I've lost weight, but still revert to shoveling food when I'm stressed, bored, or lonely. Emotional eating is a constant struggle.

There are no easy answers, but for me distraction is the key. I try calling a friend, answering emails, or playing with my cat. Hopefully the evil urges pass!

Let us know if you find the secret to beating emotional eating.

I loved what Eleanor Roosevelt “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” I teach a Women’s Bible Study at a local facility where most of the women are dealing with addictions, abuse, and other issues. The most important thing I tell them is to know who they are and to affirm it. It is not enough to think something, or wish it, they must believe it and one way to accomplish this is to make a list of things they want to change in their lives and to find promises in the Bible: then claim those promises by speaking or proclaiming those promises verbally out loud. I know that sounds crazy, but we need to hear it, and speak it until we believe it. I tell them say it, and say it again until they know, they know, and change will come. We always want the physical to change, but nothing will change until the mental changes. I read the other day; the physical reflects the spiritual and the mental. OUCH! Change comes when we change our thinking.

In your case you might try quotes from famous people like Eleanor Roosevelt and repeat it everyday until you believe. The above quote might sound like this …“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” and I do not give my brother permission to belittle me. Confucius said “Respect yourself and others will respect you.” You might say today “I will respect myself and not expect or demand it from other.” The bottom line is you (as well as myself) need to replace negative thoughts with positive ones and realize no one else can do it for us. No one ate for us we did it to ourselves; we now have to retrain our selves not just physically, but retrain our minds. Best of success and many blessings be yours.

I find a lot of info about emotional eating to be quite factuous. It's easy to tell people to have a relaxing bath or go for a walk, but that isn't really dealing with the issues (and kinda hard to do if you are at work!)

I understand the emotional eating thing. That is so my problem. I am also trying to conquer that one. So far I am doing pretty well. It is becoming a lot easier to not reach for that peice of chocolate every time my baby cries or doesn't take a nap (can you tell I have a problem dealing with stress :)). I think it was more of a habit then anything. At first it was hard to not eat everytime I got a little stressed but after the first week or so of not letting myself do this I am really finding it easier each day. Don't get me wrong. I still struggle every day. It is just a little easier to distract myself when these moments hit me. And yes unfortunately I still have my little binges. Sometimes caused by stress and sometimes just out of plain hunger. Trust me it does get a little easier but as woman I think we will always have to deal with this to some extent. Good Luck. I know this is something you can overcome.
