A Healthy Day In The Life

September 22, 2011 by Mary

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for details.

I’ve read some of these diarist type posts on other blogs and newspapers and found them fascinating. The ones I’ve read were focused on either sex or money but I wanted to do my own based on healthy habits or at least the attempt to be healthy.  This was yesterday which I meant to post last night but forgot!

6:30 – Woke up and decided to go back to sleep since once again my sleep wasn’t good. Probably need to sleep in a different room while house sitting so I don’t wake up multiple times through the night.

7:23 – Woke up for real after having a bad wedding dream about everything going horribly wrong. Thought about going to the gym for a quick 30 minutes but decided it wasn’t worth the effort to get sweaty before work. Promised myself I would go after work.

7:45 – Decided to go up and down the stairs at the house 10 times since I have free time to burn.

8:05 – After finishing the stairs and checking my email I decide to make breakfast. Heat up two egg and veggie muffins. Top those with ketchup and decide I also want Honey Nut Cheerios. There is only skim milk in the fridge so I use that.

8:55 – Take the stairs down from the 5th floor of the parking garage but take the elevator up because I forgot the key to the stairs in my car.

9:30 – Start writing this diary style post in between answering work e-mails. Realize I should be drinking more water because I’ve only had 20 ounces.

9:50 – First bathroom break of the day. The bathroom is empty so I take advantage of the space. I do 10 squats, 10 counter pushups, and run in place for a minute while doing punches. It makes me remember how much I miss taking cardio kickboxing classes.

10:55 – Second bathroom break and I lucked out again with an empty bathroom. 10 more squats, 10 more counter pushups. 20 jumping jacks this time to warm me up and wake me up.

11:30 – Thought about eating since my meeting is during my normal lunch hour. Decided I was too nervous about the meeting (for no reason) and would eat and relax after it was over. Finished my bottle of water (40 oz) and refilled.

1:00 pm – Super hungry after the meeting since I haven’t eaten since 8 am. Make a turkey sandwich on wheat bread crusts with lots of mixed greens. Eat some carrots and green bean chips too. Boring but healthy. Feel happy that I made good choices and ate greens and carrots for lunch.

1:20 pm – Wrote a quick blog post about my boring lunch while finishing off my carrots.

1:30 pm – Publish blog post. Consider writing one about my secret goal. Figure I should just write it in this post since it will be on the blog anyway, and mention that I want to wear my size 14s again by the time I move to NZ. Since my 16s are loose I figure I’m close and feel motivated to make it happen.

2:10 pm – Another bathroom break with an empty bathroom. 30 second wall sit, 10 counter pushups, and 20 more jumping jacks.

2:20 pm – Finish another water bottle and refill. 60 oz for the day.

3:00 pm – Stomach is already growling. Decide to eat Chobani and Kashi GoLean since it’s one of the higher protein snacks I have on hand. Ponder whether I should workout at the gym after work or not. Around 3 pm I lose my desire to workout after work. Every time. It’s ridiculous. I’m more consistent if I work out in the mornings but housesitting has thrown me off my routine.

3:45 pm – Trip to the bathroom resulted in 10 counter pushups, 10 squats, 20 buttkicks, and 20 jumping jacks.

4:10 pm – Office trip to Walgreens. It’s a one block walk and it feels amazing outside. Reconsider the gym for  walk or bike ride outside to enjoy the nice weather. Appreciate the trip to the store just to get up and move even though I never buy anything.

4:50 pm – Finish off my water bottle. 80 oz for the day. Decide I most definitely don’t want to go to the gym. Waver between going for a walk/ride outside or running wedding errands which would involve some walking. Leaning toward wedding errands since I only have 24 days left.

4:54 pm – Freak out slightly because I only have 24 days left. Being a procrastinator never pays.

5:10 pm – Talk myself back into going to the gym. End up doing 20 minutes of high intensity interval training on the elliptical machine. Follow that with 10 minutes walking at an incline. Feel good about the decision when I leave.

6:45 pm – Cook dinner. Made a salmon burger with seasoned (by me meaning no salt) vegetables on the side. Finish off another bottle of water for 100 oz for the day. Ate a banana walnut muffin top for dessert.

9:00 pm – Finally get back home after running some errands. Call my best friend and then collapse on the couch to finish this post.

9:45 pm – Finish another water bottle. 120 oz or so for the day. You can thank me later kidneys.

11:00 pm – Oh hey, it’s bedtime! I finally fell asleep around this time despite going to bed earlier.

That’s a typical day for me when I don’t workout in the morning. I fit in exercise where I can and fight with myself on things like going to the gym if I don’t do it in the morning. Though this is probably boring to read it actually really helped me stay conscious of what I ate and did all day! I find these types of posts so interesting so if anyone wants to do one too please do!

I used to house sit all the time, but I found that for some reason it really messed with me – I’d get anxious and it would lead to unhealthyness, so finally I just had to say that I wasn’t doing it anymore. It was a good choice on my part. I don’t know if it’s something to do with taking care of someone else’s stuff, but I think that for those of us who have a tendency toward anxiety, it can be a little dangerous!

I totally understand what you are saying. I actually drove back by the house before work this morning because I wasn’t 100% sure I had shut the garage and didn’t want the cats to get out. Of course I had shut it but being responsible for their house and pets makes me a tiny bit anxious and throws off what I would normally do for the day.

I like how you squeeze bits of training in and I really appreciate you showing the battle with the gym- that’s something I can relate to all too well.
And 24 days? That’s exciting! From what you’ve shown us, you’ll be ready. And if something isn’t done? Your wedding will still be wonderful.

Battle with the gym happens a lot. Usually I end up going but there is almost always an internal struggle.

Believe me, there will be stuff that isn’t done. But it will still be awesome. :)

I really enjoyed the post, especially your self-talk during the day. I think I will do a post like that in the near future!

It was a very minor freakout. It was over quickly. But yeah… it’s coming soon!

I wish we had talked too. Our schedules suck right now.

I so relate to the inner dialogue about whether I wan to work out after work. Morning workouts are so hard for me since Iike to sleep in, but they’re the best guarantee that I’ll get a slamming workout in.

I also love your bathroom break workouts! I’m going to have to start doing that. Thanks for the idea.

About 3 weeks before my wedding reception, I made a calendar and transferred everything from my to-do list onto the calendar. It helped me organize everything, but it also helped me to see that I only had to do one or two (or sometimes three) things a day rather than just always seeing a large looming list in front of me.

Good idea about the calendar. I might try that because this never ending long to do list that I keep avoiding is not going well!

I think its funny that your whole office goes to Walgreens together. A good funny though. You are awesome at water drinking!! I also like your bathroom workouts! Someone is ALWAYS in our bathroom (there’s even once in a while a line to the 3 stalls!) but I do try to covertly do little exercises sometimes while waiting for a copier or fax. I kinda like this post. I’ve been doing non-advertised random week diary posts, but not a day in the life kinda way like this. Maybe I’ll try it sometime on a weekday.

[…] My Blog friend Mary did this day in the life thing on her blog, and encouraged me to do one too, so here goes… I chronicled my whole Monday. Maybe dull, maybe interesting to see what a typical day is like.  643-710am alarm goes off..I fight with myself to get myself out of bed, and into the shower. 750am, out of the shower, I get dressed and pack for the day/gym (things are usually all over the place after a weekend).  804am I put on quick makeup, and 809am I quickly go online to schedule a blog to post, and to post up an ad for our club. 815am I make lunch for myself and my roomie, and at 830am, I’m out the door. I arrive to work at 904am. Due to the slowness of my computer, I read and check my phone till 923am, when the computer finally logs on enough for me to start checking my work email (slowly, because it’s still warming up). At 10am, I break to make breakfast. Breakfast is Ezekiel 4:9 cereal with grapefruit and organic plain yogurt. I usually use Nancy’s brand, which I love, but right now I have Safeway organic brand, which I’m trying out but not a fan of, as it’s almost as runny as milk, and tastes like nothingness. I also have water, and after cereal, a cup of tea with splenda and unsweetened soymilk. The next few hours I sit at my desk and work. Once in a while, I get up to scan something, or get a paper off the printer, or fax something. While I wait for faxes to go through, I do some stretching because it’s hard to stand still doing nothing that long. I come to realize how  boring my day is.. lol. At 134 it’s time for lunch. Often, when the weather is nice like it has been the past week or two, I go sit outside if I can, but today it’s drizzley and yucky out (and forecasted for pouring rain the next 2 days), so I usurp the ‘quiet room’ to have lunch in there instead. I had a turkey sandwich with mustard, cheese, avocado, craisins, rosemary, red pepper flakes, black pepper and Alvarado st. sprouted bread, with water. I finished up the last few paragraphs of my nemesis by Philip roth book and started cast not the day by paul waters, plus checked facebook on my phone. The quiet room is so peaceful, I love having that half hour just to myself. Actually, I overstayed by 15 minutes, but by 215ish I was back working. At 240 I had to stop for tea though! Just black tea w splenda! By 3, I’m definitely getting antsy, my mind wanders a lot. I’d rather not still be at work. Work days are too long. At 351 I go to the kitchen and make a homemade iced coffee. At 4 every day, someone comes and cleans out the coffee from the kitchen, so right before, I make my own iced coffee (since I don’t like hot coffee) out of a half a small cup of coffee, splenda, a lot of ice, and then the rest unsweetened soy milk (or, sometimes unsweetened almond milk, but I have soy today). If the coffee is too strong, or I put too much in, my vision gets blurry from too much caffeine. Its always a gamble what will happen! LOL. But around now I’m so bored, and today looking forward to my turbokickboxing, which I had to skip last Monday. Today’s tastes a bit weird, maybe burned? I can’t drink this.. Back to my water. I also have 9 almonds. Random #, it’s just what I grabbed out of the almond bag! 509pm I give up on working, even though I’ve barely made even a teency dent in everything that needs to get done, and clean up and get ready for the evening. I leave work at 532pm and arrive at the gym at 6. Turbokickboxing! What a great workout, I’m so gym high!! Love it! I walk home and arrive at 808pm. I quickly change and set to washing dishes, cooking dinner, and eating dinner with my roomie. We have mixed frozen veggies, quinoa, and chicken cut up and cooked on top of the stove with tofu, soy sauce and some small peppers from the CSA. We eat while watching tv, and by 945 dinner, and the show (Desperate housewives) are done. Dessert is a Pomegranate Skyr (it’s like yogurt sort of) yum! More tv as the background to getting some work done online with photos and for the club, etc. At 1124pm, I go to my room to read more in bed and by midnite it’s lights out, I’m tired tonite so I’m slightly early. And that was my day! Most weekdays are similar, with different workouts. Weekends tend to be a lot different. If you do one of these, let me know, and I’ll read it, I’m always interested to see what other people’s lives are like! Share this:PrintEmailFacebookStumbleUponRedditDigg […]
