We are hanging out in a hotel in Tucumcari, NM right now and I finally have a few minutes to update you all on the road trip!
It’s been ridiculous, crazy, awesome, intense so far.

This is literally the first time I’ve had a few minutes that have been able to chill. I know that’s my own fault, but when you are doing a cross country roadtrip on both a monetary and time budget you have to cram things in. So that’s what we have been doing.
What all have we crammed in?
Well, after I picked up Kepa at LAX we headed to Venice Beach (I went there with Jess too!) to officially start our road trip on one side of the coast. We took photos to document the occasion.

It doesn’t look like Cali, does it? We got stuck in the cool, cloudy, feels-like-winter July weather.
After the official start of our roadtrip (which was celebrated with cupcakes for breakfast) we then drove through LA and stopped to explore a bit of Hollywood. We ate lunch at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles (yum) then headed out to Anaheim to meet up with some of Kepa’s internet buddies like Art! We had In N Out for dinner, to end a fun first day of roadtrip eating.
The next day we went to Disneyland!

It really is the happiest place on earth. And we picked the absolute BEST day to go. We only had like 8 hours but we managed to ride every major ride and do all the things we wanted. We walked on to most rides because it wasn’t crowded. It was perfect!
Then because we are crazy, we drove to Vegas that afternoon. So we started our Vegas time late, took a bus to a place that stopped serving food by the time we got there, walked back to another casino after already walking 10 miles or so that day, and ended up staying out way past what we wanted. But Vegas was pretty and shiny (and HOT):
And Kepa doubled his money playing Roulette. So that was fun!
Yesterday we left Vegas and drove. And drove. And drove. It was a long driving day for us. The longest, in fact. Kepa learned how to drive on the right side of the road and split the driving with me.

Still it was a lot of driving! But it was because I was with this guy:

Today’s plan is more driving, but less than yesterday. We will be in the Dallas area by this evening and then we are spending two nights there before heading off to New Orleans. I’m very excited about all that’s coming up! Quite a few of you said this was the trip/opportunity of a lifetime and I have to agree. It’s been and will be an amazing trip. I’m so glad we decided to do it because who knows when we will next even be in the States together? So we are enjoying this as much as possible, food included. ;)

You know I have a fabulous basement and enough room for 8 guests, and that’s without tapping into the travel trailer that sleeps another 6. You and your friend are most welcome to go back to the PNW via SLC and squat in my digs for a day or so. I’d be most happy to show you around.

One of the “regrets” I had of my x-country trip was not going to the Atlantic ocean to start it. my boyfriend at the time joined my in MA for the 4th of July and we were 20 miles from the ocean, and then we drove to upstate NY (in separate cars) where 2 days later we officially started our trip. We started it in Williamsburg, which I liked from a historical point of view, but we have pictures of us at the Pacific Ocean (Santa Monica to be exact) but not the Atlantic. Didn’t make it far enough south to get to the Gulf of Mexico.
Yeah, I am determined to make sure we get to the other ocean one way or another!
Love Roscoe’s Chicken n Waffles….I had it for the first time when I went to Long Beach/LA in April. Yumm….Hope you get some more chill time to post updates, I’m enjoying your pictures/stories! Now I want to go on a road trip.

I’m so happy for you guys! If you can do that much road trippin’ without getting on each others’ nerves too much, then I’d say you have a bright future together. :) It looks like you’re having a blast and soaking in as much of the U.S. as you can. Enjoy!!!

Oh…. big fun. If you need pointers on where to eat in N.O.—– let me know. I have spent half my eating life there.
My wife is from New Orleans so she knows a few things as well. Must eat at Mother’s.
Take care!

What a great start to your trip, you look so happy – and you and Kepa make a really attractive couple :) Love your dress, the others are right! How did Kepa find driving on the other side of the road? I learned to drive in Holland, which is on the same side as the States, but now I live in England, which is the other side…and I’m too scared to try it yet! I’m looking forward to seeing your next update, have fun :)

Hi Mary,
Love your blog. I’m an American living in Auckland, moved here at 24 for a kiwi and love it. I also am a hypnotherapist who specializes in weight loss. I too stuggled with my
weight for years. So if you would like to chat, send me an email. I’d be happy to help, having been there myself.
Oh and by the way, don’t believe everything people tell you about what kiwis think about Americans. Kiwi’s love Americans ( just not our government), I have found being a yank a huge advantage.
You’ll be exotic darling….

If you want to work out Wed. morning, let me know! It’s outside near downtown Dallas and at 5:30, done at 6:30. I’ll check this blog for a reply today and my email too. It’s dark and early, but an awesome workout with an awesome group of people.
You two look amazing, Tina and I set here and looked at all the pictures and she read the article, I mostly look at the pictures. Ha. I am so happy for the both of you, have the time of a life and then just have more, because your life is really just beginning. I look forward to you coming home. Love Mom
I like the cupcakes for breakfast bit. A fine start to any day.
It looks JUST like july to me! Except I didn’t know that la was like that just like SF was. As soon as you left SF, it got cold. Altho its pretty nice out today. Disneyland looks fun! Ive only been to disneyworld, once, in college. My friend was just in vegas the other week and it was 110 or so there he said it was really hot. Looks like you guys are having tons of fun! Ive never been to dallas, but ive been to san antonio and houston, and there were actual people with cowboy hats there! And of course new orleans is great. Thanks for the photos! U guys are cute! Its like taking a roadtrip with you, only with a comfier seat. Ps I like the dress too.

I love Tucumcari! Have stopped there many a time for lunch and once to spend the night during various cross-country drives. Haven’t been in years though – do they still wet the streets to keep the dust down?
I envy you your trip. Before I had my son, I used to drive across the country every couple of years. He’s eleven now and almost old enough to dig a roadtrip.
Have a blast!!!
