Why Being Boring Is A Good Thing

by Mary on March 29, 2010

in Thoughts

A while ago on some post where I wrote about something exciting, someone left me a funny comment. Since I can’t remember what post I can’t find the comment but it was something about how my life was never boring. I found it funny because my life is usually quite boring.

Sure, when I do something I do it big. I’m moving across the world in a few months. I’m trying to lose 100 pounds. I’m trying to change my life in big ways. I have been changing my life in big ways. But for the most part the day to day stuff is incredibly boring.

Take today for instance. I woke up and ate a yummy breakfast thanks to my mom cooking me a pancake. Shower, get ready, all to work at home. I spent an hour fighting with the terrible internet and ended up not being able to fix it. I spent a couple hours writing and editing (I’m trying to be a real writer who gets paid and everything! Hire me!). Then I spent some time cleaning and organizing since I couldn’t get online. Really, really exciting, right?

Now I’m about to make lunch and then head to the public library so I can post about how boring my life is. Go ahead and laugh now, because it’s funny. It really is.

Most days are like this. I either work from my house or from the library. Sometimes I will take a walk at the park or take my scooter for a spin. I cook dinner for my mom and myself. I exercise at night, because that’s my favorite time to do it. For the most part I just work every day on making my goals become reality. I don’t do anything super exciting. Considering how boring I am I wonder why anyone reads my blog. You must all just be waiting around for something big to happen. ;)

The thing is, the day to day stuff is almost boring when you are working toward something big. There is a lot of boring, repetitive work that seems to get you nowhere but is just what you have to do to build a foundation and inch yourself closer to your goals.

When you are working toward losing weight you will have to do the eat right/exercise stuff every day. Sometimes it gets boring. It gets tedious. It gets hard to see the big picture when you have a big goal but only lose a little per week. It can be frustrating and it can make you want to quit if you don’t like when things get “boring.” I’m not a huge fan of it but I’ve accepted that sometimes my days and actions will feel boring. I try my best to make things exciting by cooking new foods and trying new workouts. I might not be able to do something hugely exciting every day but I can do something new each day.

I know that the boring day and actions are helping me get where I want to be. I know that sometimes you have to sacrifice the instant satisfaction for something better in the end.

What about you? Are you boring like me?

Um…most of my excitement nowadays come from a cat. So yeah, I’m pretty boring.

But I have a routine, and I like it, and I get really anxious when its thrown off for whatever reason, so I’ll take boring. :)

2 Mary March 29, 2010 at 3:55 pm

Mine too!! You say Jerry on the video! He is like the most exciting part of my day. :)

3 Anonymous Fat Girl March 29, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Ha ha!!! My weekly excitement revolves around my obsession with reality tv… Particularly, Survivor. I don’t have a lot of excitement in my life, but I’m happy so it works. LOL

Happy is good. :)

I love reality tv. I love BAD reality tv. Like I watch stuff that is so embarassing I can’t even bring myself to tell you about it. Haha.

5 Lauren March 29, 2010 at 12:54 pm

I’m boring but in different ways. I catch crap from my friends for making boring/plain food choices. They don’t understand how I can stand to eat a plain salad that isn’t drowning in dressing, or how I hate putting ketchup or mayo on things. I’m naturally quite a homebody so my life is almost never exciting. It amazes me that I ever come up with interesting topics to blog about.

I’m with ya on the salad without dressing but you lost me on ketchup. I love ketchup. I’ll drown my food in ketchup or hot sauce or both if I let myself. Mmmm.

7 Rachel March 29, 2010 at 12:55 pm

I’m pretty boring, too. I sit at a desk forty hours a week. I workout directly after work. I take the train home. And I work some more. Or on the rare occasion, watch a show or two. The weekends are a little more forgiving, but normally just Friday evening and Saturday. Sundays are pretty much a routine, too. Damn ,you Mary! I didn’t realize how boring my life was until now! ;)

Haha. I’ve probably made everyone think about how boring they are, which could be good or bad. ;) But we are young and work is important now and it’s okay to do that. I think. :)

9 Jack Sh*t March 29, 2010 at 12:58 pm

That’s exactly the reason I post so much nonsense; if I wrote about what I ate each day, what specific exercises I do each day, each good decision I make during the course of a day, it would make for some pretty…. actually, it would be pretty damned exciting! You’ve given me an idea for a whole new blog!

10 Mary March 29, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Haha. Please don’t create that blog! Seriously, I think that’s why everyone loves you and your blog so much. It’s not the tedious step by step account of this journey we are all on. It’s nice to take out a few minutes and read something funny instead.

11 Tina March 29, 2010 at 1:00 pm

When it comes down to it, we’re all pretty boring. Weekdays it’s work, eat, exercise, pay attention to my doggies, computer/TV then do it all again. When I get to do something like going to Bingo (okay, I’m not a Granny but I love Bingo) with a friend or some function, it feels like I’m all that! What a life! LOL

12 Mary March 29, 2010 at 4:00 pm

I think you are right. What’s that saying… humans are creatures of habit? We find the things we like and then we do them over and over again unless they are hurting us and we decide to change. We all get a little comfortable in what we do and what we are comfortable doing.

Oh, I like Bingo! I went for the first time while I was in Vermont. I’m definitely no granny but I think it’s fun!

13 amanda March 29, 2010 at 1:00 pm

you have no idea how boring I am! “old lady” is normally the adjective I use to describe myself to new people. pretty sad, but I love my quiet routine.
.-= amanda´s last blog ..A whiny post. =-.

14 Mary March 29, 2010 at 4:01 pm

There is nothing wrong with a quiet routine if you love it. :)

15 Tracey March 29, 2010 at 1:33 pm

I completely agree with you. I am very boring. People always think I have so much going on because of the big things such as going back to school, training for a marathon, or going on trips but the truth is that my everyday life is boring. I wake up, go to work from 7-5 and then come home to workout and do school work. I don’t do anything extremely exciting but sometimes it is the boring everyday things that help us get to the big exciting things.

I couldn’t do the marathon if I didn’t do my daily workouts and I couldn’t go on these trips if I didn’t work everyday in order to save money. The boring definitely builds up to the exciting!

16 Mary March 29, 2010 at 8:23 pm

That’s totally it – the boring things help us get to the exciting things. :) And then when we do that everyone thinks we are exciting! It’s funny! :)

Yeah, people ask how I travel so much. It’s because I work all the time and don’t spend a lot of money. That adds up to travel and awesomeness eventually!

17 Erin March 29, 2010 at 2:03 pm

I’m totally boring. Life consists of work, gym, time with kiddo. Rinse, lather and repeat. Once in awhile, I get out for a night on the town, or a mini-vacation, but I usually do not deviate from the norm. Ahh…life!

Hey, you’re right! But maybe the boring times make the special, exiciting times extra good! Mixing up your routine by trying new foods or a new type of exercise is a great way to stay empowered. Keep up the good work!

22 Lanine Bradley March 29, 2010 at 2:55 pm

23 Mary March 29, 2010 at 8:28 pm

Good point. Generally I only blog about the exciting/fun stuff, so I can see how that would make people think that. Also, I think it’s the same as how the place we live isn’t that exciting to us but to tourists its AMAZING and exciting. Just because it’s DIFFERENT. I think with blogs, the ability to look into the life of someone different makes it exciting.

24 Tatulah March 29, 2010 at 3:04 pm

26 merri March 29, 2010 at 3:22 pm

Hmm well no matter what you say, I don’t find your life boring. If it was really that boring would everyone be reading your blog? On the other hand, I find MY life boring and people a lot of times say my life isnt boring and theirs is. (I still think theyre wrong). Sometimes I feel like I’m dying of boredom, but it’s sort of silly, because I do fun things most days, so its just if I miss a day or two of doing anything fun, I feel like I live the most boring existance on earth and I’m gonna die of boredom lol. I definitely need to work on that. Still, the fact remains that you just went to a conference, had kidney stones, got stranded in an airport, and are saving up to move to another country to be with your boyfriend, who you met through blogging. Lol c’mon, you cant make this stuff up! Today I can say though that maybe I should have been a little MORE boring last nite, cuz im dead today lol.

And yeah, you really can’t make up my story. It’s so crazy and not at all anything I expected planned for. I’m as much on the ride as all of you who read it.

28 Jody - Fit at 52 March 29, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Heck, I love boring a lot of the time! When I used to work 60++++ hours a week & still had to do everything else, boring was wanted big time. Now I relish it! :-)

I am with you on this!

Oh, when you work that much every week you definitely learn to appreciate quiet/boring. At least most people do.

30 Jess March 29, 2010 at 4:08 pm

I tend to think of it as an exciting boring. Because although the day to day is boring, the hypothetical end result is exciting. And, I’ve been setting little goals so when I meet them, it’s also exciting. I throw in the cooking to make things more entertaining, and it has been, and reading these motivational blogs helps me look at weight loss and life in a different light. So maybe it might be boring to other people, but it sure as hell is pretty interesting to me.

And, your life is pretty damn interesting. You got kidney stones after you ran a mile at Fitbloggin’. I mean, that’s pretty crazy. And you’re writing your huge e-book, planning to move to NZ, and you’ve got a road trip across the USA in a few months. Boring?! Not in the least!
.-= Jess´s last blog ..Weigh-in #8 =-.

31 Mary March 29, 2010 at 8:41 pm

Hahah. That’s the best explanation ever: exciting boring. I love how you set the mini goals and celebrate them. I set the goals but need to do better about the rewards/celebrating.

Ah, yes, when you put all of those things together in one paragraph life does seem pretty exciting! :)

32 Amy : Fast Food Obesity March 29, 2010 at 4:20 pm

I’m boring too! I wake up, go to work, come home, exercise, cook, then throw a toy approximately 5,481 times for Sookie. And think about doing some writing on my stories I’m working on, but usually watch something on TV since my DVR is always full b/c all I do in my spare time is read and watch TV and play online.
Yeah, youv’e seen my twitter right? *I’M* boring!! :)

35 Dr. Kal March 29, 2010 at 6:59 pm

I’m really boring, but boring can be a good thing. With weight loss, boring can be great thing. When your actions becomes boring and methodical, they become habits. The best way to lose weight is eliminating old bad habits and forming new good habits. So aim for boring!

37 Anele March 29, 2010 at 7:30 pm

I’m “boring” like you and am happy to have found another evening exerciser. I don’t know about you but I feel like I’m walking through sludge if I try to exercise in the morning. Plus it drains away all the stresses of the day!

38 Mary March 29, 2010 at 8:54 pm

When I exercise in the morning I tend to overeat ALL day. If I do it at night I get rid of my stresses from the day and then only have one meal and snack (or not if I do it after). So it’s good for me to do at night for several reasons. Plus the gym is never crowded!

41 Tiff March 29, 2010 at 7:44 pm

Sometimes I feel like when life gets boring I subcounsciously throw a wrench in my weight loss- as if things not being a huge dramatic thing is bad!? Oh geez. I really liked this post actually- not boring at all :)

42 Mary March 29, 2010 at 9:00 pm

I think in the grand scheme of things I do that. Like last year when I got bored of my first big girl job I just quit to travel for a month with no idea what would come after that. Any time I feel like my life is getting boring I do something BIG. But for the weight loss stuff I LOVE boring. I shake it up a little bit to keep from getting too bored, but I still stick with the basics. :)

Is this boring or what? My laugh and the most excitement I’ve had in about a month came today from the water heater repairman saying the only way to see the pilot light on my water heater is tilting your head just so and sticking out your tongue this way. I said, “So that’s why I couldn’t see the pilot light when I was trying to relight it, I never stuck out my tongue.”
Actually it was $185 to fix the things that were wrong with it, but now we have hot water.

48 Mary March 30, 2010 at 7:57 am

Haha, at least repairman was funny! That sucks that it cost ya. But yay hot water!

Some things I caught in the comments…

Bad reality t.v.? Jersey Shore! I know this! ;P

Ketchup? Your bottle of ketchup is still untouched, waiting for when you come back :)

And boring? You’re anything but boring! You may do things you consider boring, but you, the person? Not boring in the slightest. You can entertain me for hours :)

54 Mary March 30, 2010 at 8:00 am

Hahah! Yeah. I like bad reality tv. Yesterday I watched a show called Jerseylicious. Seriously. I think I killed lots of brain cells. And I’m addicted to all things New Jersey.

Hurray ketchup! I love it!

Thanks. :) I’m the silly boring where you can laugh at me for long periods of time. :) It’s awesome.

I liked what Jenn said, “connoisseur of simplicity”. I find myself changing to different levels throughout the year. During the winter – I am sooo bored. If I am bored the other seasons — it’s usually because I’ve chosen to do nothing.

Sooooooooooo boring and soooooooo happy with that! We go out with some older gals I work with (like old enough to be our mothers) and we’re always the first couple to leave. More so. I wake up, I cuddle a puppy/kitten/husband (sometimes a combination), I get up, I take my puppy out, I ride the subway, I work in a library (not actually, which would be interesting, just a really quiet, really serious, really conservative office), I ride the subway, I take my puppy out, I sit on the couch with my husband I go to bed. Lately, I haven’t been exercising at all. My big excitment is going to the movies. I’m 25 and my life has pretty much reached it’s peak. It’s not just boring, it’s downright depressing.

I can’t even eloquently blog about my boring day….lol.

62 barry March 31, 2010 at 6:44 am

I think we’re all boring. If other people had to walk a day in our lives they’d be quickly bored. But to us its not boring.

I bet if we’d even had to spend time with most of the big celebrities we’d bored to tears with their routines.

When it comes to getting to our goals the more we stick to a routine even a boring one the closer we get to our result.
