In the last two days I have received compliments from two different people saying I looked thinner/leaner/better. This was completely shocking to me because I have been gaining weight lately instead of losing. Don’t say it might be muscle, because its not. Promise. Its lots of fast food and alcoholic beverages consumed in the last two weeks (most just the last couple of weekends). I know exactly why I have been regaining weight. That is what makes these compliments so strange. I didn’t get any compliments a month ago when I was much thinner for the wedding I was in. No one seemed to even notice that I had slimmed down a bit unless I told them. But now, when I feel and am fatter, people think I look thinner? I don’t get it but maybe I do actually appear thinner somehow. Don’t get me wrong: I am not complaining. Everyone loves compliments and I wish I got and gave more of them.

Sometimes people don’t notice until several months later. When they see you, they’re not really looking, just assuming you’re the same as before. Then one day they look at you properly and wonder where the weight has gone. So they’re comparing you to the last time they looked properly, rather than the last time they actually saw you :)

Yeah, when I was still around my highest weight people would compliment me on weight loss, knowing full well I had gained weight. Guess they were trying to make me feel better.

@ Kim Ayres: That is a very good point. Especially since weight loss is a gradual thing (weight gain too usually) so people don’t notice right away.
@ Tony: So they are pity compliments? Awww lol.
