The day before my birthday we headed to Rangitoto Island to conquer a fitness goal off my list. You know, because climbing up a nice little dormant volcano is a great fitness goal!

Rangitoto emerged from the sea 700 years ago and today is recreation reserve. The island is well protected and there is no construction or anything fancy there. There are 10 short and long walks on the island. You could do all of them but we planned to do just a few.

We took the ferry across from Auckland on what was a lovely day.

It was sunny and just warm enough when we started. Kepa and I both had packs with some food and clothes to change into later. There are no shops on the island so you have to bring enough food and water to last your trip. My awesome “hiking” clothes for the day:

When we got to the island there were way more people there than I thought. It was the last Saturday of school holidays here so lots of people were out enjoying the nice day.

The summit hike started at the wharf where the ferries drop people off and goes all the way to the top of the mountain you can see in the background. The majority of the trail is rocks/gravel surrounded by lots of lava rock and tons of trees, shrubs, and wildlife.

Apparently the summit trail and most of the roads on the island were built in the 1920s and 1930s by prison laborers! They’ve made improvements and updates since obviously since Kepa informed me of new areas since his last visit 13 years ago.

I had a slight obsession with the lava rocks and kept taking photos because I thought it was so cool. Believe me, I’m showing you only a few of the photos I took! I found it so interesting to see where the rocks were and imagining the last eruption involving lava flowing. Volcanoes and lava are terrifying but luckily these days we get advance warning of eruptions!

The walk wasn’t too hard going up for about 3/4 of the way. There was a lot to look at including some areas with information about the island built as a resting spot with seating in several places along the way.

I found these leaves with such an interesting shape… there were tons of them growing from the ground!

About 3/4 of the way up we took a little detour to loop around a trail to see the lava caves. This trail was more woodsy and had rocks in the middle of the trail instead of being a flatter surface created with gravel/rocks. It was also less steep than the summit trail so that was a nice break as well as a change of scenery.

The caves themselves were a bit spooky but fun to explore.

We didn’t know we needed a flashlight for the caves (so we weren’t 100% prepared!) but still decided to go through at least one. Luckily between some natural light, phones, and the camera we made it in and out without breaking any ankles or getting stuck.

After the lava caves detour we climbed the rest of the summit trail. And climbed is accurate. There were stairs, a steep incline for several minutes, and then more stairs. We stopped to take a photo at the crater, which is where the volcano erupted/would erupt.

Then after a two minute walk up the stairs we reached the summit!

Gorgeous views, right?

You could see SO FAR from the top. It’s definitely the best view I’ve had so far in Auckland, even better than the skytower.

Another self portrait at the top. By that point I was getting quite pink from the sun despite my sunblock and hat.

The walk to the top only takes an hour or so at an easy pace. I think we did the first part much faster than that and then the final part on that pace when it was steeper. It’s pretty accessible for almost any fitness level even beginners and kids. If you are in Auckland at some point (or live here and haven’t gone) you should definitely consider it!

After a few minutes up top enjoying the view we hiked around the crater rim and then down a new path. We stopped for lunch which was just a sandwich and chips and an apple – it reminded me of my lunches from school.

We enjoyed a nice shady view while eating.

Then we packed up and carried on!

Our next stretch of the hike involved a “road” that was gravel and lots of rocks leading down the back part of the mountain.

It said this walk would take 45 minutes and it probably did but it felt like it took forever! I guess because the scenery didn’t change much from the above photo and we were constantly looking down anyway to avoid rocks it felt a bit long and drawn out.

At the end of the road there was a cute surprise: a lighthouse!

I love lighthouses and didn’t even know there were any around here. It was nice to see this one at the end of the road at McKenzie Bay.

By the time we reached this beach at McKenzie Bay we were tired. We were a bit sunburnt and had hiked around 5 miles at that point. We actually spent a few minutes at the beach happily resting then realized if we left and booked it back to the wharf we could catch an earlier ferry.

That sounded like a great idea since we were already tired. There is nothing on the island beyond trails and a few historical bach houses (private summer home type of deal) so we didn’t want to get stuck on the island for more than an hour with nothing to do.

The last part of our walk was along the coastal road. It started off with these amazing trees.

And ended with a bunch of old houses and abandoned boat houses built in the 1920s and 1930s. Apparently people used to live on Rangitoto at the beginning of the last century but since 1937 no one has been allowed to build on the island.

The trail ended in the bach community. By the time we saw them and knew we were close we were slightly delirious from the hike. It was our longest and steepest so far, totaling 8 miles over almost 3 hours of walking. At the end we were tired and my feet were done. I definitely need better shoes than the old running shoes that are worn thin in the soles… they didn’t hold up well for that distance!

Needless to say, the appearance of the ferry at the end of our walk made us ecstatic.

Despite being incredibly tired by the end we were so happy we went to Rangitoto and explored it. It was a super fun day of hiking and hanging out in a gorgeous nature setting – the perfect way to celebrate my 26th birthday. And now I can cross this off my fitness goals and move on to the next one!

Today I’ve been wrapped up in working on my future visa application for NZ. I don’t plan on applying until August or so but I figured I would work on it a little bit at a time when I had free time. I have to say, it’s so complicated! So many things to gather for proof of our relationship. There will also be a ton of writing involved to explain things so I’m glad I’ve started now!

The most fun part by far is going through photos to “prove” our relationship.

So many happy memories!

We’ve packed a lot of great stuff into the last couple of years. :)

One thing that has stressed me out about the application process beyond just gathering enough proof about our relationship (still a ton of work to do for this!) is the fact that I’m currently over the BMI limit that they generally accept. Since New Zealand has publicly funded healthcare they take into consideration future healthcare costs for all immigrants. From what I’ve read a bmi over 35 will require more tests and sometimes gets a rejection of the application because they believe the person will end up costing the healthcare system over $25,000 in the long run.

This obviously makes sense and for a small country like New Zealand is something they need to keep in check to make things work. Learning this stressed me out because I’m currently still over a BMI of 35! Part of me wants to whine that it isn’t fair to use BMI and just say give me a visa already! But I’m a grown up and logical and realize that this one is on me and me alone, even if I do think BMI is a bit flawed.

Luckily I’m closer than I was to this goal. I need to get down to 190 or preferably lower to avoid most of the hassles with extra medical tests (or possible rejection) for my future visa application. I’m about 11 pounds away since I seem to have stalled around 201 after finishing LiveFit. My gym membership actually expired this week and I’m not renewing it until I come back to NZ in July. This means I need to kick it into high gear… without a gym.

So that’s where I stand in the whole living permanently in New Zealand situation. I’ve got to gather up a whole bunch of evidence, write several super long essays of explanation, get friends to write letters about us, save up over a thousand dollars for fees, and lose at least 11+ pounds. Sooner rather than later. Or by August to be exact.

Oh the things I do for love.

Since I finished the LiveFit workouts I haven’t been in the gym.

I haven’t wanted to be! I needed a break for a few days at least and I found the perfect activity to replace those hours spent in the gym: hiking! Lucky for me JuJu and Kepa also were into the idea.

Easter weekend we went to Totara Park together for the first time for a longer hike. We just ambled about for an hour or so that day and mostly let JuJu run around us in the off leash areas. It was so nice to be out walking and enjoying nature that we decided to go back the next day for an even longer walk.

We are both on Fitocracy (post on this coming soon) and decided to make our second hike long enough to complete a Fitocracy quest. That meant we had to make sure we went 5 miles while carrying a pack, 25 lbs for Kepa and 10 lbs for me. We had our goal in mind so we set off in the park with little JuJu in tow!

The park is lovely. I went there before with Rachel and Lily but this is the first time I’ve gone all over the park and checked out the majority of the trails. Instead of sticking to the flat areas we went into the forest parts and climbed up and over the hills. The prettiest trail runs along a stream and also involves a lot of climbing vertically with plenty of stairs built into the trail. Parts of it felt like a decent challenge and my heart rate jumped itself up after climbing to the top (on average though it stayed around 140).

JuJu did great despite my worries that 5 miles was pretty far for her. She has almost endless amounts of energy so she only started to tire out toward the end. We did take a break midway for her to rest and for us to eat lunch, since picnics are the best!

Our hike ended with an easy stroll through the Botanic Gardens. Since we had to make sure we went the full five miles and the park and gardens are connected we decided an easy end looking at pretty flowers would be nice. Okay, I totally decided that part but they went with it.

Here are the stats for the hike which we ended up breaking into two sections with a break for food/water/JuJu rest.

After five miles I was tired but so happy. Some sun and time outside did great things to my mind and though I was tired I felt that lovely post exercise feeling of contentment. I definitely think we will be hiking more in the future since a couple of my fitness goals involve hiking (Rangitoto Island and Tongariro Crossing here in NZ). Plus it’s just really fun to exercise in nature.

As far as what I’ll be doing next I’m not 100% set on that. I definitely want to get back in the gym and lift but I might not be able to for a couple months. Things are a bit up in the air. We will see but no matter what I will keep active!

Last Saturday we went ice skating!

I haven’t been in a few years so I thought I might break my neck but I got up to speed pretty quickly. I only fell twice and though my knee ended up badly bruised from one fall I felt it went well.

I’ve loved spending the last couple of weeks doing new fun active things with Kepa. This time we went with a few friends and now we are all looking forward to more adventures (especially a snowboarding trip this year).

Finding a bunch of cool daily deals that allow us to try different things at half price has been awesome. GrabOne has been my best friend lately giving us ideas for fun things to do at half price. I love doing these kinds of activities that are both fun and active. It’s made being in New Zealand a lot more fun to be honest.

Ice skating for over an hour was a pretty great workout that didn’t even feel like work because it was fuuuuun! It isn’t something I do often so it was a nice switch from normal cardio activities.

On a different note…

While I love blogging, I’ve noticed I really needed/need a break. I haven’t felt like blogging yet this week and last week felt forced. That’s a sign that I need a blog break at least from this blog and all the stuff that goes with it in my head. I’m doing well with the fitness and food and finally actually lost weight… but I still need a break from posting so often and thinking about the blog.

I’m probably going to keep a slow/whenever-I-feel-like-it posting schedule for a while. There is a lot going on right now that makes me think I just needed to slow things here for a minute and focus on other things. And you know… just be me. Mary without the blog. So yeah. It was a good break and the forward blogging plan feels good.

Love you guys. Keep chasing your healthy and happy lives. Go ice skating or do something fun! <3

This past weekend was one of my favorites so far in New Zealand. We went to see The Hunger Games (enjoyed the movie but the book is obviously better) and we went SNOWBOARDING!

If you haven’t figured it out yet I love snowboarding. I’m not the best at it. I’m not fast. I’m not good at tricks. But I just love the act of snowboarding down a mountain – or a fake mountain as it were.

We went to Snowplanet on Saturday for several hours of snowboarding fun. We are planning a trip to an actual mountain in a few months once winter rolls in so I wanted Kepa to get a chance to learn a bit of the basics before hitting an actual mountain. Plus it was a good chance for me to refresh since it’s been a few years since I went snowboarding.

Snowplanet is a nice indoor snow facility that has a slope with a couple different options and a beginners area. We started off on the bunny hill to let Kepa get the hang of gliding and stopping. After an hour an a half of that we graduated to the bigger area and he worked from halfway up while I went to the top. He gained confidence and skillsquickly (I was so proud!) and he eventually joined me at the top.

I loved almost everything about Snowplanet from the easy slope to the music they played but I hated the lifts. They are the kind you have to hold on to while it pulls you up. I tried using my arms but that didn’t workout so I ended up using both my legs and arms which tired me out! I probably could have gone 6 more hours at Snowplanet if the lift they use wasn’t so tiring to me. I much prefer chair lifts at actual mountains.

Regardless I had a blast! Kepa even videotaped one of my runs down:

We didn’t realize the camera was getting foggy. ;)

Like I said, I’m not super fast or good it’s just something I enjoy. I’m not aiming to be the best either. I’ve gone a few times over the years and just really enjoy the sport.

It’s a fun (and sadly expensive) hobby that I don’t get to indulge in nearly enough. Maybe now that I live a lot closer to both an indoor facility and an actual mountain I’ll get to go more often.

Fingers crossed!

I wrote this post about recent weekend things and tried to make them all collect into one coherent post but failed. Sometimes I fail majorly at being a blogger but I still like sharing my life with you guys.

Puppy Family

Guess who I saw this weekend?

JuJu’s brother!

He lives with the brother of a friend of ours. We were at their house for a birthday party over the weekend so I got to say hi and play with him. I haven’t seen him since he was around 6 weeks old so it was fun to see him again.

I also learned he is much smaller than JuJu!

JuJu is a beast! A sock collecting beast!

She likes socks and will scavenge the place for any she can get her hands on. She doesn’t chew them up but just carries them around for a while or builds up a collection until I take it away. Silly dog.

Party Food

So the birthday party this weekend was fantastic. I always love a party that features good food and this one had plenty. My favorites were the chicken wings (possibly the best ever breading) and bbq pork and shrimp fried rice.

YUM.

I learned this weekend that though I love eating meat I can’t eat anything if I watch it die in front of me. Even mussels.

At the party they grilled these and I just could not stand it. I think the whole idea of them suffocating to death just freaked me out and I couldn’t try them after watching it. I’d probably be an awful hunter.

Do any of you like eating mussels? Or other animals/seafood you watch meet their end?

Circuit Training

Over the weekend I didn’t do much that was active other than a good amount of light walking places. I admit I spent most of the weekend reading and even finished the last hunger games book, Mockingjay. So after that I started this week feeling refreshed and I’ve completed two days of this week’s training so far. Circuits are so hard and awesome! I swear I’m sweating like crazy and so tired by the end. I like circuits and will probably end up doing similar types of workouts a few times a week (instead of 6) with some other cardio for the next few months.

How was your weekend? Any big plans for this week?

I’m recovering from a crazy busy weekend with… a crazy busy workday. I don’t even know if I’ll have time today to get to the gym. *sigh* If that’s the case at least I have a walk with JuJu to look forward to tonight!

I’m busy and feel so behind on everything, but I still wanted to blog about my weekend though so here’s a quick rundown of everything that happened.

Friday:

Friday night I went to my first Rugby game here in New Zealand. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I knew it would be a fun time when we got there and the entrance was packed with fans trying to get in.

After a bit of a planning snafu we entered the stadium a bit late and settled in to enjoy the game.

The game itself was fun to watch. I understand the rugby basics even if I don’t know all the rules (it’s even harder because there are different versions of rugby with slightly different rules).

The crowd was interesting and had a good atmosphere. We sat near some very loud mostly drunk guys who screamed the entire time. There was also a tiny “Blue Army” at one end of the field that reminded me a bit of a college football or basketball game. It felt like a cross between a college and pro event but overall was really fun.

I am now apparently a fan of the Auckland Blues. ;) I doubt that this will be my last rugby game.

Saturday:

Saturday morning started with a workout. I had to do a back workout that was really fun.

Later that afternoon we took JuJu for her first off leash walk! It was one of her first walks ever actually but we took her to a park where dogs can also walk off leash. She loved it! She did so well and stayed close to us the whole time. She is great at coming when I call come (yet seems to forget sit when there are distractions – ha!). We met two dogs including a German Shepherd that scared my little JuJu to death but she eventually warmed up to. However she never got used to cows – they are still her #1 enemy.

Saturday evening we went around to a friend’s house to drink mojitos and watch another rugby game.

(source)

Our friend is trying to perfect the process of making several different drinks and decided we would be useful guinea pigs. I only had a few sips but they were quite good!

Sunday:

Sunday I met a new friend who lives in Auckland. Rachel and I met at a local park that has off-leash areas for dogs and JuJu got to experience her first walk with another dog.

(source)

I was worried she wouldn’t know what to do since Lily (Rachel’s dog) was only the third dog JuJu has met since she has been with us. She didn’t have much experience with walks or with other dogs so I went in feeling a bit nervous. There was some anxiety on JuJu’s part but after a bit of sniffing and a few strange noises she and Lily got along just fine. They walked on and off leash together well. JuJu is a huge fan of running around off leash with another dog!

We were at the park for about an hour. It was great to meet someone new here and give JuJu a fun experience at the same time. I didn’t take any photos while we were there because I was so focused on making sure JuJu behaved… oops!

Sunday afternoon was full of relaxation and rest which was desperately needed. It set me up to start the week off well even if it has quickly gone the wrong way and I’m feeling stressed. I guess that happens sometimes!

How was your weekend?
