Weekly Weigh In: The Holiday Gain

by Mary on December 27, 2009

in Weight Loss

Well, well, well. It’s time to climb out of the holiday haze I was in this past week and make my way back to the blog for my weekly weigh in. I have to be honest – I was not looking forward to this. After three days straight of holiday festivities and way more food than I needed or even wanted, I finally got back on track with myself just yesterday. And although I am okay with what happened, it doesn’t look promising for weight loss at the weigh in.

I did have a good week. My mom makes great food when she does cook and I enjoyed eating it. I enjoyed being with my family for the most part, and when I didn’t I was supported by the wonderful Christmas gifts of chocolate and alcohol. So, yeah, it was a good little holiday for me. I just wish I had not gone into what amounts to a food coma. I didn’t feel hungry once in the three days I spent at home. I ate when other people ate and at the end of the day realized I never waited long enough in between meals to feel physical hunger, like I had planned. That goal I set for myself flew out the window as soon as I got home, sadly. But yesterday I woke up and waited until I was hungry for breakfast and then waited until I was hungry for lunch and the same for dinner. Not once did I look at a clock to plan my meal or check to see when someone else was eating and it was glorious!

Beyond the food part of the week, I also didn’t exercise much at all! I walked with my family one day of the week and then only walked again twice before the holidays and neither time was it even a mile. Pretty lame on the exercise front around here. My muscles feel like they are dying from non-use. I’m ready to jump back on the strength training wagon next week. I’m sure my body will appreciate it after the initial complaints. ;)

WEEKLY WORKOUTS

Monday December 21:

1 hour walking – 2.5 miles

Tuesday December 22:

15 minutes walking .7 miles

Wednesday December 23:

15 minutes walking .7 miles

Thursday – Sunday?

NADA.

All this rambling means nothing if I don’t get around to the point of this post: the weekly weigh in! Eek! Here we go:

WEEKLY WEIGH IN:

Current Weight: 219.4
Previous Weight: 217.8
Weight loss: +1.6
Starting Weight: 251
Weight loss total: -31.6

Okay, so I gained 1.6 pounds.  In a week.  Hehe.  I almost thought about skipping this weigh in because I knew it would be a gain, but that is silly.  It’s not like it matters and it’s not like it’s extreme.  But I’m back to my normal eating and soon will be back to exercising, so I’m not worried.

The lesson in this week?  Of course you are going to gain weight if you overeat and do no exercise.  It’s not exactly rocket science as to why I weigh more this week than I did last week.  But for those of you who think you can just give up all the exercise and eat what you want again when you finish your diet… take note.  It doesn’t work that way.  You have to be consistent.  Weeks of fun and weeks of gaining are fine and totally a good thing for you to have if you want to stay sane, but you can’t just diet and lose a ton of weight then stop.  You will just put weight on again (at least for most of us).  It’s a healthy living forever, dude!

So, I’m chalking this week up to what it was, survival via food and booze, and moving on to a better and healthier week.

How about you all?  How did you do throughout the Christmas week?  Did the cookies get the best of you or did you have an awesome week?

Not bad….I think a gain during the holidays is expected. I’m proud of you for getting some exercise. :)

I’m working all of this out in my head because I want my life to be difference when I’m done with my protocol. I always want to be able to enjoy myself during the holidays…but I need to stop enjoying myself so much on a daily basis.

Have a great day!

I had a run-in with a bottle of real cream eggnog with rum, brandy and whiskey that accounted for my half-pound gain this week, but I’m gearing up for a big push come the new year.

I think I had unrealistic expectations about the holiday season. It really is a tough time of year for losing weight. It wasn’t the tempting treats that got me so much (eggnog not inlcuded); it was the stress of too many errands, too many parties, too much to do and too little time to do it. I’m hoping to get back in my good groove next week.

I had a nice little time with eggnog and whiskey myself. Yummmmmmm. Honestly I wasn’t big on the treats, just lots of alcohol and bigger meals than normal. Stress is a HUGE factor that no one thinks about… stress causes you to gain weight. Holidays are stressful. End of story.

I wanna hit the groove again next week too. We can do it! :)

I think what you said in the last part of this post is great… The fact is, even when we get to our goal weight, we can’t splurge. So this is just a good foreshadow that this is something We will work on for the rest of our lives!

I’m glad that you decided to be honest with yourself and weigh-in this week. You’re right, even though a gain isn’t great, it’s NOT a big deal. It’s clear that you’ve made a lot of progress over the past few months. You’re only going to get stronger and stronger. :)

I have to admit i slack off over Christmas but i always get back to business on boxing day :)

7 'Drea December 27, 2009 at 4:36 pm

Honey maple sweet mashed potatoes and TJ’s Ultimate Vanilla Wafers were about the most decadent things that I indulged in and I exercised every day of Christmas week — just in case I had a notion to really indulge.

It is a “for life” thing! And that’s why these blips don’t matter in the long run :) And you’re already getting back into it. Strength training, woo! :)

I miss you.

9 Mary December 27, 2009 at 4:43 pm

Hehe, blips don’t matter! Yeah… the long run is what I’m aiming for. I gotta get back into gear and start strength training for real!

And I miss you too.

I ate a piece of peppermint cheesecake that was not on my agenda. I still lost around a pound over the last few days so it pisses me off I ate that cheesecake. It makes me think I could have lost more if I wouldn’t have. Oh well I’m over it.

Peppermint cheesecake? Oh my! That sounds interesting. Hehe.

Yeah, don’t worry too much over one thing!

I think it’s important to post your weight loss throughout the weeks..even if you may gain. I used to do the same thing..I don’t want to weigh-in per say because then I will have to prove that I gained and I only ever want to lose.

The great thing about holiday weight, is it’s easily remedied by bouncing back into a positive routine.

You know what is the best (or one of many best things…) about you, Mary!? You’re so darn honest! Love that you did weigh in this week and put it honestly and bluntly as “of course you’re going to gain weight if you overeat and don’t exercise”. I mean – you’re so right – that is the bottom line and we know it. But we USED to try to hedge that truth. So high five, sister… you’re tellin’ it like it is, accepting that 1.6 for what it is and ready to tackle 2010! : ) You rock!

I try to be honest, with myself first and then everyone else. Sometimes it is hard though! …. Yeah, we are totally going to rock 2010! :)

Life is for learning & yes, if we start eating again more than we need, we gain. BUT, as you said, you will be back to it with better food choices & exercising. That is the important part. To get back to it as soon as possible because for many, the longer you wait, the harder it is to get back. That is why that right back to it “rule” is key. Sounds like that is where you are headed! :-)

16 Diane Fit to the Finish December 27, 2009 at 7:39 pm

Christmas was fun for us, quiet with just us, but then again we can be pretty loud! Don’t worry about that slight gain, it will go away just as soon as you get back on track!

Take care,
Diane

I gained 3 pounds over the last three weeks because I had to eat out a ton. But most of it was water weight because I didn’t drink a ton of water and ate a ton of sodium.

This morning it was down 1 pound so I know that it wasn’t all real weight. You’re probably the same with a bit of that “gain.”

19 Cammy@TippyToeDiet December 27, 2009 at 9:11 pm

Not a bad gain for a holiday celebration! And kudos for getting back on track.

My only real disappointment was that I didn’t get as much authentic exercise as I wanted last week (stupid Memphis weather), but I got started again on yesterday. So the big picture is still in tact. :)

“Normal” eating means eating more sometimes, and not always due to physical hunger. If we’re listening to our bodies, it evens out over the long run. We won’t be as hungry at subsequent meals/weeks as our bodies use up the additional we ate. You’re doing great, Mary!

1.6 lbs is not bad.yes it’s a gain but I feel like it’s a small gain and pretty easy to rectify.

My xmas week went ok until I got to the weekend. Then cookies & cakes and the big 3 sectioned tin of different popcorns starting comng out of the woodwork. I ate them and they were so good but I made sure I got in at least 30 mins of exercise so I wouldn’t feel too horrible.

23 Sagan December 28, 2009 at 11:00 am

The cookies got the best of me, too. Ah well. Time to get back into gear! At least it was an enjoyable holiday, even with the food coma.
