Get Me Back In The Gym, Please?

by Mary on March 30, 2010

in Fitness

Ok so I know that technically today the ebook was supposed to be done and out there today.  I also know that I’m even annoying myself with pushing it back again. Sorry for those of you who are waiting on it’s awesomeness to launch on the world. But sometimes life is unexpected and with the craziness of last week it just wasn’t going to happen. I’ve been working really hard and it’s almost done… so there won’t be any more delays.. I promise it’s coming next week!!

It turns out quite a few of us are in love with our simple routines. I LOVED the comments on my post about being boring. You guys are so clever and totally right about how good these things are.

And when I think about my own life, such big things are coming after all these simple days! Kepa just got his passport and he is coming to America in a couple months. I wish he was coming now, but I’m learning to wait for good things. At least I’m trying to learn this! But really I just get so excited about that happening. I can’t believe we are going to drive across the country! And moving to another country? That’s so freaking exciting that I can’t even let myself think about it.

For now all I can think about and focus on is the every day stuff. Like eating healthy. And trying to get myself back in the gym. I got derailed last week, yeah, but I need to get back to my routine. So far that hasn’t happened. I’ve been walking a mile a day since Saturday but that’s it. That’s hardly enough exercise to get me to where I want to be. In my head I know that but it is NOT translating into actual action.

Anyone want to volunteer to drag me to the gym?  (Candace?)  Skype a workout with me? Something?

I’m not sure what it is. I suppose I got comfortable doing nothing too strenuous for a week. Given the chance I think I will always naturally choose to be lazy. I LOVE exercise and I love the effects of it, but given the chance I will skip it. Once I’m there I will work hard and do my thing, but it’s hard to get myself there. I’m full of excuses and reasons not to go. Like, even though I want to start running so I can reach my next goal of running a 5k I talk myself out of it because last time it was followed by pain. Slightly irrational, yes, but it’s what I’m doing nonetheless. Call me silly.

My body is actually screaming out for some exercise. I know this feeling. It wants to move. I’m at the point where I need to do something and give myself a thorough workout to feel good. So help me out people. Someone convince me to just do it. I’m all motivational sometimes and like to give other people kicks in the butt, but right now I need one. I don’t need to let more days pass. I don’t want days to turn into weeks to turn into months without really doing much.

Maybe I just need to do this for myself. Maybe I’m just asking you for some encouragement. I’m sorry to be so selfish. But only a few people in my reality cheer me on. For the most part I’m surrounded by people (ok, just one, but I’m around him all the time) making jokes about my weight and efforts. It feels like it would be all too easy for me to slip into the same place I was last year where I was gaining weight every week and feeling more hopeless by the minute. So I need some digital encouragement to make me feel like it’s worth it to get back in the gym.

…..

Update: And here’s an idea. A workout pledge. I’ve thought they are silly before when other bloggers did them, but maybe a short one time challenge will be helpful for a jump start. I mean, I originally got started losing weight last year because of a challenge. So here’s how it works: leave me a comment with encouragement or tips or thoughts or anything and for every comment I’ll spend 30 seconds on the treadmill.  This workout will happen tomorrow afternoon at 3 or 4 when I have a good chunk of free time to spend on the treadmill, so the ability to comment here will end in exactly one day at 2:30 pm. Tonight I will just go walk again with my mom and contemplate going to the gym for one more day. ;)

Update 2: Even more, Steve from 265 and Falling is going to match the time I spend on the treadmill. So whatever you guys end up making me do, he will do it too! Hurray exercise for everyone?

Update 3: My awesome friend Jen from Jen in Real Life is going to do it to! We are going to have some rocking workouts tomorrow!

Update 4: Anyone else who wants to do the challenge with us tomorrow should join us! I’ll let you know the time count tomorrow at 3 pm! :)

I guess I may be your first 30 seconds on the treadmill. :) I have been reading your blog for a long time and have been so inspired by you and by other fitness bloggers, I start my own blog and hope to inspire others someday. Way to go with your treadmill challenge! :)

I’ve gotta add to the time too, just to laugh at you.

I’ll try not to reply to every comment like I normally do. I’ll practice restraint. ….

I love the idea of a workout pledge! I may join in with ya. Just think of how great it feels when the workout is finished – no better sense of accomplishment. :)

9 Chrissie March 30, 2010 at 1:38 pm

I think your challenge is an excellent idea – good for you! I hope this 30 secs helps you get started!

10 Auntie Em March 30, 2010 at 1:38 pm

I am silly and incorrectly typed my blog URL (should be Wordpress instead of Blogger). You can just count both comments as one 30-second time increment!

Here’s you 30 seconds of encouragement from me :)

On a sidenote, if you want, I’ll do a “3 mile pledge” with you on Thursday. (Or today, depending on how your schedule is.) I just can’t on Wed or Fri cause it’s the dreaded C25K days. Let me know if you’re in and we can tweet each other a “time” to do them and get the mileage in! :)

34 sara March 30, 2010 at 2:57 pm

+ 30 seconds :)

You can do it. I went to see the personal trainer on Monday after 4 weeks of not doing much at the gym (oppps). I hadn’t lost any weight by my body fat mass (whatever that is) has gone down slightly which i am pleased with.

I’m off to the gym tomorrow so i will try and do the same as you guys

35 Christopher March 30, 2010 at 3:00 pm

39 Tina March 30, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Imma gonna match you! My time will be done either tomorrow evening or Friday.

As for working out and getting in the habit, know that it takes time. You have to find things you like/love, continue to mix it up and be consistent. Fake it til ya make it! When I first started, I spent more time convincing myself to go to the gym than IN the gym. Now: I love it. I definitely skip a planned gym day every now and then but I never miss more than two days in a row–in fact, normally, I go five times a week.

With running and starting the C25k program, I learned that I needed to research and learn proper running form because I was ending up with achilles tendinitis and sore knees. Do your research!

I totally see you being a regular exerciser–especially after your super active trip to New Zealand!
.-= Tina´s last blog ..Day One Review =-.

40 Mary March 30, 2010 at 4:07 pm

I am a regular exerciser, I just get derailed easily by big events (like hospital trips and such). Once I get started again I’ll be fine, and go 5-7 times a week, but it’s just getting started again after something that I have trouble with.

41 jen (@jeninRL) March 30, 2010 at 5:48 pm

43 Sea__Breeze March 30, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Do it! You’ll feel better after you start! I try to work out 5-6 days a week

44 merri March 30, 2010 at 4:15 pm

I am naturally lazy too. Oddly enough, that doesn’t always translate to exercising though. I did skip yesterday but that was only because I had a sorta crazy nite at the club the nite before and my body literally couldn’t handle it. But I am so lazy that its actually easier to just go work out after work because it’s what I do. My legs are programmed to walk towards the gym. Lol. On weekends, its another matter, and I never go workout.
I’m sorry you don’t have much real life support. I guess I am lucky, because I live in the city where I live, a lot of people work out. I live with a best friend/roomie who works out way more than I do, and I see his results, which motivate me (he got me started working out, yrs ago). Others of my friends work out, and even coworkers. Even when they don’t work out, they see me leave work with my gym bag each day and say, going to the gym? Have fun. It’s expected of me, and even more, I expect it from myself. If I still lived in NH, I probably would not work out because its pulling teeth to get my family there to even take a walk. Once you move over with Kepa, at least you’ll have someone more on the same page with your lifestyle to encourage you.
I hate the treadmill so I wont join your challenge. But I promise tomorrow Wednesday while you’re treadmilling, I’ll take my hour kickboxing class and probably my hour yoga class after that too (I was lazy last week and skipped yoga!). :)

Yeah living in NZ will be helpful. Kepa runs and I walk/run and all is super awesome. :)

Enjoy your kickboxing! I’d so rather be doing that but there isn’t a close kickboxing class that I know of. :(

46 kwithme March 30, 2010 at 4:17 pm

I’ll help you out. I have never commented before. I think challenges are great. I do them often as I work well with a goal or challenge. Sometimes even the smallest challenge is good. Before Xmas, I promised myself I would do 15 seconds of plank and 5 flights of stairs. I would do this at least 5x a week for 1 month. Each week I would increase 15 seconds and 1 flight of stairs. At the end of the month, I was doing 60 second planks and 10 flights of steps in less than 5 mins. It was great at increasing my strength and stamina.

I’ll chime in and add 30 seconds! Maybe it will motivate me to get back on the wagon myself. My excuse has been that I’ve had the flu/cold/something, but it’s dragged on for like a month now! 55 Michelle Hastie March 30, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Always think of the end result before you exercise. Remember how much your body absolutely loves to move and thanks you when you move. Remember that when you workout you are proving to yourself that you deserve self care and self love. Remember that your body speaks to you all the time and wants to be listened to, when you feel like you want to work out and “get lazy” you are not honoring your body wisdom and your body is way too amazing to do that too. Then remember that if you don’t feel like working out, that is your bodies way of saying it needs a break, so honor it. Never force anything. Just do what feels right and ask no questions. And those times that your mind tries to play tricks on you by telling you that “You are lazy” remember that you love to exercise and that is simply your fears speaking to keep you exactly where you are, and you are smarter than that. By the way, walking a mile is exercise, never let your mind tell you otherwise. Sometimes I just stretch for 15 minutes and call that my workout for the day. ;)

56 Meegan March 30, 2010 at 5:54 pm

I’m chiming in to add 30 seconds to you and your challenge buddies. WTG! Make sure you post your total time/end challenge results, then I will play along as well!

You can do it!!!! I’m battling through a slight slump myself, waiting for some aches and pains to subside, but today after I realized I couldn’t run like I had planned, I still managed to walk for the same amount of time. We just have to put one foot in front of the other and set our sights on the main goal. We will get there, eventually.

59 Anna @ Oats N Boats March 30, 2010 at 6:38 pm

You’re awesome. I just scrolled down past the comments and saw the ongoing dialogue – adding to your time – that rocks. You’re going to feel great and rock this challenge! You can do it! My only suggestion is that if you don’t like running, don’t run. I hate running. You can burn many calories walking uphill and/or walking with a weighted vest. Just a thought.

That’s over 36 minutes now. 38 if you count trackbacks.
.-= Dr. Kal´s last blog ..Childhood Obesity Articles =-.

80 Mary March 30, 2010 at 9:02 pm

I actually LOVE running, right up until the point where it gets hard and my body feels like it needs to quit. It’s so fun to run and feel free when it feels easy in the beginning. So I want to keep running … I think.

I hate walking uphill. It’s my least favorite thing ever. I’d rather struggle through anything else. It’s a good thing I live in a flat place currently.

And hear from us, you will! Welcome to the party!

89 Mary March 31, 2010 at 8:17 am

Steve is now the welcoming committee on my blog. I think he should keep the position. He’s good at it! :)

5 or 6 is cool. I’m central time so we will be doing it around the same time! :)

90 Jodi March 30, 2010 at 11:02 pm

I’m a bit late, but I think this is a great way to get you moving! I have your problem…an event can derail me, but I have no problem once I actually start. I will join you all and match what time you do!

91 100 Pounds in a Year March 30, 2010 at 11:31 pm

Awesome! I want to match your pledge too. Consider this an extra 30 seconds for both of us!

Beej sent me this way. Nice to meet ya.

Here’s your 30seconds and I guess mine too. Count me in. I’ll join in around 5 or 6 Alaska time.

93 Tony the Pink Panda March 31, 2010 at 12:31 am

95 Jess March 31, 2010 at 1:16 am

I’ll match your time on the treadmill. And hopefully hit the 5 mile run. Although, I warn you, the treadmill craps out at 60 minutes. Maybe your gym is cooler.

Now let’s do this! Ooo, I just gave myself 30 seconds too.
.-= Jess´s last blog ..Day 57: Wax on. Wax off. =-.

96 Mary March 31, 2010 at 11:48 am

I’m not sure but I think my gym stops at 60 minutes too…. which then you just have to start again! haha. Because this is definitely going to end up being over 60 minutes. OMG the cardio!!!

@ Lauren – Yes that’s what I will be doing! :)

97 Lauren March 31, 2010 at 11:47 am

Can’t you just start a new program on the treadmill once you hit 60 minutes?

So many new participants, too! If you listen closely you’ll be able to hear the hum of the treadmill all across the country. WooT!

Crap, another 30 seconds..oh wait, I mean Oh Shit (that’s for you, Jen!) :)

102 Sean (Learn Fitness) March 31, 2010 at 4:51 am

Sounds like a great idea, count me in as a matcher but I’ll likely need to do the elliptical. My body isn’t quite ready for running an hour.

HaHa! Your right it is hard to get motivation these days. I honestly always have to convince myself to get up off the couch and get moving. Sometimes a treadmill becomes a dreadmill, but once I do it I feel you’ll always feel so much better. You’ll know that the scale will only reflect hard work. So, this is an extra 30 secs on the treadmill for you, hope you enjoy ‘em ;p.

@Lauren – I don’t know. It’s going to be… fun?!? It is!!!

@Brandon – Thanks dude! It’s mostly Steve’s doing. All the updates came after chatting with him on Twitter. It’s totally a community thing. :)

2! 4! 6! 8! . . . You freakin’ rock ( it rhymes in my head ) I’m currently doing the running man for you, in honor of Da Treadmill. I know @nomorebacon is doing the same thing! We love you MARY!! (Disclaimer: We love Mary in an extremely honorable way. At no time was the word LOVE used in a way that may harm the giver or receiver. The LOVE given is not refundable but may be passed to other bloggers, as long as it’s understood, that DaManLovett, started it with his girl Mary!)

p.s. I was informed that it was 30 secs on the treadmill per minute. I believe that this post would be 57 minutes. I counted!

173 Kepa March 31, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Of course I’m doing this on the hope that there isn’t an influx in the next 5 minutes…

174 Kepa March 31, 2010 at 1:26 pm

I figure an hour and a half of running could be possible. I mean I was only saying that stuff because I’m going to be sore. Ultimately I want Mary to kick the crap out of this thing! :)
