I wish I had some exciting stuff to talk about but unfortunately the sickness that started last week lasted up until now. I think I’m finally almost over it but not completely. Because of that I don’t have much to talk about unless you would like me to recap all six seasons of The Office that I watched during my sick time. Life in New Zealand when you are sick is not that exciting, but I’m going to show you around my life here anyway.
This week on my facebook page, Lisa Johnson left me a comment: It’s great watching you go through the process of “starting over” gets to remind everyone how hard it can be to establish a routine …
So true. Building routine is hard.
Before moving I spent three weeks roadtripping, a month living in Oregon, and another week on the road before that. Routine was not part of my daily life for a while and after two months of that I was literally craving the ability to build some routine into my life. But now that I’m settled in one place I’m realizing building routines into your life can be hard. Apparently a lot of routines get built around your work schedule and I don’t have a typical job here (although I’m looking for a part time job!). Without that huge anchor to build around I’m floudering a bit in developing some routine.
For instance, I still haven’t unpacked.
I justify it because a) I’ve been sick and b) we are moving to a new place in a month or so.
And I’m using the couch as my “office”:
Yes, that’s a Jamie Oliver cookbook under the glue and mug. I like it. He’s teaching me stuff.
And I use Kepa’s weight bench as my counter space because it’s in front of the mirror:
I’m a bad girlfriend fiance… I probably should let him use the weight bench, huh?
And the mirror is my favorite thing but it’s so new we haven’t even taken the cardboard off the edges:
I haven’t completely settled in here and carved out space for myself.
There is no good routine to my days yet but I’m hoping to change that. How? I’ve got a plan. (Yippee! Let us jump with the happiness of the plan making!)
1. Today I’m headed to the gym to join. I think that will go a long way to help me build some routines. I’ll pick a gym time and go every day and start working out again. After a few days stuck inside I’m craving a workout hardcore.
2. Set working hours for myself. I want to schedule my day so that I don’t spend all day blogging, writing and designing. I love all the stuff I do but I can easily get sucked into it and into the stuff that isn’t useful: Twitter, Facebook, web surfing, etc. If anyone works from home, can you give me some tips for this?
3. Print out my weekly planner and use it. During my days spent on the couch being sick I at least thought of some solutions for this. Since I love making lists (obviously) I decided to create a weekly planner for myself. It should help me make plans for the week and then keep them in a visible place so I accomplish them!
Hopefully those three things will help me get myself on a good routine. I’m really ready to make some more progress so that this area of my life catches up with the rest of me. I’ve made huge strides in other areas of my life while my health has taken a backseat. I’m still a lot better than I used to be, but I’ve reached the point where that’s just not enough. I’m ready to really try and to get to the next level fitness and health wise. I admit that I haven’t tried hard enough and have made excuses for myself so that I could prioritize other things ahead of this. But losing weight is still one of my top priorities (planning a wedding a big reminder of this) and I’m ready to build my routines around that fact. Routines of awesomeness.

Feel free. :)
honestly, if i were moving in a month i wouldn’t be able to unpack either. hope you get to feeling better soon!
Thanks. Yeah, it seems pointless when we are just going to move somewhere else soon(ish).
That cardigan your wearing is sooo cute!!

Aww thanks! I’m trying to stay warm. ;)
I still haven’t unpacked from moving in April!
I guess it takes time, and patience and priorities….
Which is “first things first” sometimes.
Other things can wait!
That totally makes me feel better! I probably won’t wait that long though. ;) I do want to eventually feel like I’m at home in New Zealand and not just visiting.
I lived out of my suitcase for a month while I lived with my dad in Cambodia :D Sometimes unpacking just isn’t necessary.
Love your mirror! It’s awesome. I am on the hunt for a nice mirror.

Yeah we found it at a store when we weren’t really even looking. It’s so awesome.
Good plan! So glad you’re working a schedule out for yourself. It’ll help so much.

Hope you’re feeling better soon, sucks being sick when you’re starting a new life in NZ .. but there’s plenty of time for all that.. rest, plenty of fluid and GET WELL :)
and.. love seeing someone else mad about making lists too phew LOL :)

I bet the move will help a lot. I think it’s very hard to move into a space that has previously been the sole domain of someone else, particularly if it’s a romantic relationship (though I think platonic roommates have some difficulty with shared space also).
Agreed. It’s been hard because this is where Kepa has lived his entire life. I stayed here as a guest a month in January, but that doesn’t mean I’m completely in my element here. It would be nice to be on even ground. ;)
I am utterly impressed with you! I have never gone through such a great adventure and I suspect I would struggle with missing a routine and change. Yes, I did once move halfway across the country. But I thought it was temporary for a couple of years of grad school and my parents were here. You are very brave:)

I love this blog. I am on a journey to be in a “maintenance mode”. I started a blog called My Quest to Wear Waistbands: An average woman’s journey to be the average size. It makes light of the weight loss battle! You may enjoy.

i swear by using a planner. i don’t know how i survived without one. taking pen to paper and actually scheduling in time to do things i need to do increases the likelihood of me actually doing it about a million times. good luck with the routine…i am sure it will all come together slowly but surely. :)

Good for you! Personally, I’ve found that 1) moving timelines have a way of being “moving targets” unless they are written in stone (ie., signed leases/closing signatures), and 2) I function much better when organized. I can just think better and exhale when things aren’t cluttered (which happens so rarely that I remember those moments clearly), and when I have a system and the extra “stuff” is gone. Plus, I’m not constantly looking for wherever I last put that really important thing I need right now.
So, playing devil’s advocate here, although there is something to be said for living out of a suitcase — maybe moving in, if only just a little, would help? You could get organized and that would probably help alot with time management, projects, motivation, etc. I find that organization is key to being able to find stuff, get a routine, and plus it’s fun and just feels good. Plus, then you both can use the weight bench :)
In any case – keep up the awesomeness and keep us posted on your journey!
I function better that way too, but I really don’t like packing and unpacking enough to do it twice. ;)
I’m using the weight bench because there is nowhere else to put stuff like that. Moving will *hopefully* give me some bathroom space. ;)
even though you’ve been ill, mary, you look so cute! happiness does that for people. yay!
as far as getting routines going, the only thing that works for me is to make sure it’s something i like to do. otherwise, i can find a million reasons not to make it routine.
I totally need Routine Awesomness. Having been on vacation for 8 weeks this summer and now being thrown back into work and son’s school and his activities – it’s just chaos. I’m not taking time for myself – not eating well, not exercising. I need a routine!
Hope you are feeling better soon!!!

Umm your place looks like mine..only ive lived in mine for a year. Do you know I have a mirror packed in cardboard that I bought probably over 3 yrs ago? Lol. I never have found a good place to attach it to the wall..i think it’s a sign that ikea wasn’t a good mirror place and I need a better one. Its hard making a place look like those houses do in magazines.. I find that my routines keep me from doing things (such as making the house look cute). I spend so much time doing all the routine stuff every day (get up, go to work, go to gym, come home, make dinner, go to bed) that there’s no space for anything extra… so sometimes not having a routine can be much more productive. Youre more flexible so if something needs to be done, you can do it! My 2 routineless days (the weekend) arent NEARLY enough time to get everything done! PS I write everything into my calendar on my phone..so I think your planner idea is a good one!

Haha. I could totally see buying a mirror then never knowing where to put it so it stays in cardboard forever. Hilarious.
Those pics are great!!! I so get your #2!!!!! ;-)

It is tough to live out of a suit case, things will be better once you have moved and feel like you are settled. In the mean time you do need to have order to your days.
I am big on making a to do list every day. Prioritize what needs to be done and then start working your way through the list!
You might want to check out the website FlyLady.net. Kelly develops a lot of routines that keeps your life out of CHAOS.
I’m such an organisational freak that even though I would be moving in a month I would have unpacked, I’m always doing double work because of that :D
Lisa is so right and building a routine for me can be challenging BUT my first step in making any place I am for whatever length of time a HOME.
