Kiwi Eats: Genghis Khan (Mongolian BBQ)

by Mary

Tonight we went out with Kepa’s friends to Genghis Khan in Manukau, a restaurant that does Mongolian BBQ. We were meeting up to discuss wedding details since all the guys are traveling over to the US in October. I was super excited that they chose to eat there because it’s a place I had been wanting to try.

Genghis Khan is a buffet type of restaurant where you pay 20ish dollars and eat as much as you want. You start off by choosing your meats from the selection of marinated and plain meats. I chose chicken for mine both times, but I did try a bit of Kepa’s other choices.

After you’ve chosen meats you choose your vegetables and noodles. I stuck with just vegetables and piled them high. I picked carrots, onions, potato slices, mung bean sprouts, and broccoli.

Next you choose a ladle (or two as they recommend) of sauce. I chose soy and honey sauce. Then a ladle of oil (although I didn’t use a full ladle then realized they add oil anyway so you could probably skip it). Then add any spices you want. I added red chili flakes and hot chilli sauce.

Once you have everything in your bowl you hand it over to the cooks who cook it in front of you while you wait in line. It takes a few minutes and then you get handed back a plate with your food on it.

The first plate was just so good I had to get another full of veggies and chicken (less chicken the second time). The combination of the sweeter sauce with the spicer add-ons left me with a dish that was sweet and spicy at the same time. I think it’s my new favorite way to eat chicken and vegetables because THIS WAS SO GOOD.

Everyone else tried all the other stuff like bread and fries but I was super, super happy with my chicken and veggie creation. I love how you can choose whatever you want and create anything your little heart desires since there are tons of options. A lot of the guys got bowls full of just meat and sauce, so my dinner was actually one of the healthier ones. Yay veggies!

They had interesting dessert options: pancakes and ice cream. So I tried the weird combination of them along with sprinkles and chocolate. It was a pancake sundae!

I have to say, I’m not a huge fan. I’d rather eat pancakes my normal way. I did enjoy the ice cream though. But I’ll stick to the BBQ part of the meal next time.

All in all I had a really great time. I loved my food (minus the dessert) and I can’t wait to eat there again one day. I guess I’ll add Mongolian BBQ to my list of likes. ;)

Have you ever had Mongolian BBQ?

We have these in the states too — there’s one in H’ville where my parents live. I went to a non-chain one in North Carolina one time, though, and it was about 100 times more fantastic than the chain version. I love fresh stir fry veggies!

Yeah, I know they are in the states. I’ve never been to one though. :)

Nods. We’ve got one here in Hamilton; I love the huge mixture of veggies to choose from. I just usually go for some hokey pokey ice cream for pudding because I’m not a big pancake fan.

Oh! This is just like a restaurant we had in boston, Fire and Ice. http://www.fire-ice.com/boston-ma/. I like it because if you have picky eaters, everyone can go, since everyone picks exactly what’s in your food. The last time I went, sometime close to when I moved, I got sick because I picked a thai sauce that had peanuts…but I’d still def go back again! I didn’t know it was called mongolian bbq though, they never said it was. I would go if we had one here in SF.

I LOVE Mongolian BBQ! here in Michigan the chain is named Mongolian BBQ lol

I love the combinations you can come up with on a whim and I never have the same meal twice. I also enjoy that they will give you lettuce leaves if you are doing no carb or no wheat. OH! And they will cook my order in back to keep it “allergy free.” You don’t get to watch them cook it, but it’s still yummy.

Yeah, I love it. I may make the hubby take me there for dinner this week now. :)
