Y’all, life in Memphis is hard. It’s especially hard during this week in May when the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is held in Memphis.
The contest is a weeklong event for the teams that enter since they start setting up early in the week. The cooking doesn’t start til later and the official event is May 14-16. We went for lunch on the first official day yesterday. My boss is actually on a team so we went to eat at their booth.
What a lunch, right? There isn’t a healthy thing on this plate which is pretty much the point of eating at BBQ Fest. Of course, my eyes are usually bigger than my stomach so I didn’t finish it all but I wanted to! This was an incredibly delicious plate of food from a team that also has a catering company here in town. They know what they are doing!
The way BBQ Fest (as it’s called around these parts) works is that people can pay $10 to get in and walk around. If you know people in booths you can go eat there but most are only open to those they know. In the past the public hasn’t really had an option to eat unless they knew someone. That changed this year so 3 booths are selling to the public, but the best way to go is still through someone you know. Most booths have open bars and open buffets to the people that are allowed in, so it ends up being a huge party.
I’ll be headed back to BBQ later for another round of meat and drinks. This time I’m headed back with friends so we will be visiting different booths. It’s arguably the most barbecue I’ll consume all year. I’d be happy eating BBQ once every couple of months but during this celebration of barbecue I’ll eat it once a day for several days.
I’ll probably need a cleanse next week after several days of such heavy food from BBQ Fest! Good thing this fun event only comes around once a year!
