Anyone find it funny that we celebrate a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla, that commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín?
Yeah, that is what the original holiday is all about. But even though those are the origins, Cinco de Mayo in the rest of the world is a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. I love Mexico and Mexican culture and enjoy celebrating it. I was really upset over the whole swine flu thing because travel to Mexico all but stopped. But at least we can celebrate here!
Of course right after I stop drinking is the day where all I want is Mexican food and margaritas (maybe they should stop chatting about these things on Twitter. For those of you still indulging, go have some yummy goodness for me. I will try to hit the gym hard and I know that will raise my spirits more than a celebratory dinner ever could. Happy Cinco de Mayo!!
