Sometimes you just need to take a few days off. Labor Day weekend was a few days off for me. I wanted to relax and spend a few days offline away from blogging and the interaction of social media and work.
For Labor Day weekend I decided to go with a friend to camp out at the Tennessee River with her family. It’s a few hours from Memphis mostly in the middle of nowhere.
They own some land on the Tennessee River and go up there several times a year to relax and decompress from the stresses of daily life. Most people up there have a camper or two and leave them there to visit when they feel like getting out on the river. Almost everyone has a boat or two as well and bring the boats when they are ready to hit the water.
While I was there I went on a few walks around the area to see what people do up there. I saw a ton of people with campers and boats living a very simple life out on the water. It didn’t seem that out of reach and it definitely seemed like fun! I’m glad I walked around and explored.
(Excuse the expresssion in the selfie… not sure what was going on while I was walking around the road!)
For the weekend we did what the family does every time they visit the river… We went out on the boat, chilled on the beaches (yeah, rivers have beaches!), swam a bit, jumped on a trampoline in the water, ran around on Seadoos, played with all the dogs and generally had a fun time.
I loved the little dogs and how much they loved being out on the River! I never thought much about taking your dogs on vacation but going somewhere like the Tennessee River makes sense to bring the pups and let them play in the water and on the boat. If you’ve got a dog that likes to swim, you might as well bring them along!
Tennessee River Trip Recap Thoughts
Unfortunately it started raining during our time out on the river so we had to leave earlier than planned. I still enjoyed the break for a bit. Spending time on any body of water is super relaxing and fun for me so it was nice to experience the Tennessee River with people that go up there all the time. I didn’t know how many people go up there to boat and and swim and play! It’s definitely nice to know another nearby day trip location from Memphis that I can visit again.
A relaxing Labor Day weekend trip where I didn’t work or workout was exactly what I needed. It let me let go of all my worries and stresses and simply be with the people around me.
A few days off without exercise and the stress of work was just what I needed. I feel good. I feel relaxed. I feel ready to hit the gym hard the rest of the week and make major progress on projects at work. Taking a few days off was just what I needed and I’ll remember in the future that I need to do this every once in a while… especially when I’m stressed out like I have been. Let me hit the water and sun with friends for a few days and everything will be right in the world!
My favorite part of the weekend was probably running sprints through the grass barefoot with a young dog chasing me. We were just playing and running and we were both having the best time. It made me extremely happy and it reminded me desperately how much I want a dog. Clearly I’m a dog person and I’d love a dog I can take to the water and take out on the river with me! Also, running is much more fun with a dog playing and running with you!
After the trip I came back and spent some time hanging out with my mom, who is always fun to hang out with. I’m glad I was able to set aside some time on the weekend off to spend time with her.
How about you? Do you like taking off a few days to feel refreshed?
