One of our current favorite things to do is visit Shelby Farms Dog Park. It’s a small part of a huge park here in Memphis. It’s a semi-fenced in area of 100 acres where dogs can play off leash in fields, trails, lakes, and ponds. Basically it’s JuJu’s favorite place on earth.
So when I told her PARK yesterday, she couldn’t wait to get in the car. She knows the greatness she is about to encounter.
Every time we go to Shelby Farms it’s a great chance to practice our doggy behavior. I always make her sit and wait and pose for a photo before she gets her FREE command to run and roam. She’s a pretty good sport about it these days.
What a cutie, right?
On beautiful days the park is a great place for us both to exercise and enjoy nature. We can walk for hours while JuJu runs and explores and plays with other dogs she meets.
This time our visit to Shelby Farms was extra special because JuJu’s friend Adri came with us! Adri belongs to my best friend who just moved back to Memphis. She’s a Yorkie and Miniature Pinscher mix. You wouldn’t expect my pitweiler and her yorkiepin to be homies, but they have enjoyed hanging out so far. JuJu is great with puppies.
Adri tried to keep up with JuJu and roamed as much as she could in the large grass but clearly it wasn’t a fair fight.
JuJu also got to experience her favorite part of the park – swimming! I can stand in the same spot for hours and throw the ball into the lake for her. She’s definitely an island dog – she loves the water. She will play fetch in the water until she literally expends all her energy and can’t swim. Well, this has never happened but I think she might one day run out of energy!
Though she seems to never run out of energy while we are at the park, it definitely wipes her out afterwards! This is the pose she assumes every time we come home from Shelby Farms.
A tired dog is a happy dog!
If you’re in the Memphis area and haven’t visited Shelby Farms yet, then get yourself out there! There are a ton of recreational activities there besides the dog park. Whether you want to hike, bike, run, paddle, you’ll have the opportunity. Find more info at www.shelbyfarmspark.org.
