I made my own tortillas! And since I’ve got a few minutes before the enchiladas are done, I figured I would throw some pictures up.
Most recipes I found called for shortening/Crisco, which I didn’t have, so I found a better alternative recipe that was on several different sites, then followed the cooking instructions from this site.
Ingredients:
3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 cup warm water
Directions:
Mix the flour, salt, and vegetable oil together in a large bowl and mix it until it’s crumbly. Then add water and mix it up until it forms dough you can gather into a ball. Knead the dough until it’s smooth and no longer sticky (takes a few minutes).
Cover the dough with plastic wrap and set it aside for 10 to 15 minutes or more if you want.
Divide the dough into small sections, pulling off a couple inches worth at a time and rolling it into a small ball.
Let them sit again for 5 minutes.
On a lightly floured area, roll the balls into a 8 in circle. This was the hardest part for me, since I’m terrible at rolling, but you will probably be better.
Heat a heavy skillet (or griddle or comal … which I don’t have) over high heat. Place the tortilla in the pan and cook for about 30 seconds or until you see it puffing up. It should be slightly puffed and have brown spots when you then flip it and cook the other side for 30 seconds. I cooked one then rolled one and repeated the process that way, but you can do it however is best for you.
They come out looking like this:
Making your own tortillas is actually super easy. For my first time I think I did a great job. I’ve already tried one and it tasted delicious! I think I might make my own from now on, even though it requires a little more work.
