A Thank You and A Commitment

March 8, 2010 by Mary

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for details.

After my last post and this weekend I’ve decided that I have the best readers in the world. That’s really the only conclusion anyone can come to.  This community rocks and the support I’ve manage to get (and give here) and made me life a million times better.  There will always be haters and people that don’t like what you are doing, but I’m trying to learn not to let that affect me anymore.  It’s all part of the journey, I suppose.

Since I took the weekend off blogging and all, I didn’t do my weigh in and video and all that.  I liked it.  But alas, I’m not ready to chuck my scale yet completely.  I’ll be back with the weigh ins next weekend.

I also unintentionally stopped exercising over the weekend.  Between my mom being sick, a random stray dog to care for, catching up with friends, and events to attend, exercise just didn’t get the time it deserved.  I’m sure I could have carved out time somewhere (did someone say wake up earlier?) but I didn’t.  I just stopped exercising on Thursday and never looked back.  Honestly, I think my knees appreciated it.  They don’t totally love this jogging stuff.  Maybe I’m not meant to run.

But I am meant to be healthy.  So I’m back to working on that and writing about it too.  If I’ve learned anything over the past two years it’s that writing this blog keeps me committed.  I know that there are at least a few people out there reading and watching and cheering me on.  It keeps me committed to living a healthier life and coming back to doing things the right way after I’ve messed up.  I remember in the beginning all those times I blogged about gaining weight.  I never gave up then and I don’t plan on giving up now.  This blogging story reminds me to keep going, the accountability spurs me on.  I’m committed to finishing out this story and I’m grateful for all the cool people I’ve picked up along the way as readers.  So thanks for that.

Just a quick post today, saying thanks.  I’m off to grocery shop because as I posted on my food blog, we are out of everything!  I’m pretty excited though, because I love grocery shopping!  I’m not a huge fan of shopping for other things, but I love food shopping.  Maybe because food is good? We should have done it sooner before we ran out of pretty much all food.  I blame my younger brothers who eat everything all the time.

What about you?  Do you love grocery shopping or hate it?  How often do you go?

I went shopping yesterday and since I started paying attention to what I’m eating…It’s a lot more fun. The produce section is a lot more fun. I think it’s because I get to try to find the best of the fruits and veggies rather than just getting prepackaged meals. A lot more variety. Keep up the good work.

The produce section is my favorite! I used to like the aisles, but not any more. I like picking out the fresh stuff and deciding what to make with it.

I used to HATE grocery shopping! So much so that I hardly ever did it, and just ate take-out most of the time.

I am starting to come around though. . . . While we still get a lot of our groceries at Walmart, we’ve also started shopping at the local farmer’s market and at a smaller, co-op grocery store. Both of the latter are much more enjoyable grocery shopping experiences!

    • Mary says

      March 8, 2010 at 1:56 pm

Yeah, I shop at Walmart because it’s generally cheaper, but I HATE it. Once the farmers markets start up around here again I’m hitting them up.

I didn’t have to go grocery shopping at all this weekend cause I got my first delivery from the CSA I joined on Friday! My fridgie is chock full of fresh veggies and fruits. I have all sorts of cooking experiments planned for this week

Grocery shopping used to be “fun.” I would throw every processed food item possible into my cart and skip the produce aisle. Nothing healthy allowed, because of course, it tasted like crap. How wrong I was!!! Now, I still love grocery shopping, but for different reasons. I plan my meals for the week and buy only what I truly need. I hit up the produce aisle first, and my meals are built around veggies.

Winter is finally starting to melt around here, and I’m itchin’ for a Farmer’s Market to get going around here…only 3 more months! :-)

That’s a nice change!! I actually think it’s more fun when you aren’t buying the same processed crap every week because you get to pick out the veggies and meat and find the best stuff!

I honestly love to grocery shop, if I have a list. If I don’t, I may as well just go straight to the candy aisle and frozen pizza section and have a binge fest.

Definitely with Erin on the farmer’s market. I LOVE fresh produce!

    • Mary says

      March 8, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Haha!!! Binge fest. That’s no good.

I honestly have no desire to ever buy a ton of crap when I’m shoppin anymore. I know that life is easier for me if I don’t buy it and I’ll save my money. So the temptation isn’t there (just when someone else buys it and shoves it in front of me!).

I agree with you both! Fresh produce rocks!

You have a great blog here and tons of followers. I’m one of them. :)

Keep going strong, the weekends are times where we sometimes slack, but Monday just back to doing what you do best.

I have a training session at my gym in a few hours. My weekend was full of eating out, but I didn’t gain any weight thankfully. :)

    Keep going strong.

Weekends are usually slacker time because it’s time to “relax” and not work. So working out gets put in that category sometimes.

Good job eating out but not gaining weight over the weekend! You can eat out and eat healthy. ;)

I actually love grocery shopping and do it weekly, but I plan my meals for the week and create a list from that, otherwise it’s too easy for me to get out-of-control with the shopping. Typically, each week, I only need to spend 30 minutes at the store (sadly, Sundays fits best in my schedule, even though it’s super crowded and takes longer then) to purchase mostly produce and dairy. Once every month or two, I’ll stock up on proteins. I buy grains/pastas/breads as I need them.

I love grocery shopping. I go once a week.

I LOVE grocery shopping. Pretty much every time we go, it’s difficult for me to avoid going down Every. Single. Aisle. just to see what’s there.

My husband was born and raised in Alaska. His mum grew some of their vegetables in the garden, but there was stuff that had to be bought from the shop. As you can imagine, since back then everything was shipped up, how little fresh, RIPE, fruit was available. To this day, his dad will still salt and pepper canteloupe, because that’s the way he ate it growing up, and they had to give it flavour, somehow. Dad-in-law even did it in Australia, during the middle of summer, on a perfectly, lusciously, ripe canteloupe. LOL

Umm, this is my long-winded way of saying I had to teach my husband how to shop for green-groceries. I love watching him as over the years his confidence grows or the pride in his eyes when he knows he successfully picked good quality fruit’n’veg. :D

    • Mary says

      March 8, 2010 at 2:06 pm

Hehe. Ooo, salt and pepper cantaloupe. That’s a rough life. It would not be fun to never have access to fresh fruits and veggies!

At least your husband had you to teach him! I’ve had a lot of people explain to me how to pick things out… I’m still shaky in my knowledge of what is best.

We’re all allowed a few days off now and then. It’s hopping back to it that shows our commitment! Grocery shopping…we go every 2 weeks. (With a weekend run when we need to restock on salad, apples and bananas for the coming week) We go to 3 sometimes 4 stores. This is not something we ever set out to do but when you want certain things and your main grocery store keeps yanking stuff then you don’t have much choice. Love Trader Joe’s and get most of our fish and cheeses there as well as some odds and ends like oatmeal, yogurt and smoothie base for him. Target has much better prices on dry goods than our normal store. Mac and cheese, high fiber oatmeal, Boca burgers, peanut butter, Arnold Sandwich thins, etc are all much cheaper there than Krog’s.

    • Mary says

      March 8, 2010 at 10:57 pm

I like to shop, but I am a bit ritualistic about it. I only shop the perimeter of the market, because that is where the fresh stuff is. Don’ go down the center isles unless I know exactly what I am going to get. Otherwise, the cookies will come a-callin’!

I love grocery shopping, but I do my vegetables/produce shopping at Asian markets (SO much cheaper) and some at Costco and the random beans/cheese/Skinny Cow at regular grocery stores. How did you get a random stray dog? Is it ok? Did you find a home for it? Hope your mom’s feeling better. Sometimes I like grocery shopping and sometimes I don’t. when I can make a big thing of it, and have some way to get the groceries home, I like to go through the entire store. My roomie and I tend to hover over everything, looking at what would taste better, what ingredients are in this, etc, which can drive some of our friends BATTY because they like to get in and out. I like buying and trying random new stuff I find there. The other kind of grocery shopping, where im stopping in on my way home, already tired, to grab a couple of things cuz we’re out, is annoying, because I really just want to go home. I estimate that between my roomie and I, we tend to shop every couple of days. A good time to go is in the middle of the night after the clubs (we have 24 hr grocery stores) because it helps calm you down after going out and its not busy after. 2am shopping is awesome! We used to have to go every single day when we had more people living with us, because some people ate us out of house and home, which suxd because it was SO expensive. Im VERY happy not to have that siutation anymore.

“There will always be haters and people that don’t like what you are doing, but I’m trying to learn not to let that affect me anymore.” – I’m learning to become thick-skinned.

I get very nervous about grocery shopping. I like shopping, but sometimes I have to white-knuckle it past the bakery section where I habitually buy pastries and rip into them once I get into the car. I didn’t do that today. I looked. Picked it up. The lady at the counter asked if she could help me. I said, “Yes. Tell me ‘No, you can’t have that!’ ” She saw what I was looking at and said, “Oh, those are so good.” I put it down and walked away (this time).

I would have told you no. ;) I’ve actually done that before… bought brownies once and ended up eating like 4 in the car. Now I just don’t go near the bakery section unless I’m allowing something or buying it for someone else.
