The Heat Is Not Fun

by Mary on July 26, 2010

in Fitness

It is hot. True story.

It’s been very hot and humid here in Tennessee, some days even bringing along heat advisories and warnings not to do much outside during the heat of the day. So I haven’t been doing much outside. I’ve been trying to stay inside as much as possible where there is at least some air conditioning.

I feel like because of this, I’ve become a terrible host for Kepa. Sure I showed him a lot on the road trip, but once we arrived home I feel like I lost the ability to do anything fun. I don’t want to go to the park, I don’t want to go on walks, I don’t want to do anything outside. We have been sticking to indoor activities that come with air conditioning. You know those elderly people that go to the mall each morning to walk laps? Yeah, we might become them quickly.

I’ve never liked the heat that comes with summers here. If it’s hot like this I get overheated very, very easily with activity. My body can’t handle it, my skin breaks out with a rash… it’s all quite miserable for me. It’s miserable just to do normal daily activities, so exercise becomes even more difficult.

I love gyms because even when it is hot outside you can workout in cool temperatures. I never have to worry about overheating and hurting myself because I got too hot. But unfortunately I’m once again in a situation where I can’t afford a gym (plus I only have a few weeks left here!).

My goal for this week is to get three workouts in. Exercise is most definitely out of the question. Working out at the gym is also out of the question. So what does that leave? At home workouts. My nemesis.

At least three times this week I need to exercise at home. I’ve not had a good track record with working out at home. I tend to hate it, feel silly, forget it, and just generally make a million excuses not to do it. I have weights, balls, DVDs, yoga stuff, and other exercise equipment here that I can easily use every day, yet I rarely use it. I almost always choose to spend time reading blogs or writing over working out at home. Almost always. But not this week, mostly because this week there is no other option for me. Workouts must be done and

On the bright side, I’ll get to review some of the many workout DVDs I have laying around the house. I’ll let you know how this week goes. Please feel free to follow me on Twitter and tweet-nag me about the workouts. ;)

What about you? Do you hate the heat? Do you switch to indoor workouts during the summer or can you tough it out and exercise outside?

I hate the heat. I could talk on and on about this. Mostly the reason being is that I sweat like a man. Honestly, if I am out in the heat (at a baseball game, shopping, etc) wearing shorts and a tank, sweat literally runs down my face and my hair ends up soaking wet. It looks like I showered. It even embarrasses my husband. I want to move to Alaska.

This comment made me laugh out loud for real. I sweat a lot too which just adds to the discomfort. Let’s all move to Alaska?

I like the heat but not when it’s time for me to work out. I have all but stopped running because it has been entirely too hot for me to walk let alone run.

Boston for the past 2 months has been sweltering. I don’t have central AC in my home so usually it’s just the main areas (living room/kitchen/dining room) that are cool. Since everyone is usually in these places it’s also no good for me to exercise at home. So my exercise motivation is shot unless I can somehow get to the gym.

This morning I woke up @ 530am to run and it was nice and cool but by the time I got back to my house 30 mins later I was sweating bullets the air changed that quick.

4 Kim July 26, 2010 at 10:04 am

I’m from Boston as well and went for a running thinking it was COOL out, but didn’t even think to factor in the humidity level. I was sweating like someone poured a bucket of water on me. Just took a shower and it feels like it didn’t take.

Don’t get me wrong! I like the heat provided I’m sitting by a pool with a cocktail.

5 Mary July 26, 2010 at 12:44 pm

I can’t even imagine being in the Northeast with high temps and no central AC. Death in certain rooms. I love me some AC.

And I agree, heat can be nice in certain situations (beach, pool, etc) but not workouts. Blah.

6 Marilou @ Mostly Healthy July 26, 2010 at 9:31 am

I used to not be a big fan of heat either … But I’ve discovered that the more weight I lost, the more comfortable I became towards heat. Especially the skin rash, completely disapeared with time.

Now, I don’t mind heat, especially since here, in Quebec, we have only 2 months of summer which goes by way too fast. Working in a too-much climatized office too makes me “crave” heat now hehe

7 Lynn C July 26, 2010 at 9:32 am

I don’t really mind the heat, but this weather has been a bit absurd, even for me. It’s 107 here?? and that’s the flat temperature, not the “heat index” stuff. Altho it did rain last night, so that might have helped a bit.

Ever since I dropped 80 pounds, I don’t really notice heat. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I understand that it’s hot, and I can tell that 107 is quite a bit warmer than normal, but it doesn’t seem to affect me like it does everyone else. Yes, I still sweat (but I always did… 80 pounds ago, I started sweating at 78 degrees… now I keep my AC set at 79 degrees and really, I don’t like being any colder than that.) but I don’t mind sweating, and it’s not stopping me from wanting to go for walks, or do exercise. (the bugs, on the other hand… UG!)

Just recently, I’ve found myself stashing a cardigan in my purse, because going to the movies, or to the mall is torture. I’m so cold I can’t enjoy anything I’m doing in there. So, I guess we all have our temperature problems… The first 10-15 minutes at the gym is pretty uncomfortable for me, until I get to sweating from exertion. Even so, as hot as it is, I’m wearing yoga pants to the gym to work out in because I don’t dare wear anything shorter, I’d be too cold inside.

8 Mary July 26, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Quite a few of y’all seem to have less of a problem with heat now that you’ve lost weight. I’ve lost some and I tend to get cooler quicker, so I bundle up in winter, but I’m still sweltering in the summer. Maybe once I lose more the summer heat won’t be so torturous?

9 Rob Dyess July 26, 2010 at 9:39 am

I am with you Mary… on the working out at home and on the heat thing.

If I don’t have somewhere to go… it wont happen.

As far as the heat goes…. I am all about running on the treadmill in the summer. I guess I have just gotten old and soft but I just CAN’T go out there…. I just HATE it.

Thanks!

I pretty much ALWAYS work out inside. I lived in the snow for so long that it’s too snowy and cold to work out outside during the winter and too hot in the summer to work out outside during the summer!

11 Karen@WaistingTime July 26, 2010 at 11:22 am

I hate it! I don’t walk outside in the heat but I have still been riding my bike, earlier, which at least generates a bit of a breeze.

I’m okay with like 80-85 degrees tops. But anything above that is pretty bad. I’m spoiled now because my house has central air (thank goodness!). Sometimes it gets so cold in the house I have to wear a sweater!

Yeah, it’s in the high 90s here with high humidity as well so the heat index is always over 100. It is above my 80s comfort zone. Hehe.

14 Andrea July 26, 2010 at 11:49 am

My schtick includes waking up early to run outside before it gets hot (ungodly early in the summer), going to the local rec center where it costs only a few dollars to workout, and classes are included with admission, and working out to FitTV in the living room. All a nice break.

I hate the heat, that’s why I live in Alaska :)

When I was in New Orleans for work in June, I just about thought I was going to die from the heat. I had to get up and run at 6am just to make it barely tolerable, even though it was already in the mid 70′s at that hour.

So, when can I come visit? Or at least become your neighbor? I’m serious.

I almost died in New Orleans. It’s slightly better here in Memphis, but very similar. New Orleans was waaaay worse than even when we were in the desert out west. I could never live there.

17 Jen, a priorfatgirl July 26, 2010 at 12:23 pm

eh – you are NOT being a terrible host for Kepa. Real life. I think it is great that Kepa is getting to see you how are in all situations.

18 Mary July 26, 2010 at 12:49 pm

Good point I suppose. He already knows I hate the heat and the sun… I’m the sunblock queen. And totally not ashamed of any of this. ;)

19 KCLAnderson (Karen) July 26, 2010 at 12:23 pm

I am not a big fan of hot and humid although, like some others have said, since losing weight, heat is more bearable. I also think that as I get older, I prefer heat to cold…I could do without winter (here in Connecticut). If I had my way? The seasons would go like this: from January 1 to June 1, it would be spring. It would never get below 45 degrees or hotter than 70. From June 1 through September 1, it would be summer and the temps would be between 65 and 85, but never humid. From September 1 through Thanksgiving, it would be fall (with temps like Spring) and then from December 1 through December 31, it would be winter, with a little snow and temps no lower than 30.

“Hating” or “loving” a workout regardless of the climate/environment is irrelevant to me, and I think this is the main reason why I’ve been able to stick with a solid fitness routine for the last 3+ years. Once I accepted that it was a daily obligation just like doing dishes, laundry, working and paying taxes, I didn’t struggle with my inner child who only wanted to do things she liked. It became so much easier. And once you get started with a workout, you stop caring whether you wanted to do it in the first place or not. Hating or liking it is a non-issue.

Couldn’t you and Kepa go to the gym together? Go to a pool? Or workout at home together? It seems you have options, depending on how you adjust your perspective.

Stick with it. Three days is totally doable for you!

Oh, I’ll do it for sure. We go on walks together around the time the sun goes down and the heat is bareable. And of course we do our walking in the mall/walmart like old people. But I’m going to do my three workouts on top of that stuff that we do. It’s definitely doable and will get done, I’m, just doing it INSIDE!!

22 Anna @ Lily Hue July 26, 2010 at 12:38 pm

Oh, I hate the heat too! We had a couple weeks when I felt like I was melting here! But now it’s getting cooler fortunately, and when I get out at 7 am to run it’s almost cold!
The DVDs sound as a good solution! Isn’t there a lake or a public (not expensive) swimming pool you could go to?

You know I feel your pain. :) I walked for an hour yesterday morning and I was a sodden mess when I finally got home. But I was a happy sodden mess, because I’d honored my commitment to myself. However inelegantly. :)

My gym is having some sort of “bring visitors free” on Saturdays right now. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll find out the particulars. Warning, though, I know it’s air conditioned, but after a few minutes of working out it surely doesn’t feel like it.(Hmm, then again, I don’t use a/c on the way to the gym, so maybe I’m just hot from the drive over.)

Anyway, let me know if y’all think you would like to work out on Saturday. I could also find out about any other sort of visitor privileges they have. I’m here to help!

I love the heat! I have a gym membership so I don’t have to worry about working out outside but if we are travelling and I have to I will walk/job outside in the morning as soon as I get up or in the evening after dinner when the sun is leaving. I don’t mind getting hot as long as I know that there is a/c and a cold shower waiting for me at the end.

We don’t have the intense heat here that you do there, and we definitely don’t have the humidity! But it’s been in the upper 80s lately, and that makes my normal after-work outdoors workouts a bit tougher. I have a few suggestions:

1. Get up really early and work out outdoors before the heat gets too bad! Early morning workouts are my friend during the summer.

2. Find a few gyms within 20-30 minutes of your house, and ask if they offer free two-week passes to non-members. You’d be surprised what you can get if you just ask!

3. Go for sunset or night-time walks if you live in a safe enough area to do so.

4. Suck it up and do some home workouts, but recruit Kepa and/or other friends to do some with you! It’s goofy but it can also be really fun and a total giggle-fest to do Tae Bo (or whatever) in your living room with a friend!

Hope this helps, and hope it cools off a bit there soon!

Hehe, not to shoot your ideas down, but 1 and 2 won’t work. :P However 3 and 4 are my exact plan, so that’s what’s happening! Except I’ll probably do the workout dvds alone. It feels so awkward to me to do a at home workout that I don’t want to do it with anyone else. I don’t mind classes at a gym, but hanging out in the living room? I’ll pass!

28 Lori (Finding Radiance) July 26, 2010 at 2:23 pm

The humidity is what gets me. Heat I can fairly well deal with for biking. I will still do that in heat. Running – nope. I don’t run outside in heat or humidity if I can help it. Sometimes that means getting up at the asscrack of the day before the sun shines to run. It just has to be done.

Do you have the 30 day shred? It’s twenty minutes (i think it’s more like 28) and it will give you decent cardio and a killer strength workout. You can do it first thing in the morn with Kepa and your workout is done for the day.

30 Mary July 26, 2010 at 6:22 pm

I don’t. I do have other workout dvds from Jillian though, so I might use those.

31 Rachel July 26, 2010 at 3:58 pm

My friend and I were discussing this yesterday. In the winter, it’s too cold to go outside and do anything and in the summer it’s too hot! I saw some girl running in 94-degree weather yesterday and I called her ‘crazy’ (it was a compliment). I am definitely an indoor gal when the going gets hot.

33 Tami July 26, 2010 at 4:13 pm

I hate the heat too! I am lucky that in Northern CA we don’t have much humidity. I beat the heat by walking outside early in the morning on hot days.

34 merri July 26, 2010 at 6:46 pm

Wow I am so the opposite of you. I hope nz is more temperate then for you. Here in sf it’s been chilly, of course, because its our cold time (50s and 60s). Im SO ENVIOUS of people who are having heat waves right now. I thrive on heat. I LOVE it (im an always cold person). Of course, when its snowy and cold in all those now-hot places, ill be happy to be living in SF. But anyway, ya it never gets too hot here to work out outside (most or no people even have a/c). Or too cold, really (we hardly use our heater in the winter). I just don’t like doing it. Actually, my gym is quite warm. Too warm. Especially our room for our workout classes, they get so steamy, maybe from all the windows and the sun creating a greenhouse effect. Its not hot outside but it does get stuffy inside! I cant workout in long pants or I die lol. I never do workouts at home either. Even though I had my parents get me a nice gym mat for xmas. And I have a workout ball..and even a couple weights.

36 Pubsgal July 26, 2010 at 7:40 pm

I live in coastal San Francisco Bay Area, so we have very cool temperatures year-round. (Oh, and lots of fog, which can get depressing after awhile.) I know that the heat and humidity would be terribly demotivating. I also don’t like working out to exercise DVDs when others are in the room, guess I’m not the only one! (I use mine early in the morning or when I know my family is distracted by other stuff.) It sounds like you’ve got a good plan for getting in some activity in spite of the heat.

I’m wondering if what you’re feeling, with regards to hosting Kepa, is perhaps a feeling of post-road trip letdown? Sometimes it’s hard getting used to being in one place after having a great vacation.

Yay for not wanting to do dvds with other people! Glad I’m not the only person like that. I just told Kepa I’m going to workout, went in the other room, and got it done. No prob.

Not really. I’m happy to be doing nothing (really) but just feel bad that we can’t do more outside. We like going to parks together and going on walks together and because of the heat I just don’t want to do those things. So it’s less about not being on vacation and more just the heat. I’m really happy to be at home and eating well – it’s awesome!

I hate summer. HATE. IT. I too “sweat like a man,” (as a previous commenter said, hehe) and I just feel so gross! And while I sweat like crazy when I workout, I am freezing the rest of the time because everywhere I go has the AC cranked way up, and I get cold a lot more than I used to.

I do not do well in the heat at I – very easily I get very flushed, dizzy and have a killer headache – no matter how much I eat and drink. And my fingers swell up like crazy. I’ve always been like this – it has nothing to do with weight. 8 years ago I trained to climb Mt Rainier on August 15th – Thankfully the summer was not like this one, which has been a killer, but the last 2 weeks were brutal. Even last week out playing with the kids in the midday sun my head was killing me.
