Thoughts On Dance Your Ass Off

July 2, 2009 by Mary

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for details.

Guess what? I’m going to see Jabbawockeez + Jesse McCartney + New Kids on the Block tonight thanks to some free tickets.  I’m taking the night of from exercise, even though my back already feels better.  I’m pretty excited to see Jabbawockeez perform since I’m so into dancing lately.

Speaking of dancing, have you seen Dance Your Ass Off yet? I watched it for the first time last night. The show is a cross between Dancing With The Stars and The Biggest Loser. They perform dance routines and weigh in weekly to compete against each other.

The first girl I watched dance was just so excited to be dancing and performing that I couldn’t help but smile. After her performance she got on the scale to find out how much weight she had lost that week. The score the judges gave her for the dance was then added to her percentage of weight loss for her final score.

Reasons I Love Dance Your Ass Off

  • Dancing is FUN. They are right about one thing – Dancing is fun!! Dancing is both fun to do and fun to watch. When you are dancing you don’t realize that it is actually exercise too. Last week I attended my first Zumba class. I had never been to a dance like class before and left loving the workout because it was so fun. I forgot I was working out as I tried to learn the steps then just go with the flow. Dancing is fun whether you are doing it intentionally to lose weight or not.
  • The nutritionist. The contestants seem to be getting good nutritional advice from the nutritionist on the show. Sometimes, especially on Biggest Loser, I question the advice and time the contestants spend getting real advice. I’m not totally sure how much time they are getting with her on this show, but the clips I have seen show her giving good advice. And good advice on how to eat is definitely what they need.
  • It shows that fat people can be active. The fact that this show exists helps further eliminate the idea that overweight people are lazy and can’t do anything. Of course the contestants have more trouble doing some things, and seem to tire out, but they are out there doing routines that some skinny minnies can’t even do. It might take more effort when you are heavier (it definitely does), but these people show that it can be done. Being overweight does not mean you have to sit on the couch.
  • It shows that you don’t have to wait to have fun. Related to the above fact, it also shows that you don’t have to wait to do things. Just because you are still overweight doesn’t mean you can’t dance. In fact it means you shouldn’t wait. These people don’t have to weigh 130 pounds to dance. Neither do you. Get up and dance. Have fun and forget about waiting for the perfect body before you dance.

Reasons I Don’t Like Dance Your Ass Off

I can’t think of any. When the show first came on I wanted to hate it. I did. I wrote down reasons why I hated it so I could write about them later. Now that I am to that point the reasons no longer stand up. I can talk myself out of each one if I use a different perspective to view the show.

For example, I wrote that I didn’t like it because it is so focused on looks. But then the women put on the outfits, skimpy as they can be, to dance in and say things like, “This looks hot. I look hot.” They don’t seem to care that it is focused on looks. They don’t seem to think they should look bad. Why should I?

Some people seem to think the people on the show are being mocked.  “Omg, they are embarassing themselves!  Everyone is making fun of them!”  I don’t think so.  I agree with the perspective that the contests have more courage, confidence, and talent than I do.  I’m in awe of how well they dance.

The reasons I love the show far outweigh the reasons why I could possibly hate it. (Except the judges. I could do without them and their useless commentary.) If you purposely view the show with a positive perspective you will love it.

Have you seen the show? What did you think?

I was really looking forward to this show. So disappointed. I like the losing weight aspect of it all, but the dancing was just blah. I sort of expected it to be up to par with Dancing with the Stars (I’m assuming this is where the whole Dance Your Ass Off concept originated from), but really it’s a sort of dumdum version. I don’t know why I think that. It just really didn’t hold my attention.

I totally loved it, was in awe of ALL those people getting up there showing their stuff. I feel they are miles beyond me in terms of self confidence, etc. I LOVED it.

I have not watched this but saw all the commercials. With your review, I just might. Anything that helps a person love themselves not matter what size is a positive to me! Plus giving them sound nutritional advice is key!

I simply can not stand Marissa Jaret-Winokur. She ruined weeks and weeks of Dancing with the Stars for me.

You are totally right, though. Dancing is SO fun.

The reasons for love the Dance for your ass off is appropriate I think there should not be any reason to dislike the Dance because Dancing is beneficial for everyone.

I need to watch this now.
I purposefully avoided it as I watched WIPEOUT once (seen it?) and cringed and loathed how it mocked people mercilessly.

I’ve not watched it, and swore I wouldn’t. As a previously obese person I just couldn’t image myself dancing around at 300 pounds. But, because of your post I’ll give the show a shot. These days, I do love to dance around with my little children. Fortunately, they don’t realize I really CAN’T dance!!

I haven’t seen the show, but it sounds interesting. I too, will probably not give the show a chance though simply because I don’t really watch TV at all. Probably not going to start for this. :-) It is just not something I am willing to sacrifice time for at this point in my life.

I’ve seen the show. In fact, I just posted about it myself! I agree with you on every point, actually. All of the contestants seem genuinely happy to be there, and while right now the dancing was only ho-hum, I imagine that it will improve as the weeks go on. I look forward to watching the progression of the quality of the dancing and the size of the dancers!

I obviously won’t get to see this show, but it sounds like fun! I used to dance a lot, so I don’t know why I always got involved with men who don’t dance. My husband and I went to a dance class a few times, but he hated it with a passion! I’m convinced that dancing was one of the reasons I stayed in shape when I was young.

  19. What about the losers??? says

    July 5, 2009 at 10:15 pm

I think it’s awesome to see professional dancers – whose professions are dependent on health and fitness working to help people who need that knowledge to benefit their self-images and personal health.

The only thing that bothers me is that they eliminate contestants. These people are trying to better their lives and health….eliminating them won’t help them accomplish this. They should find a way to continue the competition through rankings and not elimitations….
