Rambling On Food, Blogging, And Life

in Thoughts

Woah. Thanks for all the support on why I’m not running. Like I said, it’s hard for a couple  reasons: I actually like running, I’ve always wanted to be a runner, and it feels like everyone else does it.  But I’m understanding that I’m not on the same schedule as everyone else.

I’m losing weight slowly, my way, and it’s working.  I’m not trying to rush that. So why rush running? I get impatient often and want to do things quickly, to attack and complete new projects on short schedules, but I can’t do it with running. I need to listen and wait and eventually I know I will get to run my 5k. So thanks for all the support on that decision!

There are some other BIG desicions and fun projects I’m going to embark on soon, but I’m saving some announcements for next week. This week is already too full of big announcements. For now, I just want to ramble and link for your reading enjoyment.

Here beings the rambling…

FOOD

I officially discovered the best way to cook and eat squash ever, thanks to my mom. I thought I hated squash until I put some sugar on it! Not sure what that totally says about me other than I’m super sweet. Yes, that’s it. I’m super sweet.

FOOD REVOLUTION

I’ve been catching up on Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (here on Hulu) this week. It’s sad and astonishing and totally makes sense. Those kids that couldn’t identify vegetables? That was me. I wouldn’t eat veggies so I think at a certain point my mom just gave up trying. Since I read a lot as a kid I eventually learned all the veggies, but I didn’t try most of them until I was over 18 and I’m just now learning how to cook them. I totally support the food revolution thing. Kids just don’t stand a chance, someone needs to help them eat better when they don’t understand what better is.

EXPOSED

Mish is back with her blog Eating Journey (yay) which means the Exposed Movement lives onMy exposed post is one of the best things I’ve ever done with my weight loss blog. This journey hasn’t been all about losing weight, but about learning to love the awesome body I have. And now some of my favorite bloggers are doing the same and joining the exposed movement. It’s a wonderful thing.

BLOGGING

MizFit is talking about blogging malaise and how many of us out there have it. This is something I’ve struggled with from time to time, so I completely get it. I think we can all use our blogs to achieve what we want, but it’s hard, we struggle, and this shows it. A lot of bloggers lately are scaling back or taking time away and I think that’s good. Blogging rocks, I love it, it’s made my life better, but it can’t take over your life.

THE FUTURE

Sometimes I hate my current situation. I’m struggling a lot in more ways than just trying to be healthy. Actually the eating healthy and working out stuff is going so well. It’s almost easy. What’s not easy? Being away from my love, struggling to save up to move to be closer to him, struggling to not just whip out a credit card and jump on a plane. Long distance sucks, Im not going to lie. It’s completely worth the awesome future I see with Kepa, but right now it kinda sucks. I’m ready for July when he comes he and we roadtrip across the states (staying with random people to save money… woohoo couchsurfing adventure!) and for September when I get to move across the world to live in the same country. Right now I feel like I’m in purgatory, just waiting for my awesome future to start. Life is still awesome, just slightly more frustrating currently.

THE END

And that’s all the rambling I can muster for today. This weekend should be nice and relaxing with lots of walking outside. I love spring time!  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

That Jamie Oliver show freaks me out too. I can’t remember if I knew what a potato was when I was in first grade, but it still sucks. I felt worse when he did that demo for the kids and showed them how chicken nuggets are REALLY made. *sigh*

I think I might have known a potato. I always love potatoes. Yum.

Ah, that’s why I don’t eat chicken nuggets!

What is your planned route through the US? Or have you thought that far ahead? You guys should definitely go up highway 1 to Monterey since you will be in LA anyways, awesome, beautiful drive. If you make it as far north as Seattle I have guest room with Queen size bed :p You probably aren’t going that far north but the offer stands.
Food Revolution is scary, the sad thing is the finished shooting a while ago and they did a poll there recently and the kids want their pizza and fried food back :( I love Jamie, I loved Jamie when I worked with him on a benefit in the UK before he was super famous, he had just started shooting the naked chef. He is a genuine guy who really cares about food and nutrition.

Aw, thanks Alison. I don’t think we will be going that far North since we are headed across. Don’t know the exact route yet because I’ve been avoiding thinking too much about it in case it all falls through.

Sad. Of course, I would have voted to have my pizza back as a kid too. Sometimes it’s not about what kids want, but what’s good for them.

Not with veggies, but I saw a fruit at the store yesterday that I was unsure of. I asked the person working what it was…she didn’t know either. We bought it anyway. It’ll be a surprise.

I actually think it’s a mango of some kind (multiple types of mangos?). Not sure if I’ve ever had one – hence the lack of ability to name it.

Haha! That’s awesome! There are still some fruits and veggies I’m not really familiar with, especially when I travel. There is a ton of fruit and such in other countries that I just look at it with no idea of what it is.

Hey, if you guys come through Memphis, you can sleep in my car.

Thanks Jack, but I think we’ve got Memphis covered. ;) But maybe a tweetup while we are here?

I am the same way with yoga that you are with running. I feel like I am supposed to want to do it and love it. Just doesn’t do it for me, and it took me a long time to realize that is okay!

I’m in upstate NY, if you ramble up through here.

Yoga is definitely not for everyone. And then for others, like me, it’s something I don’t like doing on my own. I like when I have a friend or a class. Doing it to relax? Bah.

It’s okay to not like everything!

13 TB-Milwaukee April 9, 2010 at 3:11 pm

I haven’t caught the Jamie Oliver show. Always forget about it till it’s too late. I do think school lunches have gotten lots healthier than when I was scarfing down pizza and fries on a daily basis.

I forget about it too that’s why I watch it online. :) I barely watch anything right when it come on tv.

15 merri April 9, 2010 at 6:01 pm

Ooh I want to watch that show. There are so many shows to watch though, that I havent gotten to it. That’s why I love not having cable and watching tv online instead!!! My father is SUPER PICKY especially about veggies (we had to serve him plain corn for easter last wkend) and so my mother would only mostly serve us corn or beans, every night. It’s a miracle that when I got older I discovered the billion other veggies that exist (and which my mother actually likes, but never gets to eat – poor her). When my cousin was little we fed her broccoli and called it “trees” because everyone knows that broccoli is yucky but trees are cool. She had no idea what she was eating and loved it!
Yah, ive had a hard time thinking of things to blog lately. And I have a couple of things I do want to blog, but no time to do it. If only work didn’t get in the way. Or writers block. Or life. Lol.
I cant imagine how hard it would be to do that whole long distance thing youre doing. Well, at least july isnt TOO TOO far away…
.-= merri´s last blog ..HAUTE’s opening nite was umm, well, hot!! lol =-.

16 Mary April 10, 2010 at 9:16 am

You should watch it. I think it’s pretty interesting.

Ah, yes, but July is far enough away to suck!

17 Michelle@eatingjourney April 9, 2010 at 6:20 pm

Thanks for the shout out and I am so glad that you think of it as something that you are proud of. I mean why wouldn’t you, but it’s nice to know that.

I totally get the stress of overseas and having no money. It sucks. The other day I was REALLY missing home and had to not think about it, cause it just spun my head out. Keep your eye on the prize and try to live the days up until then as full as you can.

:)

So much in one post! Course I hear you on Jamie Oliver as I have been writing about that a lot. Such an important quest he is on!

On the blog writing & people scaling back/rethinking, I so get that. I love it & love sharing BUT I have been trying to figure out how to do it & life & other things too. I will probably hope to do more tag teaming with other bloggers & share then on my blog & not sure what else. It is a hard decision on what to do….

Can’t wait to hear your news!!!! Got me on pins & needles!

Yeah, blogging is hard since it’s so time consuming and the payoff isn’t that great usually. Hard, hard.

Hey Mary, I stayed up wayyyyyyy too late last night reading your e-book. It is mindblowingly helpful! There’s so much I don’t know. I am trying to get myself to take little baby steps with it because it would be so easy to just get overwhelmed. I’m so very impressed with all that you know and all you’ve done to make your blog so awesome, and I appreciate your putting it down for people who don’t know a SEO from a SUV!
