Ask Mary Anything: Future Edition

in Ask Mary Anything

Since I’ve got less than a month left at Green Mountain at Fox Run, I’ve been thinking a lot about what is next.  It turns out you guys are curious about the next step too. So here are a few questions about life after I leave.

First, chocolateprn asked me:

What are your plans for when this is finished?

Ah, great question!  Since I’ve realized how useless it is for me to plan the future, I’ve stopped trying.  I only plan a few months ahead now and even then leave lots of room for possibilities.  When I leave Vermont I will be headed back to Memphis.  I will be staying with one of my best friends, but I haven’t decided which one yet.  I will be hanging around and spending time with my friends and family through the holidays.  Hopefully I can pick up some work while I am home.  Then in January, January 13th to be exact, I’m leaving for New Zealand to visit Kepa.  I will be there through Feb 17th at which time I will once again return to Memphis.  After that the only thing I know for sure is that I will be attending fitbloggin’ 10 in March.  Everything else is up in the air.

And Jody asked:

How do you envision yourself in the future.. do you have a pic in your mind? If you could do anything you wanted, what would it be?

When I think about my future I don’t imagine specific things.  Like I said, I don’t plan for the future in a way that is based in reality, because I know so many things can happen and change plans.  I will sometimes think about certain events I hope will happen like getting married or buying a house or whatever, but generally I just think about the kind of person I want to be.  I don’t know what my career will be or where I will be living, but I picture myself as still being silly and acting young, staying active and always trying new things, being a good person who is caring and others can come to for help.  That kind of thing.  When I picture the future I just picture who I want to be and try to work every day to be more like that person.

As far as if I could do anything I wanted… can I just write and travel and do fun things?  I’ve accepted the fact that I need to somehow figure out a way to be a professional writer, but I’m not quite sure how that will come about.  I’m okay with doing other things since I’ve got a lot of interests, but I enjoy thinking and writing above anything else.  So if I have a choice that is what I would want to do.

And Corporate Gifts (really? really?) asked me about size:

What size you are targeted?

I assume you mean what size do I want to be physically.  To be honest I’m not sure.  Right now I’m a 16 bottom and M/L top.  Lowest I’ve ever been is a 14 and M.  So I’m close to that now and I have no idea how small I would want to be.  I guess my plan is to just feel it out and see what size my body ends up at as it gets healthier and continues to tone up with all the activity I’m doing.  I’m thinking I’ll probably be comfortable around a 10 or 12, but who knows really.  Another thing I can’t plan.

That’s it for today.  It definitely snowed here today and I’ve been a little lazier because of it.  Normally I write in the morning but I waited until after lunch.  None of the snow stuck but it made me even more excited for the mountain to open soon.  I can’t wait!

So as you can see, I’m not a big planner.  Are you?  Do you plan ahead?  Do you make 5, 10, 20 year life plans?  Or do you go with the flow like me?

So where are the snow pictures? It is really beautiful here, about 67 and sunny! Yeah for Memphis! Your brother has to go for another blasting to his left kidney, and then he will be stone free. Tyson and Jerry are great friends, you should see them, so cute.
I like the idea of not taking the future to seriously, isn’t that what the Lord said “take no thought of tomorrow, for we have no promise of it”! Whatever comes I know you will do great, you have overcome the tallest mountains already, can’t see to much that can hold you back.
I love you and can’t wait to see you. Be safe and have a great rest of your time there. You doing anything special this weekend? I will mail your coat tomorrow!

I’m a planner, for sure. Things don’t always go according to my plans, however, and this upsets me greatly! Sometimes I wish I could “fly by the seat of my pants.”

I am a HUGE planner. Sometimes it’s a problem because I feel like I’m always looking into the future and I may not be concentrating enough on the here and now. Still, planning and looking forward to things is how I have been about to accomplish most of my goals in life, so I figure it will also work (in moderation) with weight loss.

I’m a partial planner, depends on the subject.

I love the note from your Mom, it made me feel all warm and fuzzy. :-)

@MOM
Thanks for the update. :) Hehe.

@Beth
Me too! I’m so excited to meet you and everyone else!!

@Janet
That’s why I try not to plan. It can be really upsetting when things don’t go according to plan, so I’d rather avoid that happening.

@Bella
You generally can’t get what you want without some planning. I’m just not overly rigid with it. :)

@Tina
hehe. Apparently she likes to leave me blog comments instead of email or call. It works. :)

I have spent most of my life thinking of the past. I haven’t spent much time on the future. That has changed though. If I could have guessed at 21 where I would be a 36, it would not be where I am now.

It’s still a trip to me how long it’s gonna take for you to get here, just from the 13th. The countdown will be continuing while you’re in the air, and in Aussie :D

You mentioned about being the kind of person you want to be. I think you’re already all those things, and I don’t see that changing.

As for planning, 20, 10, 5 even kind of seems a bit too long. However, thanks to the awesome acting principal at my mum’s school, I have a 10 year plan :D Well, an outline, a guide if you will. My own personal plan, again, it’s more of an outline and it involves 3 years, but you already know all that and I don’t exactly feel like sharing :D

I’m definitely not a big planner. This almost never go according to plan, honestly.

Just love hearing all this & thx for answering my question!

I used to be a big planner when I was younger & I got so burned out on life & corporate life I was leading that I am having a hard time getting back to plans & so forth. I am older so thinking about 5, 10 20 years from now is not like when I was 25… it is scary too…. BUT I think I should at least set some life plans vs. just fitness plans.. That I am good at! :-)

I don’t plan. Well, i plan for maybe the next week or something. I always like to know what i’m doing that weekend… and during the week its pretty much the same. but as far as long term goals, nope not at all. its like a giant blank.. sounds like youre going to have a great next few months!!! :)

I have to say that just going with the flow is the best thing for day-to-day things. I think there comes a balance between planning and expecting everything to fall into place. i know some people that had specific dates for when they wanted to get married and by when they wanted to have children. They would marry the wrong people or sprial downward because they weren’t able to get into the place they dreamed of being into. I think that making plans or aspirations for yourself is the best thing that you can do. I want to be a nurse. So I am taking a shiza load of loans out, quitting my job, etc…to make it happen. I know that I have to get specific things done, but stressing out about finances and stuff like that has proven me no good luck. I think there’s a bit to planning, a bit to following your heart, and a lot of trust in people.

I think Ive become both mre and less of a planner as I age.
More in the sense of my mission statements (spiritual personal etc ) so I have a framework by which to live my life and a very open “goal” for that aspect of my world—-but LESS in the structured non flexible specificity of it all.

Planning to far ahead always leaves me overwhelemed, so I just don’t bother. Taking things one day at a time always seems to work better for me. Visiting FLG? Sounds like it will be fun :).
