OIKIOS Greek Yogurt (Chocolate) Review… And The Greek Yogurt Search

by Mary

Morning start off with 5 m&m cookies before and after my breakfast. Yesh. That happened. I’m not going to deny it or pretend that I took pictures of it. But then I posted on the other blog about some things I’ve been thinking and all the good comments there helped me get back on track. With my day. And in the end it hasn’t been a terrible day at all.

Breakfast was a turkey and cheese english muffin with mayo. I like these.

For lunch I had leftovers, because leftovers are awesome! Salmon cake and potato wedges!

Salmon Cake and Wedges

I ate lunch pretty late so there was no afternoon snack. Dinner was made by my mom because I’m sick and don’t want to spread my germs any more than necessary. She made pork chops and baked potatoes (with light sour cream) and salad (with raspberry walnut vinaigrette).

After dinner I decided to try out the new Greek yogurt I got! I wanted to try Oikos brand because I haven’t had them yet. I also got chocolate flavored because I’ve learned I don’t really love plain yogurt. I’ve never had chocolate flavored yogurt, but I love all things chocolate so I thought it would be a good idea!

Chocolate Greek Yogurt

I was a little worried when I opened it and it looked like this:

Then I started to stir it up and realized that it wasn’t too bad… there was chocolate stuff!

At the end it looked pretty nice. I thought it would taste pretty good.

I was wrong. I HATED it! Oh man! I can’t believe I hated something with the word chocolate in it. That’s like against my nature. But I couldn’t take more than a couple bites of this before I gave up and threw it away. It didn’t taste like chocolate and it didn’t taste like good yogurt. I could stand the other plain flavored greek yogurt with granola mixed in, but even with granola I hated this stuff.

That’s four dollars wasted. (Makes me want to cry almost.) Maybe I should just stick with foods I know I like? That way I can’t waste money? It might make me a boring food blogger, but at least I won’t be wasting money!

I’m still searching for a greek yogurt that I like and can eat. I LOVE yogurt as something sort of sweet and healthy instead of other things I could be eating. I love the protein packed yogurt so I’m going to keep trying them, even if I have to waste a bit of money. Once I find some brands + flavors that I like I will stick with them.

Any suggestions for good brands/flavors of greek yogurt? Should I try Oikos again in a different flavor?

I like the Greek yogurt from trader joes but I don’t know if you have a trader joes locally. Don’t give up on trying new things! If your diet gets boring or too predictable you will crave flavors and want to eat out or revert to yucky food. Keep trying, variety is the spice of life!

We don’t have a trader joes around here, which makes me sad!!

I will keep trying new things, when my budget allows. Which is not all the time.

Yogurt is right up there with tomatoes on my hated food list…ugh it stinks so bad! I like pudding tho! hehe

Haha, you hate all the healthy stuff, don’t you?

I recently tried that yogurt, but in fruit flavors! I liked it! But I imagine that chocolate would be weird… Hmmm…

I usually like fruit flavors of something like honey or vanilla. I just wanted to try chocolate because I normally like chocolate things! Now I know that I don’t.

Oikos is one of the brands I like best, but sometimes the tangyness is too much. We haven’t been able to find the chocolate in our area, but I don’t know that I’d like it either. Chobani’s pretty good, too.

Lately, the greek yogurt I’ve been eating a lot of is Dannon’s – it’s really good, not so tangy, super-creamy and less expensive than some of the others. Give it a try, you might like it!

I had Dannon’s for my first try and I did like their Vanilla flavor. But everyone said Oikos was good so I wanted to try it. Maybe I should try vanilla Oikos.

How come you get greek yogurt as opposed to regular yogurt? Just curious. Ive tried chocolate yogurt before. Not that kind. Ive even tried boston cream pie yogurt. Yuk. I guess sometimes healthy things taste better with just healthy stuff in them (fruit yogurts) and shouldn’t try to mix them? Cuz I love chocolate too so youre right, it should taste good.
I don’t eat greek yogurt, but these regular yogurts are good, I think: http://www.rachelsorganic.co.uk/ and http://www.wallabyyogurt.com/html/home.htm. They are both good for you and very tasty and have no corn syrup in them like a lot of yogurts do. Rachel’s is more $ but it goes on sale a lot. It’s hard to find though. Wallabys is in all the grocery stores though, at least in SF.

I like greek yogurt because it has less sugar and more protein. Win! I’ve never heard of those brands of yogurt but I’ll keep an eye out for them.

merri March 18, 2010 at 10:37 PM

They might not have them where you are, SF tends to have more healthy choices in stores than other places, I’ve noticed. Oh, that makes sense. I didn’t really know that greek yogurt has more protein. Cottage cheese is yummy for that too (I like Nancy’s brand).

Mary March 19, 2010 at 2:07 PM

Yeah. We have really limited choices in Memphis. we aren’t exactly known for our healthy food.

I hate cottage cheese! Haha.

I’m noticing you eat mayo often? It’s very high calorie and pretty much all fat, there are flavorful options for bread dressing that are healthier. That said, I really like your blog.

Mary April 2, 2010 at 3:58 AM

I’m aware that there are other options that have fewer calories, but I like mayo. So I eat it. That’s not going to change. :)

Thanks!

Thanks for the review – uuk. Being a chocoholic, I also used to say – I never met a chocolate I didn’t like – but since then have found a few things that were a horrible waste of a chocolate bean.

I recently heard about using Greek Yogurt as a substitute for sour cream in recipes – Hugely more healthy. In the ways that I have tried it, I have noticed differences but still worked. As a sweet however, I can see how base yougurt taste would make a big difference.

Working with my GY today and thought – I bet you could make a good chocolate yummy with this as a base – and my internet search found your review. I also found the following recipe for GY chocolate mousse. I haven’t tried it yet but I bet that it could be yummy. Even without all the prep to make it a mousse, I bet it the ingredients together (maybe minus theh egg whites) would make it a good chocolate greek yogurt.

Thanks again for the review
