Adventures in Cake Making

in Food & Nutrition

Since I’ve been home from BlogHer I’ve had a lot of time on my hands.  A LOT of time.  I’ve been trying to find various things to fill my time since finding a temporary job isn’t happening.  I’ve also asked for suggestions for things to do on twitter.  I’ve done different things like running up & down 16+ flights of stairs thanks to workoutmommy.   I’ve done some other things to fill the time… like making cake and cake like products.

CAKE IN A BOWL

When I say cake like products, what I really mean is I made cake-in-a-bowl.  It was another twitter suggestion for something to do with my time.  This particular suggestion came from mara.  It sounded quite idiot proof so I gave it a whirl and documented the experiment for you guys.

Step 1: Gather ingredients.

Step 2: Add 1 egg to a bowl.

Step 3: Add 1/4 c. sugar to the bowl.

Step 4: Add 1/2 c. flour to the bowl.

Step 5: Add 2 Tbsp cocoa powder to the bowl.

Step 6: Add 1 tsp oil to the bowl.

Step 7: Mix the contents of the bowl.

Step 8: Microwave the bowl.

Step 9: Enjoy your cake-in-a-bowl!

And there it is!  Not the prettiest thing in the world, but it works.  I’m not a huge fan of it because I generally prefer eating the real thing instead of a substitute.  However, it was a fun distraction making the cake-in-a-bowl and could totally suffice in a pinch when something sweet is wanted.

OPERATION SUPER SECRET SURPRISE BICYCLE BIRTHDAY CUPCAKE CAKE

Because I have so much time I loaned my awesome cake making skills to one of my best friends for some cupcake and cake making yesterday.  We spent 3 hours making a cake for her husband’s surprise birthday party tonight.  I’m pretty sure we are now the most awesome people alive, because the party tonight will be epic.  He has no idea it is happening and no idea that we made him this:

That’s right!  It is a bicycle cake!!  It is made from 2 9-in cakes, 48 cupcakes, lots of icing and love.  I wish I had a better picture of it.  I will try to take one tonight at the party so you can see it better.  But needless to say, it is AWESOME and we are the CAKE BOSSES!!

That’s awesome! What an awesome way to spend the day! What are the nutritional stats for the cake in a bowl?

5 Cammy@TippyToeDiet August 6, 2009 at 7:58 pm

You ARE geniuses!

I might have to try that cake in a bowl. But first, I’d have to buy all the ingredients. Except for the eggs. I have those. :)

The bicycle cake is more awesome than a bicycle kick. And those are pretty stinking awesome. Nice work.

@MackAttack
Um, around 150 cals or like 3 points on WW. So says Mara. :)

@Cammy
Hahaha. I went shopping today and spent way too much money on groceries!

I’d say no to the cake in a bowl!! (I’ve seen this done in a coffee mug too), but a big YES to the bicycle cake. I love making cakes, and it’s a really good thing, because with NINE birthdays each year in our family, we have a lot of cakes!

You rock! The bike cake is amazing… Now can you make me a fat free, low calorie, packed with nutrients brownie that looks like Chris Daughtry? C’mon… give it a try. I would love it!!

That looks sort of like a microwave steam pudding. Pop a mars bar (milky way bar) in the middle while it’s cooking :D

Nice job on the cupcake cake!

Interesting and informative. But will you write about this one more?

I love my cake in a mug—but the ingredients are such that no one else in the family will eat it : )

the bowl? I think yes.

now
wheres the cake shaped like a dumbbell?

I just recently found a recipe for a Buttered Almond Cake. My two kids love that kind, and they both have birthdays in mid-August. I’m going to give it a try in making it (and a try in not eating it) this weekend.
Thanks for the inspiration Mary!

That is so weird. However, it probably tasted very good!

17 Robin August 7, 2009 at 8:00 am

18 Merry Mary August 7, 2009 at 9:08 am

@Angie
I don’t think I can do that, lol.

@Miz
Ooo a dumbbell? I will get working on that!

@Robin

Microwaved cake in a bowl? Umm… glad you liked it I think I’ll skip trying it :) the bike cake is another matter, it looks really cool, creative and im sure it was yummy!

23 Jackson Ng August 9, 2009 at 9:08 am

wow! looks yummy. Very creative too! It really stirred up your appetite with such a nice looking cake

However, all those process carbo is extremely harmful. Should reduce the frequency if you want to control your weight well. One way is to keep a journal. Reduce the frequency of harmful food and yet able to have fun occasionally. Life without lovely food will be meaningless, keep it as a reward once in a while.

Really enjoy your blog. Happy blogging!

That is awesome. You’re so creative. I’m no baker or chef. I make a mean chicken & dumplings, but that’s about it.

Awesome cake! I can’t wait to try the cake in a bowl. I’ve been buying those god awful expense little microwavable bowl cakes (individual ones) because they are good in a pinch and you don’t have to make a cake that serves twenty thousand people, which is a problem when there is only two people in the house. Your recipe will be much cheaper!
