A Hip New Reason To Lose Weight

Every once in a while a lady that comes into our gym will bring a stack of awesome health magazines for us. I usually read them all and then put them on the fitness floor or the members to use (I read them first since they are always gone within a day because people take them).

In the last batch she gave me I ran across a health article that struck me enough that I tore it out and stuck it on my wall for motivation. The article come from Shape Magazine’s August 2006 edition and discusses the benefit to your joints of having a healthy BMI.

Obese women (those with a BMI over 32) in their 20s are almost three times as likely to undergo hip-replacement surgery in their lifetime than those who had a healthy BMI (18.5-21.9), found a study of more than 1 million people published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism. Even being just slightly overweight (a BMI of 27) increased the risk twofold in older women. But if weight loss is still on your to-do list, it’s not too late: Researchers say that lowering your BMI has a positive impact on your joints well into middle age.

    Yup! My husband is about 15 pounds overweight at the moment and his knees are not coping well with running anymore. When you hit 40, these things matter more and more!

    @Hanlie
    You are right! And its sooo easy for people like me that are young to forget that in 20 years things like this will be important. Everyone should take care of themselves no matter where they live.

    SURELY this cannot apply to people whose BMI is increasing through to development of muscle mass :-/

    @Marshy
    I highly doubt that. Clearly the BMI isn’t perfect and I don’t think this study meant for the healthy high BMIs but for the simply obese ones.

    I believe it! I was diagnosed with knee problems when I was 28 years old. My hips were starting to bother me by age 32. When I talked to the doctor and read up on it, I found that it’s common for the knees to go first and then the hips to follow.

    On the positive side. The loss of 100 plus pounds has totally eradicated any hip pain…and has GREATLY lessoned the knee problems! WOO HOOOO!
