The Prime Overview
Integrative neurologist Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary discovered a beautiful side effect to the eating and lifestyle tools she gave her brain patients struggling with diseases like Parkinson’s. She found when they ate to repair their brain and health they also shed excess weight.
She has now written The Prime, a book that shows readers how weight gain is a result of your body being in a constantly toxic and inflammatory state. She shows how not preparing or “priming” your body for weight loss makes you fight a constant uphill biochemical battle where permanent weight loss is next to impossible.
This big idea behind the book is that permanent weight loss is so hard because you are fighting your body, brain, and gut—and the cravings they create. Instead you should be doing several simple things to prime your body for clearer thinking, a smarter gut, more energy, better health, and “spontaneous” weight loss.
Using both cutting-edge science from her work as a neurologist combined with ancient wisdom of Ayurvedic medicine, she lays out a plan that gets people primed to lose weight – no matter which “plan” they follow.
Some praise for the book:

The Prime Highlights
The Prime is not strictly a weight loss book. It’s not mean to be a diet fad. Instead it is meant to lay a foundation out for you that can repair your body. This repair can then lead to spontaneous weight loss thanks to the healthy practices you have built.
Highlights and topics the book covers:
- The importance of neuroadaptation
- How food addiction works and why it’s been so hard for you to diet in the past
- How your brain works regarding food
- Why what you digest is just as important as what you eat
- How to determine if you have a “Leaky Brain” & how The Prime can help
The 4 Stages of the Prime:
- Activate a Biochemical Shift
- Crush Cravings (No Willpower Required)
- Ignite Energy and Fat
- Biohack Your Lifestyle Habits
These 4 stages of priming your body to work correctly lead to spontaneous weight loss. You’ll see in the book how they can help you shed pounds by adding simple teas and supplements to your routine. You’ll learn how to live life fully Primed, eating and living for your best health.
My Thoughts On The Prime
I loved the the author was an integrative neurologist who didn’t start out to write a weight loss book – she started to describe the program used to help reverse neurological conditions. The program helped reverse things like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. It just so happened that because it helped eliminate toxic inflammation patients also lost significant amounts of weight.
The idea that weight loss isn’t the goal but instead the result of healing your body and giving it what it needed really spoke to me.
It also stood out to me in the beginning when she said that people doing this program weren’t very motivated until they saw the weight loss side effect. It blew my mind that the habits designed to help with terrible diseases weren’t motivating enough on their own. It just confirmed how much we value weight loss.
I’ll admit before reading this book I knew very little about Ayurvedic medicine. It simply wasn’t something I thought much about or had any interest about learning.
In the end, I enjoyed reading this book. It’s well-written, informative, and lays our a really intriguing plan. Can I say if the program works definitively? No. Until I try it out it’s all just feel-good, hope-it-works, sounds-great stuff. I can however say that reading the book made me very curious about these topics and really made me want to try out the steps included.
I do want to immediately try doing one thing and luckily I have a blueprint for what to try first. During the interview with the author covered the first thing she would recommend doing if you can only try one thing from the book: “I would say the one thing you can start immediately is the Prime tea. It’s so gentle but it has such a powerful effect, and people start noticing changes fairly quickly.”
Since the book lays things out in small steps that you can decide to start there as well and move on to the next thing and then the next. The little steps of moving on from the tea to the triphala to the lympathic brushing allows you to adjust to the new habits one at a time as your body adjusts as well.
