Slumptastic

in Thoughts

This past weekend was my first full weekend back in New Zealand and I loved it!

Meetups & Fun

This weekend was full of activity. Kepa’s friends (the groomsmen in our wedding) all arrived back in NZ and they each had little homecoming parties and hangouts with their families and friends. We went around to a couple and greeted them and spent time with everyone which was fun.

Kepa and I also met someone new this weekend, a fellow weight loss blogger who has been very successful in his journey – Rich!

We met at the Sky Tower in Auckland and went all the way to the very top to eat at Orbit, the revolving restaurant on top of the tower.

I’m scared of heights (yes, despite bungy jumping) so the elevator ride was scary as was looking out the windows at certain spots. But the overall effect was amazing. We stayed for a few hours so we managed to rotate around the city and ocean view several times. It’s an amazing view and experience in case you ever get the chance!

The food wasn’t bad either. I ordered the tuna which came with potato slices, egg, green beans, tomato, and basil.

It was amazing but not quite as good as our chocolate fondant and ice cream dessert.

Yes we ate quite a bit before we remembered a photo. It was just that good.

I really enjoyed the food and the company. It was great to meet Rich and learn a bit about his life and journey which is very inspiring. He ran the Auckland marathon the very next day. Congrats on your first marathon Rich!

Workout & DOMS

Friday I rejoined the gym and went for a quick workout and shower. This turned out to be a great idea and a horrible idea at the same time.

I did squats which is one of my favorite exercises, because I thought it would be a great compound exercise to use for a quick workout. I even used less weight than I normally do to ease my way back into exercise – only around 65 lbs (30ish kg).

YIKES!

Taking over three weeks off from exercise (not intentional, but it happened) meant my body did not respond happily to the first workout back. I did not struggle during the workout but my body was super-sore-ouchies for the last two days following. Our trips into Auckland CBD were much more difficult with sore quads that ached going up and down hills and stairs.

Remind me not to take lots of time off again, okay? Thanks.

Even after writing the above I’ve skipped the gym for the last three days. Truth: I’m finding it hard to establish both a working routine and an exercise routine. It was so easy back in Memphis but trying to figure out a new schedule on top of having some post wedding let down has me feeling very…slumpish…slumptastic…in a slump.

I’m feeling low and like I need to “get back to it” but I’m just not sure how. I know it takes some time to adjust to everything changing, but I’d like it to be a faster process.

All in all it was a good weekend. I’ve been having fun but there is still the lingering feeling of missing my routine and regular exercise. I’m hoping to figure these things out soon because I know it will make me much happier!

That looks super yummy! I bet it would be pretty awesome to eat up in the sky tower. If I ever go to Auckland I want to eat there.

It’s always hard to get back to the gym after being away for so long but I think you have a good excuse you know… getting married and moving across the world. Don’t be too hard on yourself. <3

It took me MONTHS to adjust to the new fall schedule around here.
and I hated every moment of it—but Ive found my groove.

How fun meeting a new friend. I checked out a bit of his blog but will have to read more. Awesome story! That restaurant looks great.

Isn’t it funny how quickly our bodies get out of shape when we take time off? When we get back from Hawaii every year, the two weeks out of a regular routine rears it’s head and we know we have to reduce the first strength workout and work back up. It’s kind of fun though. I know, I’m weird. The best way to establish a routine is, not to sound cliche, but just do it. Sometimes we end up overthinking it. Just fit it in where you can in 10 minutes blocks if that’s what it takes. You know how to do it, you got it girl! :)

I 100% relate to this, and I didn’t move half way across the world! ;) It’s so hard to get back in that groove, especially after having such a huge event like a wedding. It’s been a month since I got married and I’m just now kind of back up to my peppy self. It’s weird – I never thought that “slumpish” feeling would come over me, but it totally did.

Hang in there, friend! You’ll be kicking ass soon … you always do! :D

Thank you for your post! I was just thinking the same thing about my own slump this past couple of weeks- I am trying to commit myself going back to regular workouts! I have to admit I need to identify a goal that I can work towards to that is not related to scale number…

Mary -

Sorry to hear that the post-wedding blues are starting to settle in. It seems to me that all the activity of the last few months kept you motivated and feeling pretty good. Hopefully settling into a schedule and keeping busy will keep your spirits high – good luck.

Also, the food looks absolutely delicious! I bet the exhilarating atmosphere made it taste even better!

I’ve been in a slump for 3 months. It wasn’t like a was in a groove and on a roll while i was in lafayette before moving to Austin! I have to find my groove and get into it!

Hang in there, Mary. I’m not a big lover of change and even as I was reading your post my left eyelid started twitching in sympathy (it does that when I’m stressed). I know, though, that you will work out a routine and the more you exercise the better you’ll feel. Here’s a virtual hug to carry you through. *HUG*

Thank you so much Cassia! Change (lots of it) all at once can suck and be stressful even if it’s good change. But thank you for the hug and kind thoughts!

Right! What I remember from the handful of psych classes I took is that there is good stress (eustress) and bad stress (distress) and that even the good stuff can be taxing on us. You’re amazing and I have no doubt that you’ll be back in the swing soon. And because I forgot to mention it before, I LOVE your wedding pic’s. It is so wonderful to see a wedding where it’s clear that everyone (especially the bride and groom) are having a wonderful time!

Oh cool, there is a place just like that restaurant in new Orleans. I went years ago and it’s also a club, which is when I went, so I didn’t eat, but such a fun idea.
