Weekly Weigh In: Travel Crazy

by Mary on January 11, 2010

in Weight Loss

Last week I spent most of the week on vacation with my mom, which means I ate a majority of my meals out at fast food places or at real restaurants. I even ate at a buffet once – mmm Chinese food. But after a week of this I realized I didn’t do too bad! My weigh in didn’t even show a gain! Sweet!

WEEKLY VIDEO CHECK IN

MY STRATEGY FOR EATING OUT

We all know eating out can be tricky. It’s tough. I didn’t make the best choices all the time, but I tried to make those good choices about 80% of the time. And that is what helped me get through the week I think. What were the good choices?  I mentioned some in the video.

Get a healthy protein.  Choose something like grilled or baked fish instead of a greasy battered filet of fish.

Choose veggie sides. Sometimes you don’t want them but you know you need them.  Choose steamed veggies instead of fries sometimes to do yourself a favor.

Choose the kids meal. I started doing this and it really helped. It’s enough food for me when I want to eat the less healthy stuff but it still stays under 500 calories for a meal.  It is a great solution when you really want to eat the stuff.

WEEKLY WORKOUTS

Monday 1/4 : 2 miles walked

Tuesday 1/5 : Upper body workout

Wednesday 1/6 : none

Thursday 1/7 : 4 miles walked

Friday 1/8 : 5 miles walked

Saturday 1/9 : 2 miles walked

Sunday 1/10 : none

Light exercise week!

WEEKLY WEIGH IN

Current Weight: 218.9
Previous Weight: 218.9
Weight loss: 0
Starting Weight: 251
Weight loss total: -32.1

I’ll take it.  As long as gains are not happening then this is a good thing!

CHECK THIS OUT

I’m part of the new Two Fit Chicks and a Microphone podcast!!  I’m so surprised they would let me say something!  I mean, everyone else included is so much smarter and SUCCESSFUL in their own weight loss journeys.  They all lost the weight and I’m the yo-yo of the bunch, apparently.  Did you see that?  How I just let myself compare myself to other bloggers and I came out on the bottom?  Argh.  It’s a constant battle to not compare yourself negatively… but I’m not deleting that, just changing my mindset to this:  I’m glad I was included even though I’m at a different point in my own health journey.  I might not be at my goal like all of the others included, but the podcast is about beginnings (Month’s theme is Getting Started in 2010!) and I’m definitely past the beginning in this adventure, and sometimes getting started is the hardest part.  So check out the podcast when you get the chance.

I LEAVE FOR NEW ZEALAND IN TWO DAYS!!!

Good thoughts on eating out. I always try to get grilled chicken and veggie sides if I can.

Good job maintaining on vacation, I always think that is one of the hardest things to do.

And have fun in NZ!

Hey hey, you didn’t gain! WooT! Great eating out tips as well, I’ve definitely been trying to go (for the most part) more for the salads then the fries. Be better if I didn’t just eat out ALL THE FRICKIN’ TIME, but um..yeah…

:)

I like your idea to choose kid’s meals if all else fails. We can apply that to getting kiddie sizes for popcorn at movie theatres and such, too!

Wow! I don’t think I could have done as well as you! Great job! I’ve also started using the kids menu as a way to keep the calories down at fast food places, especially now that you can opt for a “healthy” side with the kids meals.

I too maintained after my 2 weeks at home and it’s a good feeling to know that you weren’t focused on your regime, you lived life, and you maintained. That it’s a mindset change and not a short term goal.

Have fun packing and preparing for the BIG trip!

Maintaining on vacation, go you! Definitely a challenge, the kid’s menu idea is a good one if I ever get stuck doing fast food, tucked away for later, thanks.

14 Randi January 11, 2010 at 3:16 pm

I never thought about getting a kids meal, I am going to try that.

15 Kelly January 11, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Great job on maintaining during vacation! Vacations and holidays can be tough times to be super dedicated to weight loss-especially when you are presented with foods you don’t get every day. I don’t even try to lose during these times anymore because I don’t want to set myself up for failure. It looks like you also incorporated lots of activity through your walks (the pictures are beautiful!) which is great. For a lot of us vacation means sitting on a beach and not moving for several days…which does have its appeal, but it’s probably better that you did get some activity in.

I love the idea about the kid’s meals! I try to eat healthy a majority of the time when I go out to eat, but sometimes I can’t resist those unhealthy choices. Going for the kid’s meal is a really good way of controlling your portions though. I’ll definitely try that during those dark times when I don’t think I’ll survive with out a french fry, haha.

Also, I’ve been reading your blog for a while and it’s so inspirational to me! I just started a blog. It’s nothing fancy, but I think it helps keep me in check. Thank you for sharing your journey with us! And have fun on your trip! :)

I am the master at eating healthy on the road. I have no fear or no shame in asking for specially prepared meals…hold the this, add the that! My nephews hate to eat out with me as this embarrasses them to no end!

Congrats on no gains!! That’s awesome! I’m sooo sorry you’re sick. I hope the worst of the congestion is over before you get on the plane. I’ve flown that way interisland and I thought my face was going to explode. (Note I’m writing this when you’re already on the plane so as not to freak you out! LOL) Wishing you a safe flight to Australia!
