Okay, today I’m talking about food. Why? Because you guys asked me lots of questions about it. And I love food. Food is good. It nourishes your body AND it tastes good. WIN!!
So, Lillian asked me:
What foods are in your cart every single time you go to the grocery store?
It’s been a while since I’ve been grocery shopping but I’ll give you the list from what I remember. I always buy: bread, milk (1% or skim), orange juice, chicken breasts, tuna, fresh veggies (whatever is in season plus bell peppers), black beans, sweet potatoes (I’m obsessed), gum. I seriously buy this stuff every time. I always have other stuff I get, but those are my staples.
Then BodyByPizza asked me:
If you were a food item, what would you be and why?
Hehe, I would be pizza! Why? Because I would be DELICIOUS and everyone would love me. And I could be so many different varieties of the same thing! Yummmy!
Sian from GirlGetStrong asked me:
What are your fav low cal snacks?
Would love to know what you eat in a day…
My favorite snacks are: fresh fruit with a tablespoon of peanut butter, 5-6 triscuits and cheese, sugar free Jello pudding (the kind that has dark light dark in one container). Those are all pretty low calorie.
What I eat in a current day… well for the first month at Green Mountain I documented everything I ate by photo. If you are interested just check some of the posts from the beginning. I normally eat 1800 – 2200 calories, which has been working out well for me losing weight and is something I can sustain at home. For breakfast I normally have raisin bran with toast and either an egg or peanut butter, or scrambled eggs with toast and jelly. Those are similar to what I eat at home. Here for lunch we have wraps often which is what I eat at home, with salad and fruit. I’m usually a sandwich/wrap person for lunch. Nothing fancy and not a huge meal. At Green Mountain I eat an afternoon snack usually of fruit and a little protein like nut butter or cheese. And dinner is always a basic protein like chicken, turkey, or fish with a grain and veggies. Same for at home… I cook a lot of chicken and fish for myself. Here I have some sort of dessert every night even if it’s just pudding or fruit crisp, but at home I usually only have it a couple times a week. And also I eat a snack of triscuits and cheese every night here. Yummy!
So there ya have it! That’s what I eat!
And finally, Josie asked:
Did you ever struggle with emotional eating? Do you still? If so, what is your strategy for not doing it?
Good question! I have a pretty long history with emotional eating much of which comes from family issues that caused me to eat. I still struggle with it, even here in a pretty controlled environment where I’m trying to work on the issues. I feel like I am making some progress in being able to handle my emotions better and react in better ways but I know that this isn’t an issue that can be “cured” or entirely fixed in 3 months when I’ve been doing it almost 20 years. So my strategy is basically to eat mindfully and more importantly be mindful of my thoughts and feelings. If I can catch the stress or negative emotions first and sort them out before I turn to food I consider that a win. But I know that probably won’t always happen, so I’m okay with knowing I will eventually use to food to cope and that is okay and even healthy as long as I’m not doing it all the time.
So…. there ya go!!! The food/eating edition of Ask Mary Anything! Woohoo!! Now I’m hungry… is it time for a snack? No? Darn. Well then… just leave me a comment tell me:
Okay, young lady. I’m going to ask one time nicely and then things are going to get ugly: are you going to have your mother stop harrassing my son or am I going to have to put a stop to it myself. My Jack is a very sensitive, caring person and her constant phone calls and threatening emails are unnerving him.
You talk to her.
Or I will.
Oh, I love your blog, btw!
Very informative post. I’m a kettlebell trainer and have been in the iron game for over 25 years but I must admit I’m not as knowledgeable about nutrition and eating well as I should be. Found your blog from Twitter. I’ll check in often.
A foodie Q&A is a great idea! If I was a food item I’d be chocolate because it’s the best food ever in my opinion :O). Thanks for checking out my blog – look fwd to reading more of yours!
If I was a food item and I wanted to live forever, I’d be a twinkie or a snoball.
LOL @ Kyra…so true…a McDonald’s kids me al may last forever too!!
Mary…I am loving the Q&A posts…love getting into your head…even if just for a few moments! :)
@Shirley Sh*t
I can’t believe Jack got so scared he had to go tell his mommy. GEEZ!! Baby much?
@Beth
I think you are right about chocolate.
@Kyra
Haha! Lasting forever is a great idea. Twinkies can survive almost anything. Hehe.
@Trish
A Mickey D’s happy meal might last forever. I kinda like them though. Yummm. Glad you like the posts! Hehe, my head is a strange place sometimes… the thoughts are always moving around at lightning speed.
Very interesting! :)
I don’t know what food I’d be though!
I loved hearing about your food stuff! You know, so many people are pizza fans & I am so glad I am not…. now the crust of the pizza, that is a different story! :-)
Are you a professional journalist? You write very well.
Q&A sessions like these always really awaken the nosy neighbor in me! I love hearing about other folks’ strengths, weaknesses, and tips/tricks.
For me, food is really closely linked to my routine. For example, if I work out in the morning, it majorly impacts my food choices for the rest of the day. If I skip it or push it back, I’m more likely to snack or eat emotionally. Its like there is a little switch in my head and as long as my routine stays constant, the switch stays put.
of course, there are always good days and bad days!

Yogurt pretzels because that is what I am craving right now.
Ha! Ha! Poor Jack, but I resent the comment about the phone calls, never did never will, but you must need someone, to be so upset you lie to your mom.
Mary, everyone that reads your blog is so much the better for it. I had to take your lighted pumpkin off my screen saver this morning, so I put the picture of your flowers on it, the one you took of just the flowers, everyone loves it.
Take care baby and see you soon!
But really someone with the name Jack S*t can not be that sensitive. I promise I will not say anything about him again, I never go where I am not wanted. But it was fun!!
MOM
Well, we have at least one thing in common, Mary: our mothers both get intoxicated and make crazy comments on blogs.
@Jody
Mmm, the crust is delicious!! That might be my favorite part. On some pizzas at least. :)
@Mackeran
Thanks for the compliment about my writing! I did study journalism in school but I am not currently a professional journalist.
@Gertie Stein
Hehe, I love reading Q&A sessions too, that’s why I wanted to do one. It’s interesting to know what people want to know and seeing their reaction when I answer. I definitely understand what you are saying about food and I think it is that way for a lot of people.
I like your blog name!! Hehe. ;)
@Tony
Yogurt pretzels sound super delicious right now… thanks to your comment. That’s not even something I normally eat but they sound yummy.
@Mom
Jack has issues, it’s okay. One day he will work them out. .. Glad everyone likes the blog! I have more pictures I will email you soon. :)
@JackSht
My mom would probably be insulted that you insinuated she boozes it up. So hopefully she won’t come back and read these comments.
I love the comments here! OF course I totally love the post and the writer!
I would have to be the one thing I cannot say no to: A BROWNIE!! I steer clear of them because they are so deliciously evil! I may not be evil but sometimes I like to be naughty! haha
I totally love the Q & A’s ~ I may have to borrow your idea here and see what my readers want to know/ask of me.
You rock!
keep it real, jen
Great information! Thanks! I would be a slice of turtle cheesecake, LOL
I tend to buy the same things over and over at the grocery store too. And it seems like we’re ALWAYS out of something.. Lol. I cannot really picture myself as a piece of food. I guess it would be something tasty, and slightly unhealthy.
Thanks for answering my question (and the others as well). Your honesty is refreshing. It’s nice to know I am not the only one who struggles with eating to cope…Thanks for sharing your strategy, and so much of yourself on this blog!
What do you like most veg or non veg.
Hi, I found you and your blog interesting and would continue to read on Google Reader. Just to mention there is something weird with the links in the post, and contain dates twice as 2009/11/02/2009/10/13/this-is-progress/
