Quick post, just want to share some photos. During my lunch break I took a quick walk. Almost every day in Court Square near my office in downtown Memphis there is some sort of activity going on.
Today Live From Memphis was showcasing aerial acrobatics.
There were two performers, a guy and a girl.
The guys went first when I arrived.
The girl was really impressive in my opinion. Her flips down were crazy!
My reaction:
I’ve seen this on tv before but never in person. It’s actually a lot more impressive in person, especially after watching them climb up over and over again. You would need some major upper body strength for that. The whole thing looks like it takes a lot of work but the resulting performance is amazing. They had a big crowd.
I know I couldn’t do it. Could you?
Does anyone do aerial acrobatics? Want to? I’m intrigued by this!
I couldn’t do it. I would get too dizzy.
i did a few aerial yoga class this year…its the same set up but much closer to the ground. :) it was really fun and i even learned how to do a few of the flippy tricks, but nothing too crazy. i think lack of upper body strength would stop me from ever being really good at it.
My sister in law took classes for a year or two, and she is no skinny minnie, so I really think anyone can do this! She said it really works out your entire body and she woke up sore a lot, but can be a lot of fun when you find yourself hanging upside down in some strange position and you don’t know how you got there. You have to start really small and work your way up to the big tricks. I’d be willing to give it a try. :-)
I think I would give it a try too. I would definitely have to start small!
I would LOVE to learn – but I know I don’t have the strength to do it right now. That, and pole dancing, lol.
It just looks so fun!
I would love to do that at some point in my life. It really is awe-inspiring.
I took an aerial silks class a few weeks ago and was blown away by how freaking *hard it was! I was sore for a full week after the class ended.
That makes sense! It looks like it works all your muscles really hard.
I took a trapeze class over holiday break that also offered aerial arts. I’m considering, but the trapeze was so fun I’d probably go back to do that… :)
I’ve seen this a few times. They tend to do this at clubs here in SF, or other places, but I’ve seen it at a circus and concert in Boston too. The last place I saw it was at the big weekend party I went to in Palm Springs in April, I think those people were from Cirque de Soleiel. Anyways, these people are super talented. They have to have SO MUCH strength in their bodies in order to do this! It’s very pretty and cool but I don’t think I’d take it up…even if I somehow got strong enough, all that twirling around would make me dizzy lol.
HOW COOL!!!!!!!!!! I saw this on America’s Got Talent, I think – takes such control & strength & the ladies & men always are rock hard!!!!
Me – nope, don’t think I could do that. If I was a lot younger, I would try! ;-)
Since when does super cool stuff like this happen in Memphis?! :-P
I have always wanted to learn those tricks. Every time I would see it at the circus (because, yes, the circus is still a viable activity for a 25 year old. ha!) I would get inspired. I was a gymnast when I was much younger, but I’m sure I would have to train hard to become strong enough!
I know, right? Some cool stuff has been happening in Memphis though!
That is really cool!! I don’t know that I could ever do acrobatics like that or necessarily have a desire but I did look into a trapeze school when we were in Napa and it looked fun. We opted for the hot air balloon ride. :-)
That looks awesome! I’d love to try it, but I feel I’m still too heavy. I think there’s an aerial circus class in my area (aerial acrobatics and trapeze) that I would love to take, if only once to say “I’ve done that!” :)
That is so freaking cool! The owner of the dance studio I teach at is looking to start doing aerials, If she finds an instructor I’m totally going to try it. I am really working on not letting my fear stop me from doing things. It does take lots of strength…guess I have a good reason to strength train lol
It looks like a lot of fun but until I get upper body strength there’s no way I could look as good as them.
You know i dont usual comment, but i actually like your blog and i thought i would introduce myself. I have been reading it for awhile but this is my very first comment.
Hi! I’m moving back to Memphis this fall and have been doing aerial silks for a year in Atlanta. I’m not great right now becuase I took a 3 month break and have to build up my upper body strength and abdominal muscles all over agin…not fun- especially when you know how to do everything, but physically can’t. Anyway I should be back up to par soon but then I’ll be leaving all of my fellow aerialists and trainers. I’m looking for someone that teaches in Memphis so I can continue to train or someone to just play in the silks with me! I’m probably going to buy a portable rig or set it up in my house.
