This trip makes me wonder if I’ll be flying back and forth between countries every 6 months. Or if eventually I’ll fully settle in one place with all aspects of my life in the same location. That would probably make everything easier, wouldn’t it? But I never aim for easy… just interesting.

Packing

I finally packed for my trip today!

I did this video while I was packing because I HATE packing and I figured it would make it more fun. I waited as long as I could to start packing I have two different types of packing: one way is fast and one way allows you to bring as much stuff as possible. This time I chose the fast method since I’m not taking much. On the way back I’ll do the opposite!

Anyway, enjoy the video.

In just a few hours I’ll be headed to the airport, then Australia, then back to the US. I wish it was a faster trip but I’ll make it.

I would be nicer if I didn’t have to be at the airport before 5 am.

Tips For Staying Healthy On A Long Haul Flight

I haven’t been anywhere in six months but I’m no stranger to traveling. I’ve lost count of my long flights as this point! I do have a healthy plan for the trip as I always do. Here’s my favorite tips to stay healthy especially on long haul flights:

Drink lots of water! This is especially important on the long flights. It’s so easy to get dehydrated. Dehydration plus not moving increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis, aka blood clots in your veins. Drink plenty the night before, at the airport, and on the plane.

Walk! Walk as much as you can. Walk at the airport and skip those travelators. Walk up and down the aisles every hour or so on the plane during a long flight. Walk while you can because you will be sitting on the plane plenty.

Stretch! Stretch whenever you get up to get your blood flowing and stop cramps and prevent pain.

Bring tools for comfort. On a long flight you need things like a neck pillow, headphones, eye mask, and ear plugs. Nothing is worse than spending 15 hours on a plane uncomfortable and unable to sleep or tune out the other people.

Take some healthy snacks. Pack some trail mix or some granola bars in your carry on if you can.

Pick healthy food choices at the airport. It’s tempting to pick junk at the airport but choosing healthier options will make you feel better and make the flight easier. Try to grab whole foods or something simple like a turkey sandwich and apple and skip the fast food. It might take more work to put together that kind of meal but it’s worth it.

Wear comfortable clothes. You don’t have to look like a complete slacker but you need to be comfortable. It makes a huge difference!

Those are my tips for staying healthy on a long haul flight. At least, that’s my plan for the next day and this post was my personal reminder!

See you on the other side!

What are your tips for traveling healthy?

A meeting in town (30 minute train ride both ways), work, a coffee date with a friend = busy day for me. An hour long workout seemed pretty low on the priority list, to the point that I wanted to skip it.

But I didn’t. I worked it into my schedule. Even though it’s going to be a long day for me I’m glad I did it.

Now I want to leave you with a post I wrote a while back but didn’t publish. Hopefully those of you who made new year’s resolutions are still going strong!

Healthy Ways To Start The Year Off Right

The new year represents a fresh start. If you over indulged during the holidays don’t worry about it. Binges and over eating happen but the best thing to do is move on as soon as you can. Let’s make the most of this new beginning, shall we? Here’s 12 ways to start the new year off right with healthier habits.

Set some goals. Ask yourself: What do you want to accomplish this year? Create some measureable goals that you can realistically achieve during the year (use numbers like lose 30 pounds rather than just lose weight).

Make a plan. Plan out what it will take to accomplish those goals. Break the goals down into smaller actions and schedule them into your normal life.

Find a friend or mentor. Having help will help you succeed. Reach out to someone in your life or even online who can help you stick with your healthy lifestyle goals.

Take a walk. It’s the easiest and possibly the healthiest form of exercise. It costs nothing and can be enjoyable. Try walking without a destination in mind.

Try a new fitness activity. You won’t know whether you hate or love something until you actually try it. Try one or two new things at the start of the year and keep trying things until you find something you love doing.

Drink more water. Time for eggnog and celebratory drinks is over. Grab the water and skip sodas, fruit drinks, and other calorie laden beverages.

Start tracking your food. You don’t have to calorie count (though it is good!) but being aware of the food you are consuming is important. Start tracking in whatever method works for you, online calorie counter, weight watchers, pen & paper – any way you want!

Stretch. Stretching tends to be the one physical activity a lot of us miss but it’s one of the best! Start the year right by stretching out your muscles after warming up for five minutes.

Eat more vegetables and fruit. This is a personal goal of mine all the time because it seems I never get enough. But I always keep aiming for 5-9 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Try this yourself in the new year and you will appreciate all the energy and nutrients your body gets from the extra produce!

Laugh. Work your ab muscles and get yourself in a better mood. Go to a comedy club or watch your favorite funny show.

Clean your house. Clearing physical clutter can help clear mental clutter and leave space for new healthier habits.

Let me make it easier on you. Just pick one healthy habit to start. Do this for two weeks until it sticks. Then pick a new habit. Stick with it until it sticks. Then another. You’ll slip up and mess up and it takes time, but change is possible. Sometimes you’ll have more trouble with one thing than others (for me I have more trouble with food than fitness), but any change in the right direction is positive. It’s not an all or nothing kind of deal… even a little success is worth it.

Let’s do this!

I think I’ve finally made peace with counting calories.

I’ve always hated counting calories. It felt tedious, annoying, and BORING. I hate hate hated doing it and tried everything to lose weight without counting calories. That never worked for me as with intuitive eating I became great at maintaining a weight loss but horrible at losing more. But I still persisted because counting calories just wasn’t something I wanted to do.

Lately (as in last week) I’ve finally made peace with counting calories. It’s not something I plan to do forever obviously but I am comfortable enough with it right now that I can totally keep it up for however long I need to get to a healthy weight. It doesn’t have the same negative feeling attached that it once did.

So how did I do this?

I let go of the idea that I need to eat different things all the time. I think in a way being a blogger and reading food blogs made this hard to do. For a long time I felt like I needed to eat like the bloggers and constantly be trying new recipes and new foods and eating a ton of varied things every day. I’ve finally learned that is not true and this is the thing that freed me to start enjoying the calorie counting.

I calculated the measurements and calories of my normal meals. There are some thing I love to eat. I was eating those things more often anyway so recently I just wrote down all the things I liked eating and how much of each thing made a meal. Then I worked out the calories on these items. I now have a list of several 300 ish calories breakfasts lunches and snacks that I love to eat. All I have to do is plug in the info to my current daily calorie count. This takes most of the work out of calorie counting for the majority of the day which makes me happy and makes me feel content with calorie counting.

I made it easy and gave myself wiggle room. Since I now really only have to calculate calories for one meal (dinner) or the occasional new and different snack or breakfast, calorie counting doesn’t seem as hard. It doesn’t seem as tedious. Once I finally accepted that it’s okay to eat the same things over and over I figured out a way to count calories that works for me.

It’s a form of peace that means I know what I’m putting in my body rather than guessing and hoping for the best (ah, intuitive eating) until I really learn the right amounts of food that I need. Calorie counting isn’t really as bad as I made it out to be. Nor that I’ve made peace with the idea and the process I’m feeling good and eating well for my goals.

Do you calorie (or point) count? What do you like about it? Or do you hate it?

This morning I woke up TIRED. I spent a good 15 minutes hitting the snooze button continually trying to figure out whether or not I should go to the gym.

I had a workout scheduled by my shoulders were sore and my body was so tired. I think the extra cardio session I squeezed in the night before wore me out.

Apparently I need to use this go to the gym pillow on my bed.

You know, a friendly reminder.

Luckily I had my own friendly reminder when Kepa called me. I couldn’t ignore his call so I answered and let him talk me into going to the gym. Talking to him woke me up so it was easier to get out of bed and get ready for a gym session.

It also helped knowing that I had a healthy lunch and snacks prepared for the day already. Knowing I didn’t have to do all that food prep work before leaving made it easier and I did in fact go workout this morning.

You know that saying, You never regret a workout? It’s true. (Unless you have a good reason like being sick or injured, of course.)

(Found that on Pinterest, not sure of the original source.)

That statement is pretty true for me and probably for a lot of you.

Don’t regret missing workouts. Just do them!

I wrote this post a few weeks before I actually finished paying off my credit cards. I wasn’t sure if I was going to post it or not because it’s personal in a way that I don’t normally share on this blog. But, I decided I might as well share it. Here goes.

-

I finally paid off my final credit card balance.

I’ve paid off a starting balance of roughly $5,500 in credit card debt in the past year, mostly with the little money I made from blogging. My new job only covered the last bit on one of the cards.

The Beginning: Rising Debts

Like a lot of people, I went through a period where I let my spending get away from me. It started at the end of my senior year of college and continued the year after where it coincided with depression and re-weight gain. The year I spent climbing back up to 251 lbs was also the period of my life where I used credit cards to live.

I covered a lot of things on my credit cards that I shouldn’t have. But I also covered a lot of things that felt essential – my computer for school, my camera that I still use today, the phone and light bills. I didn’t exactly spend frivolously with my cards during the time but because I had no more loan money and a crappy part time job at the time I didn’t know what else to do.

When I needed something, I used my credit card. It doesn’t take long for those purchases to add up.

Fixing Debt Mistakes

Up until now I’ve been working to pay off both of those mistakes I made during my “sad year” after college. Actually, for about two years I didn’t even touch my debt or try to reduce it. I just ignored it and pretended I didn’t make the mistakes that I had. I don’t even want to talk about how big of a mistake THAT was because the amount of interest I paid during that time makes me a bit sad. But this past year I decided to finally do something about it and get rid of the debt. I wanted to be debt free before getting married. I wanted to fix my debt mistakes.

Finding The Motivation

Debt reduction is hard. You are sending money to a company that gives you nothing in return because you already got what you paid for. At times it can feel like you are throwing money away (in a way you are with interest). You also might feel like the debt is so staggering that you might never get out from under it, even if the sum isn’t really that high. These feelings can be a barrier that keeps many people from even attempting to fix their debt problems.

You have to find motivation to pay off debt. You will need a strong source of motivation because when paying off debt aggressively you will probably have to do things differently than you normally would. You might have to stop eating out or stop buying new clothes. You might have to make tough decisions in order to find the money to make your debt disappear.

For me, my trigger was the death of my half-sister in 2010. It was hard to learn that she had committed suicide because she felt so hopeless over her debts and financial life. (There is always more to a person’s story than just one factor, but this was a big factor and one that stuck with me.) It broke my heart. It took me many months to process that event and come to terms with it but when I finally did I knew I didn’t want that to happen to me (or really anyone… ever). She was my initial motivation for learning about and changing my financial life.

Since it takes a while to pay off debt I had to make the tough decisions like living with family instead of being out on my own. Believe me, this was a hard, hard decision because this is usually a toxic environment for me. But I had the new motivation of being debt free before my wedding to get me through. And as always I still had the motivation of doing better and being better for my half-sister who couldn’t.

How I Did It: Paying Off My Credit Cards

There are a lot of different ways to pay off debt. In the beginning I didn’t know what to do so I did what I do best – I read blogs! I read a ton of financial blogs and websites and books and formulated a plan based on what I learned.

Education really is the first step but it’s only a small part of it. Knowing what to do and actually doing it are two completely different things. I made debt repayment a priority over other things like going on trips (other than necessary ones) and shopping. I made changes to how I grocery shopped like making a meal plan and shopping the sales. I did everything I could think of to save my very limited income in order to use it for debt repayment. I made temporary small sacrifices in order to get rid of the credit card debt. They were necessary when I was unemployed and relying on blog income.

As far as paying off the cards, most financial gurus like Dave Ramsey suggest you pay off the smallest first and move on to the bigger ones. This shows you progress early and excites you to keep going.

I did it the opposite way and paid off my largest card first. I did this mostly because of the difference in interest rates. I also did it because I knew I would feel a lot better once the bigger balance was gone. Sure it took longer but it felt amazing the day I had paid off that one credit card. From there it was just a process of continuing what I was doing so I could pay off the other card.

And now? I no longer have credit card debt.

Lessons Learned

Weight loss and money management have some similarities. They can both seem like impossible tasks in the beginning but with discipline they are achievable over time. You just have to keep at it even when you don’t seem to be making progress. Over time the little bits of progress you are making will add up to something substantial.

Being healthy isn’t just about exercising and eating right. It’s about being balanced and whole in all areas of your life – including finances. I’m happy to say that this is one area where I’ve succeeded and am now on a great track. Even with planning a wedding and moving back and forth between countries I’m feeling positive about the future financially, something I’ve never before felt.

I’m almost more passionate about helping people fix their finances than I am about healthy living. both are so important to me, but the money aspect is close to my heart as it’s something I’ve seen many people close to me struggle with. It’s something I’ve never talked about in depth on the blog before but I realized after going through this process of paying off my credit cards that it is important to share. Being in debt doesn’t make you a bad person. Being in debt is not the end of the world. Being in debt is scary and hard but you can come out of it and you can get help. If anyone ever needs help or wants to talk about these things, please know that I’m here to listen. Just send me a message.

It can take several years to fix the mistakes you’ve made in the past. If you are in debt it might feel like you can’t get out – but you can! It might take a while but it’s worth it.

-

It’s so interesting how similar being in debt and being overweight are and how similar the processes of fixing both are. I’m happy my life is on the right track all around!

At work I’ve been working on a website for a furniture company. Looking through all the cool standing and treadmill desks they now offer in addition to traditional furniture has made me really want a more active desk option. The full time job is awesome but sitting so much still drives me crazy. That’s a lot of time spent being sedentary every day.

Since I have more control over my desk situation at home I decided to make my own standing desk to test it out. I don’t have an actual desk at home so I decided to use my kitchen counter bar as a standing desk (totally got the idea from Anne).

My Standing Desk Setup

Here’s my setup:

Nice, right? I can stand there and easily blog and do anything I need to do on the computer.

It’s obviously a really classy, and very technical setup. I use a 2.5 lb weight to keep my Ethernet cable from escaping my laptop.

Whatever works, right? I might secretly refer to it as my ghetto standing desk. ;)

I’m loving it so far. I’ve been doing it for a few days and I really like standing for an hour or so each night while I blog and read other blogs. It’s a much better option than adding on more hours to my sedentary total for the day!

Plus when I’m at my standing desk I rarely stand still. I sway, I move my feet, I tap my legs, I fidget a lot more without even being aware of it. Burning calories while blogging? Yes please! And if I do ever get too tired I can always just pull up a bar stool or go sit down elsewhere.

(I totally debated whether or not to use these photos. I never dress up at home though, so it’s more authentic to look a hot mess. Win!)

My new ghetto standing desk is awesome. I’m pretty happy with how it’s working out so this will probably be a permanent change for me. I’m so glad I decided to do this and make a positive change that allows me to be healthy and still keep blogging.

Create Your Own Standing Desk

It’s pretty easy to create your own standing desk, even if it’s just plopping your laptop on a higher location like I did. There are lots of reasons why you might want to consider creating your own standing desk – especially if you spend a lot of hours on the computer like I do. Here’s some extra reading that might inspire you and help you figure out how to create your own standing desk setup.

This morning as I ate eggs I started to ponder how different my tastes and food preferences are now.

I’ve talked about how I used to be a picky eater before, and to be honest I still am really picky. My tendencies to eat the same way I did as a child is strong and would lead me to eat cereal, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and chips all day long. Vegetables? Bah.

But these days I eat a lot more fruits and vegetables. There aren’t many I dislike besides pickles.

I’ve even recently started eating mushrooms, one of the vegetables on my list of most hated foods. I also made peace with tomatoes after a long period of disliking them.

I even ate ham this week and liked it. Ham. Something I’ve refused to eat for many years. Go me!

Basically cooking for myself has been like trying to feed a small child while getting them to like vegetables – I’ve got so many preferences and weird quirks about what I will eat and what mentally disgusts me that it takes a lot of work to plan meals. But I’m moving toward overcoming most of those picky quirks. There are very few things left that I don’t like anymore and I’ll try almost anything now.

If you are a a picky eater who wants to change your habits to get healthier it is possible. It takes some work but it can happen if you are committed. Here’s a few of the steps I use and might work for you. (Also, helpful for getting kids to eat healthier!)

Tips for Picky Eaters on How To Eat Your Most Hated Foods

Start small. Try the new or hated food in small amounts. If you hate a food or are disgusted by it you aren’t going to want to eat huge amounts of it at first. But chances are you can eat a biteful or two in that first sitting. So only serve yourself that much! Don’t try to overdo it in the beginning.

Try eating it in an unhealthy way. Sometimes the easiest way to start eating a vegetable is to eat it prepared in a way that is unhealthy – breaded and/or fried. If you are aiming for healthy eating this might seem counterproductive but really it’s not. If you try a vegetable in this method and like it you start to knock down those mental barriers around the food. Eventually you can transition from eating the food fried to eating it in a more healthy way.

Add condiments and/or sauces. Sauces are generally delicious and can make almost any food better. If you are trying to learn to eat a food you hate try covering it in a sauce you love. Adding that taste of something you love will make it a lot easier to eat. I love ketchup so many of the vegetables I used to hate were first eaten by me with ketchup. It makes the transition easier.

Make it the best possible way. We often get turned off of foods because our parents prepared them in dreadful ways. Realize that you don’t have to cook it the same way and things can taste better! Find a highly rated and tested recipe for the ingredient on Epicurious, Food Network, or All Recipes, and use it. Make the food taste as good as it possibly can to give it a chance. If you cook something that has hundreds of positive reviews chances are you will end up liking it too. I used to think cauliflower was disgusting, but I learned that roasting cauliflower makes it taste delicious!

Mix it in. If you can’t stomach a food in it’s natural state then mix it in to other things! Eggplant, for example, might seem like a food you just can’t eat. So mix it into other things like pasta sauces and eggplant dips. You can mix foods into dishes so they are almost unrecognizable yet you are still eating them.

Give it one more try. I don’t know how many times I’ve told people I hated ham. But I gave it one more try this week and it turns out that it’s not bad if it’s prepared properly. Delicious, even. The same thing has happened with most vegetables I currently eat. If you have a food you’ve been avoiding for a long time give it another try. You might be surprised.

If you really hate it, let it go. If you’ve tried time and time again to eat something yet are thoroughly disgusted, then just let it go. You don’t have to eat it. There are plenty of healthy foods out there that you can eat and enjoy without forcing yourself to eat that particular item. Try, try again, and then move on. You can always reevaluate in a few years when your tastes change.

It’s possible to change from a completely unhealthy style of eating to a very healthy one, but it doesn’t happen overnight. Give yourself time to change and don’t feel bad about how long it takes. If you are really picky or you’ve been eating unhealthy (but yummy) foods for a long time you likely won’t change overnight if you want lasting change. Remind yourself that one small decision leads to bigger changes! Good luck!

Are you a picky eater? Have you changed how you eat before? How did you go about it?
