Black Bean Burgers and Larabars

by Mary

Remember how I said I was eating raisin bran for breakfast? Well, yeah, actually it’s called Sultana Bran.

sultana bran

No clue why, but Kellogg’s calls it Sultana Bran over here instead of Raisin Bran. Basically the same thing just a different name. I had a bowl for breakfast with skim milk.

For lunch I made a black bean and red pepper burger.

I ate the burger with some leftover potato wedges from last nights dinner.

Ketchup on top of it all but I didn’t take a photo of that. I didn’t make it an actual burger because it was already so carbilicious.

Black bean burgers are so easy to make! Just mash up some black beans with a tablespoon of flour and seasonings. I like to add red pepper too and I think corn would be awesome as well. Next time. ;)

For a snack I had a small granny smith apple.

For dinner we had crumbed fish in pita pockets with lettuce, tomato, mong bean sprouts, and tartar sauce.

These are really very delicious and I see why Kepa has them in his weekly meals. They are one of my new favorite things to eat as well.

We went to a coffee shop after dinner to discuss WordPress for a school website Kepa is working on. I didn’t want to get a tea, I don’t drink coffee, and hot chocolate was too sugary so I ended up getting just water.  Mmm, water.

After that we stopped by the grocery store to pick up a few things. I checked out the “natural” section with all the organic foods and saw Larabars! We got the chocolate and chocolate cherry flavors to split because those were the only kinds available.

larabars

I had mine with a glass of skim milk.

I’m not a huge fan of these flavors. They weren’t very good at all in my opinion. I guess if I’m going to have something that’s chocolate I want it to be real good chocolate instead of whatever this was. Chocolate flavor, you disappoint me.

Didn’t go to the gym today. I didn’t want to overdo it since I’m still coughing up a storm over here. I did dance around the house the house a bit and stretched everything I could stretch. OMG it felt soooooooo good to stretch everything. I haven’t done any stretching since I was on the plane over here (I always stretch a lot on long plane rides since it’s a good excuse to get up) because when I was sick I basically did nothing but lay around. It was so nice and I considered it a treat because it made me feel so good afterwards. Hurray stretching, welcome back to my life.

Do you eat bean burgers? What kind of beans do you use?

What’s your favorite stretch?

I do and I don’t eat bean burgers. Some beans just don’t really settle with me so I just skip them if I am unsure.
Larabars disappoint me overall, but that is because I am expecting a twix bar. I am clearly confused.

I think that’s why I am disappointed by them too. I am always expecting something that isn’t what a Larabar is.

I like black bean burgers, but I really don’t eat them very often.

Too bad about the Jocolat bars. I haven’t tried them.

Only bean burgers for me. I prefer to make my own and like you said, it’s so easy. But then I get lazy and buy them in the organic foods section of the freezer aisle.

I wish I had a favorite stretch. Unfortunately, I don’t like stretching – shame on me.

I love reading about the different foods they have there..this is why its called sultana bran: (from wikki)
The sultana (also called the sultanina) is a type of white, seedless grape of Turkish, Greek, South African or Iranian origin. In some countries, especially Commonwealth countries, it is also the name given to the raisin made from it; such sultana raisins are often called simply sultanas or sultanis

Wow that does sound easy! Maybe ill try making a burger sometime.. Sometimes I eat veggie burgers but not often because they are usually pretty fried tasting out at restaurants, and the frozen kind are SO SMALL that you have to eat three or more just to even feel a little full. I am bad at stretching…but I guess I do it a lot lately because my whole body is so tight it hurts, so I have to stretch to get out of bed lol. Im so old now. I love the stretch parts of my exercise classes. And yoga is good for stretch too.

I’ve never made bean burgers but they look great. might have to try them one day!

I’m going to have a closer look at my organic section of my supermarket for larabars, i havent seen them but my fingers are crossed!

That is because we Aussies and Kiwis call them “sultanas” :) :)

You guys are crazy! I’m not used to the different names for everything yet. ;)

Do you rinse the beans before you mash them? My one try at bean burgers were an abysmal failure! =(

Glad you are on the mend, though!!

I don’t. I drain them but there is still a little bit of moisture left with them. I find it mixes well with the flour to make them gooey enough to stay together when you cook them. It’s no fun when you make bean burgers and they just crumble apart!

As far as I can tell, sultanas are to commonwealth countries what golden raisins are to americans.
And American raisins are only half the size they are in Aus.

Am still experimenting with Bean burgers, hard to get a CONSISTENTLY GOOD RECIPE. (OOPS KIDDO PRESSED THE CAPSLOCK BUTTON. lol)

Mary September 2, 2010 at 8:50 AM

I actually have found that this despite being simple is consistently good. It stays together and depending on how I season it and what I add it’s quite delicious! I do want to experiment more though and might do that soon. :)

carbilicious is my favorite new word – thanks.

Mary September 2, 2010 at 8:49 AM

No problem. :D

I’m not a big fan of the Jocolat Larabars either. But I love the ‘normal’ ones! Cherry Pie, Coconut Cream Pie and Chocolate Coconut Chew are some of my favorites.

They’re very easy to make yourself though–dates, nuts, & dried fruit in a food processor is about it!
