On Sunday we went to the Auckland Lantern Festival… our second time attending!

Our friends Darren & Tai took us to the festival but it ended up being so crowded we couldn’t move. I started to feel claustrophobic in the area with the food stalls because I kept getting bumped from every direction. We ended up leaving and they took us to Hulucat Tea House in Auckland.

I’ve never had milk tea before so it was an interesting experience. I tried chocolate milk tea with chocolate milk pudding in it… such a strange texture experience! You are drinking and then all the sudden you are eating… strange! Have you ever had it before? Can someone explain to me what “grass jelly” was on the menu?!?!?

Even better, the place is full of silly cat photos. Look at that one in the background of the photo. Hilarious!

Things are so much better living in New Zealand this time. Friends, festivals, drinks, fun! I’d just like to acknowledge that I’m really glad it’s better than last time when I was really struggling. Life isn’t perfect but it’s definitely better. :)

-

The festival was fun and all but I didn’t work out at all over the weekend which felt strange. I seem to have gotten used to the 6 day a week workout schedule and taking time off was hard mentally. But the rest was a smart idea.

My neck & hip issues are feeling much better today. Rest + stretching really was what I needed.

Since I’m repeating week 6 of LiveFit Trainer this week I also decided to drop the amount of weight I’m lifting and work more on form. Today’s workout was legs so I dropped the weight (squats with 88lbs instead of 154 lbs for example) and actually did much better. It was way easier so I had excellent form while going below parallel in squats.

Surprisingly even the lighter weights still felt like a great workout. I guess taking a couple days off can do that. ;)

Today was great but obviously these are things I’m going to have to keep working on.

The healthy living quest never ends!

This weekend we visited a new farmers market! We’ve been having rain on the weekends so we’ve cancelled several weekend market adventures but this Saturday we woke up to sunny(ish) skies and decided to go for it. I even dressed up for summer and wore a halter (which is normally a dress but I made into a shirt).

Yay for sunny summer days!

Well actually, it was sunny when we left but ended up raining on the way.

We got lucky when we arrived and had just enough time without rain to enjoy the market.

This weekend we went to Oratia Farmers Market in Oratia, Waitakere City, Auckland.

It’s another market that is open all year, rain or shine, every Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon.

From their website:

We are an authentic farmer market.

A farmers’ market is a produce market selling food produce and food products, fresh flowers, plants and compost. The products are sourced locally and sold by the producer. The aim is to provide a venue for local food producers to sell their product directly to the public.

Quality Food Produce and Products

Made and Grown Locally

Sold by the Producer

Sounds like exactly what a farmers market should be, right?

What I Liked About Oratia Farmers Market

Location. This is going to be confusing because location is on both the like and dislike lists. I liked the location because the farmers market is located at Artisan Wines. It’s at a vineyard! Though they have off road parking we ended up parking on the road and walking through the vineyard. That was fine by me because I love vineyards!

The signs. I liked all the chalkboard signs at this market. They had a big sign in the front when you first got there with some information about the live music, what was offered that day at the market and little details.

They also had hanging chalkboard signs for every stall which was really nice.

Atmosphere. I liked the general atmosphere and setup of the market. It felt a lot more like a farmers market I would find or attend in the US and I liked that it was setup strictly to be a farmers market.

Ginger beer. Kepa loves ginger beer (I don’t get it personally) and he really enjoyed the Lime & Chilli Ginger Beer he bought from the Hakanoa stall.

Live music. I’m always a fan of live music at events and at farmers markets. There were two girls playing at the farmers market when we went and they were enjoyable and added to the atmosphere a lot.

Food. Specifically home made goods from the lady running Jam Pak’d.

Kepa got a beef and mushroom pie that was amazing (I tried a bite):

And we shared a slice of toffee and macadamia nut cake that was so ridiculously amazing (my first time trying such a cake):

Overall there were a lot of things I liked about this market.

What I Didn’t Like About Oratia Farmers Market

Location. It’s super far away from us so we won’t be going back. But beyond that it’s just out of the way and felt like it took forever to get there even once we got to the right town.

No dogs allowed. Thought they had a place selling dog food and treats (and they had dogs) the market is not dog friendly. JuJu isn’t allowed to go which makes me sad.

Size. The market was pretty small which meant limited vendors.

Price. Prices weren’t that great for most stalls. It really bothered me that the Pic’s Peanut Butter guy wanted me to buy the peanut butter that was two dollars more than the price I buy it for at the super market. I want to review this peanut butter soon because I like it but I already pay $7 for a smallish jar and don’t want to pay more just to buy it at a market.

Lack of variety. There wasn’t much variety at the market because of it’s size so we walked around very quickly.

This ferret. I mean, I know the taxidermy was for the people who love the environment and want to save the animals (or something I was too grossed out to ask) but this stuff ferret totally creeped me out.

The Confederate Flag. I was born and raised in the South but I really don’t consider the Confederate flag to be a positive part of our history. Plus I thought moving to New Zealand would mean I wouldn’t see it anymore? Yet there it is flying at the back of the building (hard to see, sorry).

Thoughts About Oratia Farmers Market

Overall I liked the market. I liked the live music and the general feeling. I wished it was bigger and had more variety but that’s what you get with small markets sometimes.

I have to point out that thought I liked the market Kepa didn’t. He liked the ginger beer and the food we got but overall his review wasn’t as positive as mine. But since this is my blog you get to hear my opinions for the most part. :) Let’s just call the review of Oratia Farmers Market a mixed one. I’m happy we had some yummy food and I got to buy some asparagus and blueberries though!

We won’t be going back since it wasn’t spectacular enough to justify the trip from our location but if you live nearby or happen to be in the area it’s worth at least a visit. I definitely like the location at the winery and think anyone interested in New Zealand wines might enjoy it.

Other markets we have visited:

Hope you all have a lovely weekend! If you are in New Zealand, go enjoy the nicer weather!

You guys. My legs are so sore! I am feeling yesterday’s leg workout today in a major way.

Today I worked back and biceps which was awesome. I love the LiveFit program so far. It’s kicking my butt and hitting muscles hard that I haven’t worked enough. LOVE IT.

-

Kepa and I have been going on lots of walks lately and it’s something we are trying to do more often just for free fun activities and because walking is great for your health. It’s going to be a lot easier once we can take JuJu along so I can’t wait for that.

I have to say walks are also my favorite way to explore my new city of Auckland.

Steep & windy are currently my two favorite words to describe Auckland. This is because it seems all the streets and trails and things are crazy steep and it is windy to very windy quite often. If it doesn’t feel like you are climbing a mountain than it’s at least a rolling hill.

A couple weeks ago we went on a walk at a park a few minutes from where we live on a sunny, windy day.

It was a lovely walk through a park… with cows. It seems there are always either cows or sheep hanging around.

We walked around for a while and then walked up to the lookout point… another thing common in the parks here!

Most of the walk was relatively flat since we were already high up, but that last bit was so steep!

The views were worth it though as we could see really far into the distance. Any time I can see the ocean from a high point I get excited.

Once we got to the top we realized the somewhat windy day was actually REALLY WINDY.

We almost blew away into the countryside.

There are so many lovely walks and trails around Auckland that I want to explore. Hopefully we have a string of nice days without rain so we can get out there and check out a few this summer!

Today turned out to be a pretty cool day!

After work I went out to grab coffee with Lindsay (she is awesome, check out her blog Cotter Crunch) and her husband James. Kepa and I met them at Coffee Club and chatted for a bit. They are here in New Zealand for a couple months until James competes in Ironman New Zealand. Yep, he is a professional triathlete which is pretty freaking cool. I think he is the first pro athlete I’ve ever met?

Anyway, during the discussion we all had we talked a lot about food and about things we missed eating when we were in the other country. They asked what I missed from the US living here in New Zealand.

At the time I honestly couldn’t think of much. My answers then were Chick Fil A and barbecue. I miss those things but honestly I never ate them that often when I was at home (maybe once every few months with the exception of wedding week).

After we parted ways I went to the gym and all I could think about during my workout were foods and things I missed from America! Here are some of the things I thought about during my workout that are things I miss from the USA while living in New Zealand:

Food & food related things I miss:

Good chicken fajitas

More variety of delicious Mexican food

Ethiopian food

Luna Bars

Clif Protein Bars

Sweet tea (Southern style! A very occasional treat I will miss)

Whole Foods & the hot foods buffet

Kroger

Hot wings & Buffalo Wild Wings (very rare but awesome)

Hueys in Memphis

IHOP (oddly ate there rather frequently)

Blue Moon beer

Egg whites sold by themselves

Cheap and easy to find almond milk

I guess it was hard to think of things because everything I miss is stuff I only had occasionally back in the states anyway! In general I eat pretty similar whether I’m there or here!

Other things I miss:

Free wifi almost everywhere or at least easy to find

Dryer for drying clothes

Automatic ice maker in fridge

Heating and air conditioning (sometimes fans and space heaters don’t cut it)

Actually having four distinct seasons

Polite people with good manners & who say ma’am and sir

Football season in the fall

Lots of TV shows + channels

Costco and other bulk stores

People! And easily being able to talk to them without crazy scheduling

Some of those things are just based on my living situation rather than all of New Zealand, but they are things I miss from my life in the US and currently don’t have!

This was actually fun to think about rather than sad. I think I’ve grown up a lot since the last time I lived in New Zealand and am content to live here for however long. It’s a pretty great place even if I don’t have everything I want all the time. ;)

What’s something you would miss from your home town if you moved abroad?

Four days before Christmas it FINALLY feels like the holiday season to me.

That might be because today I had a brandy snap for the first time and it tasted like Christmas. (Oops, sugar! Why are Christmas & sugary things so interrelated?)

It probably is because I finally went Christmas shopping today and got Kepa a stocking stuffer gift. (Still need to get a bigger gift.)

It is definitely because I finally got my NZ Secret Santa gift in the mail!

NZ Secret Santa is a little $10 gift exchange among people living in New Zealand on twitter. Everyone enters and gets a name then sends a gift and watches the gifts roll in under the #nzsecretsanta hashtag on Twitter. Since I’m not working in an office anymore it is the perfect way to still participate in a fun secret santa.

Last year for NZ Secret Santa I got a gift that was not useful or fun for me. This year however, the gift was perfect! It totally made me smile and I am planning to use everything they sent.

I got a big American flag and some Queen of Everything bunting. JuJu liked it too! :)

It’s funny I got this gift because hours earlier I was in a store telling Kepa I needed to buy a big American flag. Then we shopped for a while and I came home to open a surprise present that contained a big American flag! You can’t even imagine how awesome that was… I actually asked Kepa if he was secretly behind the gift but he reminded me that we hadn’t been apart since I first mentioned getting a flag so I was being crazy. I guess my Secret Santa just read my mind anyway?

I also love the Queen of Fucking Everything bunting. I’m a huge fan of bunting and being awesome so a gift that combines the two is a major win. I plan to hang it in my home office once I get it situated.

Obviously getting my secret santa gift totally made my day and got me into the Christmas spirit.

I’m so excited for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day now! Yay!

Do you participate in any Secret Santa gift exchanges? What’s the best gift you’ve ever gotten from a secret santa?

Despite the cloudy, rainy day Kepa and I headed out to the Clevedon Village Farmers Market.

I was excited about going to this market because I had heard great things about it. Also, we tried to go last weekend but got confused on which day it was. We went on Saturday but the market is actually only on Sunday mornings!

From their website:

Leave the rush and bustle of the week behind and join the friendly atmosphere of the Clevedon Village Farmers Market on Sunday mornings.

Be tempted by the seasonal offerings of fruit and vegetables picked as recently as the night before if not early on market morning. Make the most of the opportunity to sample and hand pick the best provisions, be inspired by cooking tips and recipes from the stallholders.

For the most bountiful display shoppers need to rise early as trading is brisk and some produce lines are gone by mid morning. Inspiration for early birds can be found in the fresh baking, pastries and espresso available at the market.

Because of the rain and the tiredness from a party last night we got a late start, but the market was still great!

What I Liked About Clevedon Village Farmers Market

I really liked the Clevedon market for a lot of reasons.

It’s on Sunday! This is nice because it’s a fun thing we can do on Sundays which are pretty casual days for us.

Everyone was super friendly! The vendors were so friendly and willing to chat about things.

I met the owners of Clevedon Herbs & Produce. These guys are great! We chatted for a while and they gave me tips on how not to kill a cilantro plant immediately like I have the tendency to do (I probably will still end up killing it). Also awesome – they sell a whole herb plant for $2.50 which is cheaper than buying a tiny packet of “fresh” herbs at the supermarket. Major deal right there! I also love that they only do farmers’ markets now instead of selling straight to supermarkets.

Since we were late we missed out on the kale from Clevedon Herbs & Produce but I got incredibly lucky and Dullumbunda Farm had bags of red russian kale and curly kale! I bought a bag of kale for $3. I also liked their handwritten sign explaining kale and why it is good for you.

I also bought white asparagus! I’ve never even seen white asparagus before so I had to buy it to test it out. The nice guy who sold it to me told me it was white because they grew it inside. Interesting, right? I’ll let you know if it tastes like regular asparagus.

Discovering Oh Fudge! The fudge we sampled was amazing and for $5 it makes a great Christmas gift. I love the super cute packaging.

Kumara bread! We bought a tiny thing of this and the Pukeke Bakery guy gave us an extra one just because. Did I mention everyone at the market is really nice?

This farmers’ markets was a great size! It’s bigger than the Britomart market and has more variety. It’s also set up well so there is lots of open space so everyone doesn’t get crowded and run into each other constantly.

Lots of samples of amazing stuff. I seriously wanted to buy almost everything I tried but I try not to go spend crazy at the markets. Next time I will buy a few different things I tried like Buffalo yogurt and Tuscan salmon. Delicious y’all.

What I Didn’t Like About Clevedon Village Farmers Market

This list is pretty short. Things I didn’t like about the market:

Rain. But hey, that wasn’t even the markets fault! Plus, all the stalls were covered so you could stay out of the rain for the most part.

Location. It’s not as close to us as other markets because it’s farther out into the country. That’s good for the amount of produce and farmers there but it’s a pretty long drive.

Parsley mayonnaise. It’s the one thing I tried that I didn’t like.

Thoughts About Clevedon Village Farmers Market

Overall I really liked the Clevedon Village Farmers Market! We had a really fun hour or so wandering around and checking out all the different options available. We came away with some sweets and yummy fresh produce which means it was a successful trip! I saw a lot of the same vendors that were at the Howick market which was nice because I liked that market too.

I honestly can’t wait to go back the next time. I’m hoping that the next time we go we will have a sunny day. :) If you are in Auckland it’s definitely worth a visit on a Sunday morning!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends! I hope you celebrated with friends and family and are ending the day in a happy state.

We had our own little healthy thanksgiving yesterday. Besides consuming a bit too much protein pumpkin pie we did pretty well. It was nice to celebrate with just the two of us, though I’m looking forward to bigger celebrations in our future.

Unfortunately I caught a cold this week so I’m resting today and not going to the gym. It makes me sad but instead of dwelling on it I’m celebrating the fact that I’ve been very active lately and I even have a new walking buddy!

I met up with Natasha this week after chatting with her on Twitter for a while. We went for a walk at the Auckland Botanic Gardens.

It was my first visit to the Botanic Gardens here and I was pleasantly surprised. Entry is free and the grounds are massive with lots of walking trails. It was insanely pretty and covered a lot of different types of plants. I enjoyed our walk as we got to know each other better.

I loved the edible garden area. I think that’s important to have to teach kids about growing food since a lot of kids now seem to think food only comes in packages from stores or restaurants!

The rose garden might have been my favorite area. You can smell it before you see it thanks to winds that carry the fragrance.

I literally stopped to smell the roses there. I used to grow roses when I was in high school and miss having blooms nearby to smell and admire.

In addition to wonderful flowers and nature the park was filled with sculpture available for purchase. Unfortunately it was out of our price range.

Wouldn’t you like to purchase Bird Lady for $18,000?

Or perhaps the bear wearing a hoodie?

I thought so.

We walked around for about an hour looking at the various sections of the gardens and the sculptures on display. It was a really enjoyable walk and I’m happy to say that I have a new walking/hiking buddy here. We even have our next walk scheduled in December and I can’t wait to explore a new beautiful spot here in New Zealand!

Now that I know the Botanic Gardens is free and has a ton of different walking paths I will definitely be going back. I can’t wait to go on a walk there with Kepa. It’s a wonderful place to walk and get in some exercise that doesn’t even feel like exercise because the scenery is so beautiful. It’s perfect!

Do you visit botanic gardens? Check your local botanic gardens out because you might be missing something awesome!
