I’m a bit slow with dates sometimes. I tend to lose track of what day it is and am always slow to catch on to month and year changes. Basically, I just realized it was July and that means half the year is gone.
Where did it go? It seems like it’s been the fastest year ever and it keeps speeding by.
I had a lot of goals for this year and some I’ve had to let go while others I’ve already accomplished. Here’s a mid-year check in regarding my goals.
2011 Goals Update
Accomplished
- Complete a triathlon. – Completed Jan 23!!
- Pay off credit card debt. – Done as of this week. I paid off over $5,000 is credit card debt this year (it was hanging around from that horrible year after college when I got depressed and gained both weight and debt). I’m a very non-typical bride – I focused on paying off debt instead of spending on our wedding.
- Find a part time job. – I destroyed this goal with my awesome FULL TIME job!
Happening or Upcoming
- Clean up my eating/quit binge eating. – I’m in therapy for the binge eating so I’m working on it. It’s an ongoing process.
- Learn to sew. – Not yet but I’ve got a sewing project and an opportunity to learn.
- Read a book a week. – I’ve lost count of books because I keep track on multiple lists in multiple places, but I’m averaging a book a week to week and a half.
- Run a 5k. - I’m up to a mile at a time which is great but I’ve still got a ways to go. This will definitely happen this year though!
- Get married and have the best wedding ever. – Our wedding has been majorly downsized yet I’m more excited about it than ever. It’s going to be simple, casual park wedding in Memphis and a second reception in New Zealand. Fun!
On Hold
- Cook my way through a cookbook. – I need to find a new dairy-free cookbook to cook through since my eating habits have changed drastically since the start of the year.
- Ride 2011 miles on my bike. – Not having a bike while living in Memphis has made this goal next to impossible. I’m hoping to still hit the halfway mark for this goal by the end of the year.
- Increase A Merry Life traffic. – Remember how yesterday I was thinking I’m a blog failure? This is why. Traffic is completely static and I’ve got no time right now to increase it.
Mid-Year Recap and Look Ahead
Favorite Moments From Life in NZ 2011:
- Hitting the expat wall. Yeah, everything in NZ wasn’t great and in January I was having a rough time with anxiety and not finding a job. It sucked, I was sad… but the thing about hitting a low point is that it gets better!
- Swimming in the local pool.
- Trips to the beach.
- Road trips and celebrations.
- My first spin class experience.
- First bike ride of the year. This pretty bike ride. Every other awesome bike ride we went on.
- Pasifika Festival, Auckland Lantern Festival, and pretty much every other fun festival.
There are some things I really miss about New Zealand. I’ve been thinking about it more and more lately, especially whenever I want to go for a bike ride!
Best Parts From the first half of 2011:
- Finishing my first triathlon. (Triathlon Recap, Lessons Learned From My First Triathlon, Beginner Triathlon Training Resources)
- Learning how to salsa dance and salsa dancing with Kepa.
- Starting therapy. (How to find a therapist and first session notes here.)
- Kepa and I adopting our baby Señor Kitty.
- My new job at Rocketfuel. From the first day to now it’s been awesome. I work on the same stuff I teach other bloggers and I even teach people how to use WordPress!
- Becoming a Polar Ambassador because Polar changed the way I workout.
What’s Happening in the second half of 2011:
- More yoga & zumba & weightlifting & fitness that I love.
- Getting married to the love of my life!
- Moving back to New Zealand and finally getting our own place.
Those are the big ones. And they are big! I see only good things in my future.
How are you doing halfway through the year?

Ummmm…My goals took a hit because of injury, but I’m back on track. I won’t meet the specifics, but I will still be trucking along on my journey by the end of the year and I consider THAT an accomplishment. :)

I meant to comment when you posted about giving up the blog, but I am doing about 20000 things at once and my dissertation so I never got to it.
Don’t. I always want to do the same thing, b/c no one reads or comments on my blog, or if they comment, they send me an email or comment on twitter or fb. Which is good, but not the same, if you know what I mean. It is your blog, and for you, and as much as bloggers want traffic and comments, it is all about you and the journey.
You look amazing, and you are going to be a beautiful bride! :)
Wow, time really flies! I’m going to have to do my own check-in on my resolutions for 2011. I have a feeling mine will be a mix of some that I’ve done, some in progress, and some abandoned.

Don’t quit your blog! I LOVE your blog…which you know, should be reason enough to keep blogging. ;)
My running goals are going awesome this year, but I have surgery scheduled in August and won’t be able to run for a month. :( But, I’m just trying to do as much running as possible beforehand!

It sounds like you’re on track for a lot of things and you have to prioritize because you can’t do everything. :-)
You made me go back to see, how AM I doing so far this year? 25 lbs down since the beginning of the year. (May was a wash due to vacation/getting off vacay weight which I expected) I sprained my thumb on said vacation so I was forced to find alternate workouts to do because quitting isn’t an option and it had been awesome so far. We took a hot air balloon ride over Napa so cross one off the bucket list. The 2nd half of the year is going to ROCK!

You’re all kinds of awesome! xo
Ooh congrats on paying off all that debt! I seriously messed up my finances/credit in the years after college. My whole early 20s. Finally almost fixed… But that’s a really big accomplishment you did! Yay! Being a book addict, I should probably make a goal to SLOW DOWN my reading to a book a week. I get lost in those things sometimes.. you’re so crafty with your flowers and other little things, I can see you taking to sewing and designing some really cute things! Can’t wait to see what you do! (I learned as a child but never took to it). I’m surprised your blog traffic is static, you always seem to have lots of comments, and your blog is usually the first or at least one of the first I read each day. you have some super exciting things coming the rest of this year, cant wait to read along with them. Your blog is never boring. My half year so far has been pretty good, one of the highlights being my baby niece (the 1st!) being born in april & also lots of fun times with friends.

Thanks! It took forever but I’m glad it’s done with!
My blog isn’t growing. It’s got pretty steady traffic though and a lot more than a lot of blogs so I’m still happy with it but it’s weird to not be actively growing it.
Congrats on being debt-free! It’s an awesome feeling, isn’t it? Drew and I got rid of our student loan debt last year.
For a dairy-free cookbook, check out The Real Food Diet Cookbook by Dr. Josh Axe. I was the project manager for the book when I worked for him, so I’m obviously a little biased, but it has some really great recipes! :)

Thanks! We still have student loans but those will be gone next. :)
I’ll check out that cookbook!
I swear getting debtfree changed my whole life and world outlook.
now I had a CRAPTON of debt (unavoidable debt but still) and it took eons but I felt worlds LIGHTER when it was gone.
CONGRATS!

Thanks! It’s pretty awesome! I might dedicate a post to it actually because it’s a big thing. :)
You are sounding positive again, I love it! Don’t focus too much on what’s in front of you, look all the way around. See all these things you’ve completed, that’s beautiful. And you are going to have the most amazing wedding. Don’t worry about the traffic to your blog right now, because soon it will start growing you’ll see. Just keep on being positive.

Please stop commenting on whether I sound happy/positive or negative/sad. Seriously. It’s annoying. Depending on what the topic is it’s going to sound one way or another and it doesn’t need to be pointed out. Thanks.
I’m sorry, I didn’t meant to upset you.
