Vacation Eating

Being on vacation (for real) I’m pretty much eating with no restrictions. For instance today I ate toast with peanut butter and honey for breakfast. For lunch I had wontons (deep fried goodness) with some chicken fried rice (very little) and some fries. Then I had two scoops of ice cream including white chocolate raspberry and spicy apple crumble (delicious). For dinner we split a calimari appetizer, I had a chicken burger with avocado, cheese and garlic mayonnaise with french fries, and then we split an apple strudel. Oh, and at dinner I drank a coke which is very unusual for me as I haven’t drank many cokes since kicking the habit a few years ago. All in all it feels like I didn’t overeat but the choices could have been better. Isn’t that how vacation eating goes?

I’ve had some really great food since I’ve been on this vacation. Like rigatoni with spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, and feta in panna sauce. And chicken with camembert and apricots, and veggies on the side. And a chicken, red onion, cream cheese panini. And a pumpkin hummus, feta, roast capsicums and sun-dried tomato panini.  If I was a foodie blogger I’d be a huge failure because I never took any pictures of all this great meals. But I promise these things were all delicious.

It’s been nice eating GOOD food as well as the “bad” (have I ever eaten so many french fries?) but I think it is what summoned up all the doubts about losing weight and keeping it off for real this time. If I am always taking a week or two off of eating healthy to try every new good food I possibly can – then how will I lose weight? But then I remember that I’ve gone on vacations and not gained weight, like when I went to Gatlinburg. I even know all the tips for eating healthy on the road and eating out. But for some reason this time I’ve completely abandoned those ideas in order to try new things (quail) and eat things I enjoy (spicy apple crumble ice cream anyone?). It’s been freaking fantastic, but it brings up a lot of thoughts about how I have to live my life.

Like how I can’t just eat with reckless abandon.

Like how I need to eat healthier things at least most of the time.

Like how if I ever decide to stop doing all the healthy stuff everything will just fall apart. So that’s where the doubts came from. Their origins, if you will. But when I take a minute to think about it I know that a vacation is a vacation and when it is over I will go back to doing all the things that I need to do to get and stay healthy. No need to worry about it so much.

And as for the whole losing weight, reaching a new territory, and staying there? Well, I won’t know until I try. I won’t know what my body can do until I push it. I won’t know how I feel at a lower weight until I reach it. So that’s all there is too it. I have to keep trying and see where I end up on this particular journey.

But for now I’m going to keep enjoying my vacation and eating delicious food that Kepa sometimes has to talk me into trying (ah, quail). And I’ll worry about the nitty gritty of continuing to lose weight once I get back to Auckland.

There’s something to be said about what you eat..but it’s also important to just listen to your body.

Keep enjoying your time there. :)

I do listen to my body. It’s not that I’m overeating or anything, it’s just that my body is saying “fried foods! cheese! dessert all the time! this is vacation!” And I’m listening to that. HAha.

I think you are right to enjoy yourself if you were sat working out what you could and couldn’t have it would ruin it for me. I have worked hard to lose weight for the majority of the last two years and thankfully I have got on the right path but when I go away it is like taking a break from my normal life. I take appetite suppressants which I find helps as it stops me snacking which used to be my biggest downfall

Keep having fun Mary but as your other commenter said, listen to the bod too. You can still have fun & enjoy without going to an extreme. I think you are learning about your bod so it should tell you if you have gone too far. You are keeping very busy & active which really helps!

Hugs!

If it all seems daunting don’t try to change all your habits overnight. Aim for 2-3 small improvements each week. Build up to eating more supportively and moving a little more than yesterday. These small changes will add up to big improvements over time.

This truly is the opportunity of a lifetime. As a fellow blogger I admire your ability to be 100% honest with the readers. It would be just as easy to avoid full disclosure in the what-you’ve-been-eating realm. Nice work!

I’m always honest. At least there is that. ;)

Honestly, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with letting loose a bit while you’re on holiday. Even the healthiest, fittest people I know talk about needing to drop the 5 pounds they put on while they were vacationing. In fact, that sort of flux probably is healthy.

It’s getting back into the swing of things once you’re not on vacation that’s difficult, at least for me. As long as you’re committed to living a healthy life, then a 2 week vacation of wontons and ice cream is just that, 2 weeks.

Ack! Im already starving and have nothing here to eat till dinner in 4 hrs and your food is making me hungrier! LOL mmm I LOVE fried calamari. Esp with spicy sauce. Ooh that rigatoni and the chicken sound so good! I love fruit mixed with meat! Mmm pumpkin hummus ive never heard of that? It sounds delicious, was it sweet? Quail just tastes like less good chicken to me, but maybe it’s the way ive had it prepared. The only thing I’m worried about on my weeklong vacation in san diego next month is not getting enough regular exercise. OH! But your mini golf post the other day inspired me to ask my friend I’ll be visiting if there’s a course near them, and there is, so now we have plans to all go mini golfing, and I’m hoping to not get beat by a 4 year old lol. I think its good to expand your palate by trying out new foods and it doesn’t sound like youre going overboard.

I celebrated my birthday yesterday at Disneyland with 1.5 small pizzas. Not slices, whole pizzas. (Naples) Today I weighed 4 pounds more. Today I’m back to eating food I packed in the morning (a great trick for portioning the day) as I’ve been doing for months now and losing weight. Happy I fell back into a pattern that works for me. Keep looking for what works for you. Takes a long period of consistency to pull it off, but you can definitely do it! Best!

Your body deserves that and most of all is your taste buds. I am not really into that thing. I eat what I like but only in moderation.

I love peanut butter and honey sandwiches. One of my favourites.

I’ve always found longer vacations dangerous as they can quite easily lead to a few months of not eating healthy and then it is a long hard struggle to get back into the groove of things.

That is partly what I am/was scared of – getting used to being off track. If you do it for so long you want to keep doing it (just like healthy habits). So an extended vacation is a bit tricky. That’s why the vacation is ending this week and I’m treating being back in Auckland like being “home” where healthiness rules.
