2011 Goals Finished + Goals for 2012

in Goals

I like setting goals (or new year’s resolutions if you will). I think that even if you don’t achieve them they still help guide you towards things you really want. I set a few goals for 2011 at to help guide me through the year and today felt like a good time to check in and see how I finished up the year with achieving my goals.

2011 Goals Update

Accomplished

  • Complete a triathlon. – Completed my first triathlon Jan 23 and it was awesome!!
  • Pay off credit card debt. – I paid off over $5,000 in debt this year before getting married, mostly with money from the blog and online work.
  • Find a part time job. – I found an awesome FULL TIME job! I’m hoping to stay with this company for a long while if it works out. So glad I made this goal happen!
  • Read a book a week. – Technically I didn’t read a book every week but I read more than 52 books this year so I’m considering it a success! I really enjoy reading so it wasn’t hard to accomplish when I had time.
  • Increase A Merry Life traffic. – I didn’t do as much with this as I wanted but naturally traffic still grew a bit. I’m hoping next year I can do more with this.
  • Clean up my eating/quit binge eating. –  Therapy for binge eating really helped me accomplish this since I haven’t binged for a few months now. Major win.
  • Get married and have the best wedding ever. – Best success of the year I think. I loved our wedding – it was the happiest most fun wedding! (some wedding photos)

Not Accomplished

  • Learn to sew. – Can watching episodes of Project Runway count? No? I can hand sew and repair some of Kepa’s clothes this year but I’m still looking for an opportunity to use a machine. I underestimated the cost of a basic sewing machine so I haven’t bought one yet but do plan to save up and get one.
  • Run a 5k. - Nope. I stopped running after the beginning of the year
  • Cook my way through a cookbook. – I started this with Green Lite Bites cookbook but then learned I was having problems with dairy and then I moved and the cook a cookbook idea didn’t happen.
  • Ride 2011 miles on my bike. – Not even close really. I stopped counting when I moved to Memphis because I didn’t have a bike there. Not being able to bike for 6 months of the year meant I had no possible way to finish this one!

Not bad overall! I consider it a pretty successful year when I have accomplished more goals than not.

And since I like using these types of goals to set up my year and what I’m striving for, here are my goals for the new year!

2012 Goals

  1. Pay off my remaining student loans as part of plan to be debt free.
  2. Prepare myself physically (weight in control + active) , mentally (prepared for birth and taking care of baby) and financially (debt paid off + money saved for baby expenses) for eventual pregnancy.
  3. Achieve a healthier weight (part of goal #2) and body composition.
  4. Buy a sewing machine and learn to sew clothes (seriously!).
  5. Read 52+ books. Read at least 1 book per month for health + fitness.
  6. Do a cartwheel!

That’s it! I’m actually not setting a ton of year long goals but a couple on there a MAJOR ones that will require a lot of work and dedication.I want to focus on those things and knock them out of the park this year rather than try doing a lot of other little things.

Then there is the fun one of doing a cartwheel which I haven’t done for years. I don’t remember the last time I did a cartwheel but I was probably around 11 years old. I can’t wait to do one again!

What are your goals for the new year?

Wooooohoo! Congrats on paying down $5,000 in debt — that is a HUGE accomplishment! I love that you’ve got this checklist of things to do to get baby-ready!! =) I feel like that must add so much meaning and weight to your goals! =)

Thanks! Paying off debt is kind of no fun but it’s necessary!

Since we both REALLY want kids it does give a lot more meaning and importance to the goals. We want to be good parents so we are going to do our best to be really ready for them.

Congrats on reaching most of the goals you set for yourself! That’s amazing and great motivation to know you can do anything you set your mind to. I know several girls who have had babies recently and all of them said getting into shape made their pregnancies relatively easy compared to women who didn’t exercise and strength train in preparation so that’s a great goal to have.

My goals for the year are to add yoga because it’s a big component we’re missing and on high cal days we only want to eat places that make our eyes roll back in our heads, not settle for something just because. If it’s not inspiring, don’t eat it. I also have a personal goal to cook a LOT more homemade things including tortillas, breads and things that I can control the ingredients, not a chain store.

Those are great goals! I like your goals because they will bring a higher quality of life… as goals like this should!

Congrats on your successful year. I’m so glad you are working on your fitness and health. I lost 60+ pounds 12 years ago, before getting pregnant with my daughter. So much easier to be pregnant at a Normal weight. And fun memories of getting fit after pregnancy by walking with the baby in the jogging stroller.

Happy new year and enjoy all New Zealand has to offer. Fabulous place. :)

Thanks Karen! It’s good to know that it’s easier to get and be pregnant at a healthier weight.

Hey I got my sewing machine at an estate sale for cheap and it’s a singer.

10 Mary December 27, 2011 at 1:34 pm

That’s smart! I will have to check out garage/estate sales here.

I am with you on 3,4 and 6.

2011 was spent losing 5 lbs in the first 2 lbs then gaining 25 :(

I bought a sewing machine 2 years ago and has been on my yearly To Do list since then – I made a couple of things. I would have liked to have made stuff when the kids were babies, but now I want to do fun things with my daughter.

My daughter has started gymnastics and keeps asking me to do a cartwheel. I am too embarrassed to even try around her. Hopefully losing the weight and just moving more will help with that.

Here is to an awesome 2012!

Sweet! Let’s do it!

I just was googling around and found your blog. This particular entry is really inspiring to me (I have yet to read more though!) Just with goals (I have lots, but they are, to date, not in a tidy list….) and with the new year starting up right away… I think I’m gonna make a nice list of goals of my own!
Thanks for this entry, thumbs up, I enjoyed it :)

I have NEVER been able to do a cartwheel, even as a kid. I’ve never had that kind of coordination!! Great goals and congrats on doing so well with 2011 ones!

2011 was a great year for you so I can only imagine what you will accomplish that isn’t on your list. I love your goals for this year. Getting ready for a baby is a great motivation. And one you have that little bundle of joy it will be continuous motivation cause they never sit lol. Between my three kids I can barely sit for a meal but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

18 Mary December 27, 2011 at 7:15 pm

Thanks Rachelle! Yeah, the fun thing is even when you set goals you still accomplish OTHER stuff that is awesome too. :)

Love the goal…..haven’t decided if I’m stealing the cartwheel goal or the ideal behind it. I think we’re in similar head-spaces…as dh and I also paid down almost $5k in debt and are spting on being healthy enough to conceive…(I do have one – got pg at 298 lbs) but number 2 w bed to do right as I’m older….I look forward to.following along.

Mary – you did amazing for 2011! That debt reduction is huge in this day & age! The job too – so glad you love it!!!

Your 2012 – achievable – the SMART way – good for you! Maybe I should go back to my gymnastic days too! I do plan to try yoga & Pilates! Never giving up the weights though! :-)

I think you did great with your 2011 goals! All the best with the ones for 2012 – I love what you want to achieve. I haven’t set goals for 2012 as such, but my focus for the year will definitely be on consistency and taking things one day at a time.
