The Plan Of Distractions (Plus A Super Big Goal!)

by Mary on February 18, 2010

in Blogging,Books, Magazines, TV,Thoughts

I’m back in Memphis now!  Yay?

I slept 11 hours, but I’m still tired and not completely with the timezone change yet.  Someone told me it would take two weeks to feel completely up to it.  Oh great!

It is hard to decide how I feel about being back here.  I like my family, I like my friends, I even like Memphis.  But I miss Kepa and his family and New Zealand.  I wonder if I will always feel like I want to be in multiple places at once.  I don’t understand why everyone can’t just live in the same place.

Anyway, I’m trying to distract myself from thinking about my current location and situation.  So on to the distractions (to keep me from thinking about missing Kepa) that are really just some BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS in disguise!

BOOK READING

I started reading The Adventures of DietGirl book by Shauna while in New Zealand and now will finish it up, including going back and rereading parts that I bookmarked because they were so amazing and reminded me of my life or assured me that my direction is a good one.  I was surprised by how much we have in common on our journeys.  I’ve read her blog for a while, but had no clue.  I freaking love her book.  I will probably write a more indepth review of it soon, but I just want to say that it is the reason I will never write a book.  Because my book would be very, very similar.  All of the best things I would say have already been written and published (ok, not all).  But on this subject?  DietGirl rocks.

Next I’m going to work my way through the huge list of books I want to read but still haven’t.  I love reading, so this should be fun!

BOOK WRITING

I just said I would never write a book, but in a way, I’m currently writing a book.  It’s not a book that will be published and it’s probably not on the subject you are thinking.  It’s about health blogging.  Yep.  And it’s going to be an ebook.  Basically I know a lot about blogging and making money with blogging.  So I figured I would share all this information and if you want it you can learn all the same stuff it took me over two years to learn.  I wished I had something that sped up the learning process when I started, so I’m making that now.  Basically I figured after showing a few people how to start a wordpress blog I might as well expand and explain how to do everything – from SEO (which gets your blog more visitors) to making money (you could make some grocery money or even thousands a month).  It’s a good distraction, plus I like writing, I like blogging, and I like sharing my knowledge.  So look for this to come out within the next month.

COOKING

Now that I’m home with plenty of free time on my hands, I’ve decided to start learning/practicing cooking again.  I figure it will be a good thing for me to learn how to cook a few things so I’m not always relying on Kepa to cook for me.   So basically I am now searching for recipes to try out.  I want to have a nice stack of tasty things I can make that will keep us both healthy.  I’m looking mostly for dinner recipes – things that are delicious and around 400 – 500 calories.  If you have any great ones, please send them my way!!

THE BIG GOAL

I’ve also set myself a weight loss goal, as a distraction and as something to work towards.  Today I’m joining a gym and as I just mentioned, I’m going to be cooking a lot and trying to eat really healthy.  Here is something I wrote the other day and wasn’t sure if I wanted to post, but decided to anyway.

The day Kepa hit his goal I decided to lose 100 pounds.

I realized that setting a goal and working toward it wasn’t a bad thing.  It was AMAZING.  It was an awesome thing to watch someone work hard to accomplish something.  And I wanted to do the same.  So I decided to stop selling myself short and go for it.

Up until that point I didn’t set many goals.  My only real goal was to get under 200 pounds, because then I thought I could get health insurance.  That was what had started this whole process and the magical number known as “onederland.”  I only had to hit 199 and my “goals” would be accomplished.

But that is selling myself short.  Telling myself I should stop there or maybe work to weigh 175 and stop there is selling myself way short.  If I want to lose 100 pounds and weigh 150 (still overweight for my height) then I should set that as my goal.  I shouldn’t settle for doing anything less, being anything less.  I should work toward that instead of telling myself I would fail before I even try.

That’s what I’ve been doing up until now.  Telling myself I will fail.  Even while psyching myself up to succeed at losing weight I’ve been telling myself I will fail at losing a lot.  I say things like I would never want to way under 175 because that would be to small for me.  I tell myself I would not want to work hard to lose weight that doesn’t matter because who cares under 200 lbs.   I’ve been telling myself I can lose weight but I can’t lose THAT much weight.  Other people can do it, but I can’t.  I’ve been telling myself I can’t do it.

But I’m done with that shit.

Because I can do this.

I can lose 100 lbs.

I can lose 100 lbs and keep it off.

That’s been my mantra for the last few days.  I’ve finally convinced myself that I can and will do this.  It will be a nice distraction to work towards during the next few months while I’m over here in the US.

And those are a few of my distractions and plans for the next few months while I’m home, besides working some jobbity jobs.  Looks like I will have enough to keep me busy.  I’m excited?!?!

That’s awesome! You can totally lose 100 pounds! Right now I’m at 248 trying to work my way down to 175, but I started at 275 so we’re totally in the same boat. You’re ebook sounds excellent too, I just recently started my own health blog at http://lesslauren.com and I’d love to read some of your success tips.

3 Steve February 18, 2010 at 12:07 pm

11 Lynn February 18, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Dang girl, I could have written that last bit.

I’ve been the same way – Oh, once I get under 200 all my worries are over…but I originally set the 100lb goal because while it seemed like a huge undertaking it still seemed realistic. That would bring me to 175, which at my current weight seems like a terrific number BUT it still may not be the *best* weight for me. That is something I’ll have to figure out once I get there. For now the focus is on the first goal – the 100lbs.
We can do this! :)

I hope the transition goes smoothly for you & that the time difference eases quickly!

Have a great week!
Lynn

Now I just want to buy that book from Amazon…along with all the other recommended titles. Amazon is addicting. The ebook sounds great – I would also love to make money blogging. I love my career, but I have more of a passion for blogging about weight loss/getting healthy. I’m trying to cook more often too. I decided to try to cook one meal a week.

16 Harshathlete February 18, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Hey Mary,
You can definitely lose 100 pounds if your put your mind to it. However, a big goal can sometimes be overwhelming and too daunting. So piecemeal it. As they say “How do you eat an elephant ? …One bite at a time”. If you focus on losing the next 10 pounds, you wont get as overwhelmed. An even smaller goal would be a weekly goal of 2-3 pounds.
As I have found, its a good idea to take a break ( for a couple of days) when reach a mini-goal ( of say 10 lbs ) so you can rest, regroup and renew your intensity for the next mini-goal. As Stephen Covey says “Take the time to sharpen the saw”.

Hope that helps.

p.s : Good luck on the eBook, I am in the process of doing something similar, and reading your post was just the kick in the pants I needed to stop slacking off.

Hey mary!
You can absolutely lose 100lbs. I think 150lbs is a wonderful, achievable goal and you can do it. Not without some freaking hard work though!
:) I’m glad you gave yourself a bit of a kick in the pants!
I am super-interested in your e-book! It’ll be awesome to read it and find some tips on improving my own newbie blog.

19 Stephoodle February 18, 2010 at 1:52 pm

Good for you! Go for that goal!

I had the exact same thoughts when I started losing again. All of my goals in previous attempts have been just to get under 200 pounds. I didn’t succeed any of those times. I think my goal wasn’t big enough. So I’m in the same boat as you, except I’m shooting for losing 119, to hit near or just at the top of the healthy weight range for my height.

As for long distance relationships, they’re hard, especially when you both live on different continents. Visits back and forth are all too fleeting, not to mention expensive… but totally worth it with the right person. Which is why I ended up getting married and moving from sunny San Diego to a little village in England. :)

It’s a hard choice to make, but it can be one of the most awesome ones too. *hugs!*

20 Mary February 18, 2010 at 8:40 pm

I can’t even imagine being in the normal weight for my height. Even 150 sounds crazy to me, but I can definitely do it.

It sucks being on different continents. And you are right about the flights. And you are even more right about it being worth it for the right one. … Hehe, england sounds nice!

Thank you for the comment!

21 Tina February 18, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Hellz yeahz!!!! That’s the commitment and dedication I love to see in my blogger buds! I am so excited for you–for this 100lb challenge, for this relationship with Kepa, for the changes happening in your life right now and for the eBook (can’t wait to read it!).

You know I’ll support you in any way you need me to.

You’re already well on your way with the weight goal, so that’s awesome! And like you said, when you put something out there, you do it. I just hope I can be with you when you reach yours like you were here for me.

Does the boyfriend of a writer get a free copy of the book? Is that how that works? ;)

And I look forward to tasting more of your cooking! More salads, too!

29 Mary February 18, 2010 at 8:46 pm

Wrong? Not wrong at all. I’m glad you get to know stuff before everyone else!

You are going to be so helpful in this. Your support is the best!

I have no idea when it’s going to happen, but I’ll make sure we are together. Then we can party!

Boyfriend does get a free copy, because boyfriend is going to be copy editor! How exciting! Yay proofreading!!

Mmm, salads!

This is SO similar to my ‘goal’ setting. I feel like I would give myself cop-out goals, because I didn’t want to say the real goal out loud..like it wouldn’t happen or something? I’ve always been told (by work out/diet friends/parents)..get under 200 and then you can do it. Who decided that number was okay?

Good luck with everything, can’t wait to read :)
