Bikes, Bikes, Bikes

Guys, I am so loving my life right now.

Sure it would be even better if I could get a full time job or a rich sugar daddy to pay for everything (kidding!!), but I really love the direction of my life right now regarding my health and well being.  I’ve already told you about moving out and the 5k in a couple weeks.  Now I need to tell you about my newest adventure.

After church today I went with my married friends Chris and Hilary to visit a bike shop they have been going to.  Its a community bike shop in Memphis that recycles and repairs bikes.  The way it works is people can go there and work on the bikes for 10 hours and then pay 40 dollars to build their own custom bike.  Its a pretty cool deal because you learn about bikes and how to take care of the one you get.  Also, once you have a bike you can bring it any time for a new part or repairs.  You just pick the parts from the ones that are recycled from all the donated bicycles.  The shop also builds bikes for groups and the hostel nearby for their use.

If you haven’t guessed yet.. I’m getting a bicycle!  I put in 2.5 hours today and within two weeks or so I will start working on my own bike.  Once I have finished my 10 volunteer hours I will get to choose my frame from the warehouse and then start building my custom bike.  I saw some of the bikes people were working on while I was there and they looked really nice.  Apparently the bike shop gets some really nice bike donations.  I am so excited!  I plan  on building two bikes actually.  I want one that I can ride around town and ride to work once I live closer to work.  I also want to (eventually) build a bike I can use in triathlons.  By the time I get to building a triathlon bike my friend Chris should be a mechanic at the bike shop (he is starting to shadow a mechanic this week) and he can help me.

Also, Chris said once I build my first bike we can go ride for the three hours on Thursdays.  He has that period of time in between his classes and when he is going to do his work as a mechanic shadow so he said since I will live close to the bike shop we could get our bikes and go explore.  I am very excited about that because it will give me another friend who wants to do something active together.  Maybe its just the spring weather but everyone is more active right now which makes my life much better.   The more I workout and the more active I am the better I feel.  So this is all great news!

just found your site. A new bike sounds like fun. I am too scared to get on a road bike so for now I do spin. Good luck in the 5k. Don’t we all want a sugar daddy lol.

That is a pretty cool business you have found. It will be great to learn about how to work on a bike by building your own.

Congrats on getting a bike! You’ll love it! (can you tell I’m a bike lover…in fact it’s my favorite form of exercise).

The bike shop and they way they operate things sounds absolutely phenominal! Wish we had something like that close to where I live!!!
