The Vacation Is Over

That’s right. I’m still in New Zealand, but the vacation part of my trip is over. We might go on a few more quick day trips while I’m here, but the full on act-like-a-tourist, eat-whatever-I-want, have-so-much-fun-I-can’t-stand-it vacation stuff is over. It was a super fun week.

Today we went to the last thing I wanted to see, which was something involving volcanic/thermal activity. If I am going to be around all these volcanoes I might as well see some cool stuff. So we went to Wai-o-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland in the Wai-o-Tapu area of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, which is about halfway between Taupo and Rotorua. We went there mainly because they have a geyser that erupts every day at 10:15 (with some help from soap). I’ve never seen a geyser, so it was pretty cool for the first couple minutes.

After we saw the geyser we walked through the park to see all the different types of activity.

Kepa had fun standing on and touching things he probably shouldn’t have. (Okay, I touched the water in a few places too. Shhh.)

Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland

It was a pretty interesting little adventure, and now I never have to go to anything like that again since my curiosity is satisfied.  Today we took full advantage of the fact that it was our last day of proper vacation. In other words, we once again ate terribly. For breakfast I had toast with peanut butter and honey and then for lunch we had fish and chips:

Fish and Chips Lunch

This was followed by the two of us splitting FOUR desserts. Yes four. This is what evolved from the beginning of our dessert choosing when I asked if Kepa wanted to split one or each get our own. Instead we each got two of our own then shared.

Four Desserts!

OMG, right? Half was delicious and then the other two were so so. We ended up only eating about half, as you can assess from the damage we did.

After Four Desserts!

We also ate pizza for dinner and split a piece of cheesecake.  Ah, not exactly the way you lose weight people.  (Is this even a weight loss blog anymore?  Geez!)  But vacation eating is so lovely and I will miss it.

Now that I’m back in Auckland I’m ready to just hang around, meet more people (Kepa’s friends), get back to working out and eating healthy. I weigh in tomorrow and I can tell you now that it is a gain. Even though we both ate on similar levels of crappiness (weight loss wise) the last week I do believe Kepa will post a loss while I post a gain. It’s quite depressing when I think about how easy it is for me to regain weight. I can gain 5 lbs in a week and then it will take me a month to lose that. Oh well! It is what it is and tomorrow I’m hopping back on the weight loss train. I’m going back to eating healthy things and will figure out how to challenge myself with workouts. My back is feeling better and after resting a bit today I should be ready to go. I’ll post more about how I decide to tackle this later when I post my weigh in results.  I’m just ready to get going and make things happen.

I’m so glad you had a great vacation. I hear you on gaining easily on vacation only to watch the man in your life lose weight! So not fair!

Y’all have done great things for NZ tourism. Looks like such a fun place!

2 Mary January 30, 2010 at 3:54 pm

I should have gotten this trip sponsored by New Zealand tourism industry! Haha.

And yeah… not fair on the weight thing. But it’s how it goes.

Thanks for stopping by my blog :)

That water is crazy looking!! I can’t believe you touched it :)

The desserts….YUM!!!

4 Tyler January 30, 2010 at 8:21 am

You could’ve at least eaten all of the meringue.

Haha. I don’t really like it and Kepa got it to try it and it wasn’t very good. No point in eating something if it isn’t good!

The geyser pics are sooo cool! :) And you’ll get back to “non-vacation” eating, and you’ll be fine! It’s a journey, and sometimes we take a few detours when it comes to losing weight, but it’s okay as long as we get back on our regular path… Yeah, I guess I’m all about metaphors this morning… ;)

Enjoy the rest of your stay!!!!!!

SUCH cool pics!! I’ve been reading about all your adventures, and I have to say I’m beyond impressed! I freaked out on a water trike in Jamaica and you freaking went bungee jumping! You’ll get back to non-vacation eating soon… i do feel you on the taking a month to lose 5 lbs it took a week to gain… I’m still working on honeymoon weight!

I am like a pack mule when it comes to weight. I can pack it on in no time.

Have fun for the remainder of your time.

Pack mule. Hahahaha.

I think 90% of women gain on vacation so don’t feel too badly about it. Learning how to deal with life (ie: vacations) is just part of the weight loss game. The desserts look delicious ;)

I had to come and get all caught up! You are living the life WOW!! You two are just so cute together and it is awesome that you have so many common interests. That is a very good thing :)
Get your food back in check girl! When you eat 2-4 desserts it makes me HUNGRY!!!!

While you mightn’t be a fan of positive thinking like “The Secret” etc, I’d be wary of saying and writing negative things like “I can gain 5 lbs in a week and then it will take me a month to lose that” you might think its true but don’t affirm those thoughts.

14 Mary January 30, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Well, I’m just writing something that is a proven fact. So, it’s less negative thinking, just how it goes. I’m not upset about it. It sucks, but as long as I eventually do lose the weight I don’t care at all how long it takes me.

15 Anonymous Fat Girl January 30, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Sounds like you had a great time! Don’t you just hate how men can lose so easily? I know my husband can cut out soda and just miraculously drop 10 lbs in a week or two. Pisses me off. lol

Loved the geyser pics! I went to Old Faithful & the geyser parks here in the US as a kid.. Yellowstone & Grand Tetons. Although I was young, I remember it. Amazing!

I hear you on weight gain. That is why I still try to eat pretty good when I vacation. For me at 5″1″, 5 lbs & my clothes don’t fit! :-)

PS: comment luv picking up my yesterday post again today… doing it on all the blogs.. don’t know why!

I’m only 5’2″ so I feel ya on the short person weight gain. If you are taller it’s not a big deal, but 5 pounds is sooo much on us.

I’m glad comment luv is finally working for you! Yay!

18 The Merry January 30, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Whenever someone asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said ‘taller.’ Because that’s what I wanted. Sigh.
(Well yes, 5’3 is taller than 5’2, but still!)

Love the pictures. Thank you for letting me tour NZ with you!

Mary, Mary, Mary, you would not believe how badly I want to kick yo ass for eating like this during your vacation.
Reason 1: All that food looks amazing & I’m jealous your eating it not me.
Reason 2: It’s going to be tough losing the weight you gained
BUT
I have complete faith in your ability to lose it, so get your butt into gear & do so..

Words of love my friend

Indulgence is TOTALLY needed. But yes, then it’s time to get back to reality.

…Your reality of being over there still sounds like a dream ;) New Zealand must be amazing!

It looks and sounds like you guys have been having an awesome time. And that’s the most important thing. Yes, there may be a gain on the scale but you’ll get back on track. And I’m going to wager that for all the annoyance of a gain, you wouldn’t have missed these meals and experiences for the world!

I love that you are able to roll with the punches while you are on vacation. I would be stressing out like a mad women with guilt and anxiety if I were to gain weight when I feel like I have been working so hard. But through strong and capable women like yourself I am able to rationally evaluate my so called weight loss failures and not make them excuses to quit. No matter what it is important to remember that I am able to rebound and keep moving forward or spend another year bitching about what I hate about me. I choose option number 1. Thanks for being a great motivation!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahh I LOVE your blog and since I lived in NZ for 3 years I loved reading about your trip and I thought I simply had to give you a quick comment and shout out! I too over indulged this weekend, but life goes on. It does? it does! Eat, Drink and Be Merry, for tomorrow? Tomorrow we diet!

26 All Women Stalker January 31, 2010 at 8:33 am

Looks like vacation was a blast! A little indulgence here and there shouldn’t be too bad. Go girl!

27 josie January 31, 2010 at 9:47 am

Sadder four words have never been written…”The vacation is over”…

It’s going to be so hard to say goodbye to NZ, all the fun you had, all the great food, and of course Kepa…If anyone can get back into the swing of things and come back even stronger, it’s you!

Sounds, and looks, like you had a nice vacation. I haven’t had a vacation in YEARS. But, if it’s true about gaining weight on vacations then maybe not having one isn’t as bad as I thought :0)

31 merri February 1, 2010 at 6:22 pm

How does soap help the geyser? What pretty photos! Why is that water so green? Hmm I was going to say that lemon merigne pie looks tasty, but seeing as you guys barely ate it, it must not have been? I love lemony stuff. But it does tend to be icky at times in restaurants or premade.
