“Protein Style” Burgers and S’mores

by Mary

Blogging today was so difficult! My wiresless at home is nonexistant so it’s a million times harder to get a blog post done. But here it is! Hurray!

Ohmygosh. Looking back quickly over the photos today it seems like I ate so much! I think it’s because I snacked a lot more than normal. Perhaps I can blame that on my french toast breakfast?

french toast

My mom wanted to make Kepa french toast the way she has always had it, which is different from anything he has had (never sweet). Mmmm, french toast. I had a slice and a half with syrup.

At the grocery store I went to buy veggies and ended up leaving with some sweet cinnamon challah bread. My youngest brother who went with us wanted it so I ended up caving. I ate a small slice when we got home.

It was yummy! I also had another slice later in the day. Snacky, snacky. Sweet bread is one of my favorite things.

For lunch I ate my leftover half turkey sub from Lenny’s. I add lots of lettuce and a slice of pepper jack cheese to make it an awesome sandwich. It also had mayo, hot pepper relish, and onions on it. With that I ate a plum – my first one ever!

I really liked the plum. A new fruit to add to my list of loves. ;)

My snacking continued with a bowl of raisin bran while Kepa and my mom were out for coffee. I didn’t go and I guess my alone time was filled with food. At the time it felt fair, but of course after I ate it I was very full.

For dinner my mom made corn and hamburgers with an onion flavoring. It’s not the normal way she makes burgers, but it was so good!! I decided to have mine “protein style” because I really wanted to try that at In-N-Out and didn’t get to. So I wrapped up my burger, tomato, and pepper jack cheese in some lettuce with ketchup and mustard.

Burger protein style

It’s such a messy way to eat a burger! Especially a juicy one! I ended up dripping juice and condiments all over my plate. Not at all dignified eating, but it was awesome. I think I might prefer this way to using bread.

Then after dinner we bought stuff to make s’mores because Kepa has never had them and that was something he really wanted to do in the states. Why would I say no to something as amazing as s’mores, especially on a day where I’m eating sugar? I wouldn’t. So I made these beauties.

smores

I admit, I ate two more and hour later. Soooo good. What’s not to love about s’mores?

But woah, I’ve had a lot of sugar today. I feel like sometimes having certain days where I eat sugar things can get out of control. Whereas I say no on other days, I tend to say yes to everything on sugar days.  That’s something I need to consider and maybe rework. I mean, I’m still only eating sugar socially which is better than alone, but if I’m eating so much does it matter? Things for me to ponder.

Do you like burgers without bread? It’s my new favorite way of eating them!

What about s’mores?  The answer to this has to be yes, doesn’t it?

The way we make burgers is to use 2 grilled portabella mushroom caps as bread. We love anything mushroom around here. We do make sandwiches with lettuce leaves, and whenever I make fish tacos or fajitas we use lettuce wraps instead of flour tortillas.

And tonight might have to be a s’mores night. Carolyn has never had one. It might be time.

I’ve seen people do that, but I hate mushrooms. Yuck. Haha. It’s one of the few things I haven’t warmed up to.

Aww, I hope she likes them! :)

I need to have bread with my burgers :) Luckily there is an abundance of bread here!!! Hehe.

And as MrsFatass said, burgers with portabella mushroom caps are delicious.

And I LOOOOVE s’mores! Delicious! :) Thank you for treating me to them :)

I also like eating them without bread. After having numerous situations just like what you described, I have resorted to cutting them and eating them with a knife and fork. It kinda takes away from the burger experience…but the taste is just the same. Plus I then do not feel as guilty if i have a a few fries or chips. I.

I’ve done that before, but I love burgers for the fact that I can pick them up! Lettuce is a bit messy but it’s doable. ;)

i’m sitting here with my mouth open because you’d never tried a plum before!

Hello, I’m Mary. I used to hate all vegetables and most fruits. Eh.

I cant believe how many things you haven’t tried.

I haven’t had a burger without the bum because I don’t eat meat & veggie burgers/lentil burgers just dont taste good in whole form in my opinion. I’d much rather break it up into a salad.

Mmmm that french toast looks soo good! The cinnamon bread looks good too. I bet if you had used that cinnamon challah bread to make the french toast (I know you hadnt bought it yet) it would have been even more yummy. Oh that was your first plum? I love plums. My coworker has a plum tree and was bringing in bowls of apricots and plums that he couldn’t use.. But they seem to be all gone now. Too bad! Did she put the lipton onion mix into the hamburger before she cooked it? Sometimes we used to have those growing up. I forgot about it but it was good! The smores look good too.
Burgers without bread are ok but I prefer the bread. Well, I prefer a bun, actually. And since I never make them, but always get them (usually from barneys!) they always come with one!
Yes I like smores but I have only really made them once which was the winter before last when I went on a ski trip with my friends. Surprisingly, I never made them growing up that I can remember, and also have not since.
Sue’s idea sounds good. I am not a mushroom fan but portabellas don’t taste like mushrooms they taste like meat. I have a recipe somewhere to try that mixes the hamburger meat with the portabellas cut up i think. Id still want bread.
