I’m back from my adventures to Astoria for the Goonies 25th Anniversary weekend. It didn’t go anything like we had planned, but it was still fun and I’ve got pictures to share.
We visited the Tillamook Cheese Factory on our drive up to Astoria and stopped off for some cheese and ice cream. They make delicious cheeses, if you didn’t know.
Then we ended up getting a flat tire while driving. We had to pull off the road and happened to be right at this lovely beach so it was a nice event. But the flat tire ended up costing time and money that threw off the rest of the plans for the weekend.
When we got to Astoria we were later than we had planned and didn’t have as much money, so we decided not to go to any of the planned events for the weekend. Instead we decided to go to the movie showing of The Goonies that evening. We started walking down the river path looking for the theater.
After a mile of walking I decided to get my phone out and check to see what was going on because it appeared that we were leaving the downtown area. Sure enough, we were going the wrong direction! We ended up walking over two miles (out and back) before finding the theater. It was good to get a nice little bit of exercise in, but now I know to double check other people’s directions instead of blindly following. ;)
The movie showing was extremely fun and I’m glad we at least did that. It was good to job my memory about the movie for all the places we would see.
The next day we went to Long Beach, Washington, home to The World’s Longest Beach… or so the sign said.
It was extremely windy on the beach so it was perfect for kite flying. These two guys were pro kite flyers and watching them was something I’d never seen before. I had no idea you could do so many tricks with kites!
Long Beach is also home to the half alligator, half human named Jake, but my picture of him didn’t turn out very well. This mural celebrating him is much prettier though. ;)
After visiting Long Beach we went to Cape Disappointment to see the North Head Lighthouse. I love lighthouses!
After visiting the lighthouse we went back to Astoria and saw The Goonies house.
We also went to the Astoria column and climbed the 164 steps to the top. Hurray for more exercise! It would have been more pleasant if I hadn’t gotten dizzy going up the circular staircase. But the views were worth it.
Astoria has crazy rainy weather, but when it’s sunny it’s unbelievable.
That’s my weekend in a nutshell. I had a great time even though we didn’t do any of the stuff we planned. I was bummed by not getting to walk the 5k Truffle Shuffle (honestly, how fun would THAT have been?!?) but sometimes things just don’t work out. I still got to see a lot of amazing things, exercised naturally, and had fun. :)
