Anything that claims to remove fat from certain body parts.  Everyone wants a part of their body to change, but it just doesn’t work like that.  You can’t make part of your body magically lose fat.
  5. Anything that claims there is one single factor or compound that is stopping you from losing weight.  If they are selling a product they will tell you it is THE thing you are missing.  No one thing is the solution, remember it.
  6. Anything with descriptive language like the words “miracle” and “revolutionary” and “scientific breakthrough.”  Don’t believe the hyperbole on these weight loss scam sites.

I was spammed a few times by one of these acai berry/colon cleanse people, who complimented me on my blogposts and then asked that I visit their site and maybe put them on my blogroll. Haha! I don’t even have a blogroll. I checked out her site and could see immediately that it was rubbish.

There are no quick fixes!

@Hanlie
There are no quick fixes! True that! I am going to update my post to explain that and other ways to spot scams.

Thanks for spreading the word Mary. These sites are all over the place and although it might seem obvious to you or I there are still a lot of people getting taken by them.

Those are great tips on spotting scams. Nice job :)
