Due to family obligations, scheduling, and traveling, our family decided to have Thanksgiving this weekend on Saturday! At first we talked about just meeting to go to a restaurant but settled on having a potluck instead. Who doesn’t love a good potluck dinner?
We all picked courses and spent Saturday afternoon cooking.
I chose to make sausage balls for an appetizer because they have always been a family favorite for holidays. When we were kids we would always help my mom make sausage balls for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Hot Sausage Balls Recipe
I made two batches, one with hot sauce and one regular. The recipes is super easy:
- 1 pound (hot) sausage
- 1 pound sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 cups Bisquick baking mix
- Louisiana hot sauce
- Preheat oven to 350
- Mix sausage and biquick together
- Mix in cheese and mix everything together fully
- Form into 1 inch size balls
- Bake 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown
- If you want them hotter, add a dash of hot sauce on the top after they come out of the oven.
My awesome little brother made the turkey along with hams and wings so we had a ton of food with everything else people brought.
The spread included:
- ham wrapped in bacon
- sausage balls
- garlic and herb bread
- tomato and basil bread
- corn pudding
- green bean casserole
- sweet potato casserole
- lots of desserts
Everything tasted great and it was super fun to get together with the whole family. It’s one of the first times we’ve all cooked and contributed to the Thanksgiving meal instead of just having my mom make everything. I’m thrilled that my brothers all contributed in some way – it made Thanksgiving a lot easier to just make one or two dishes each.
Our newest family got lots of attention from my mom who loves her grandchild. Having a baby at all our family events is new and super fun!
Super sweet, right?
This group of people is my favorite!
One Thanksgiving celebration done, one to go.
This time of year is the absolute best. The holidays can be hard and stressful at times but they are also full of love and camaraderie and the best things in life. I hope you all get to celebrate and feel these things this week!
