Eats: Sushi, Sushi, Sushi!

Lately I’ve been completely obsessed with eating sushi the last two weeks.

Sushi teriyaki chicken

Sushi is one food that I eat all the time when it sounds good and then get tired of it and avoid it for six months. I used to eat it pretty frequently when I was in Memphis but went through a I-hate-sushi period for a while. I won’t eat sushi if I’m not in the mood for it but when I’m in the mood I HAVE TO HAVE IT!

In the past two weeks I’ve eaten sushi at least 5 times. For me that’s a LOT. Basically if I’ve eaten outside my house I’ve eaten sushi. And it’s been so, so, good.

My favorite option right now is sushi from St. Pierre’s. It’s a chain here in NZ that has decent enough sushi that works out to be a pretty healthy option. They have weekly deals where the sushi of the day is only $5.40 making it a good deal for lunch.

Last week I grabbed a salmon roll and this week I bought a teriyaki chicken roll. Both were the sushi deal of the day and both were delicious.

The nutritional stats aren’t too bad either:

I’m counting calories right now and that fits into my day well since I aim for 500 calories or so for lunch. Pretty good for a satisfying sushi lunch!

The only issue with sushi is the high sodium in the sushi and the super sodium packed soy sauce that goes so well with it. I keep the soy sauce to the bare minimum for taste. Plus I drink a ton of extra water on the days when I eat sushi and keep my other meals for the day very low in sodium.

Do you like to eat sushi? What’s your favorite sushi to eat?

I love sushi too, and am craving it like crazy now that I can’t have it! (Some foods are currently off limits for health reasons, boo.) Something I like to do to watch the sodium is to make a “sushi bowl” at home – make some rice, top it with chopped cucumber and avocado and whatever fish you like (I usually do smoked salmon or artificial crab meat). Delicious!

OMG I love rolls with cream cheese. I don’t get them too often anymore but when I first started eating sushi I always ordered a philly roll. Every single time for like 6 months. So, so good.

Being 1/8 Japanese, I adore sushi! It’s super fun to make at home too!

I wish I had sushi making skills. I just don’t. It’s one thing I will probably ALWAYS buy already made.

Don’t they have the low sodium soy sauce? Every place I’ve ever been to for sushi has it… I haven’t had sushi in two months, and that one then was only ok. I should get some this weekend. Mmm….. My favorite sushi is probably unagi, but really I like everything except not tempura so much, greasy bleh gives me a tummy ache. Oh, and nothing with cream cheese. I like that on bagels but it’s gross on sushi to me. YAY SUSHI!

Nope. I am used to having low sodium soy sauce from every place in the USA but I haven’t seen it once here. Maybe they have it at restaurants and I just have to ask. I’ll see next time I go, but I just assumed theyd didn’t have any since it wasn’t out with the regular soy sauce.

I LOVE Sushi. So much I’m trying to make it! I’ve also seen recipes that swap out the ‘rice’ for ‘cauliflower rice’ (where the cauliflower is grated and used as a substitute) which I want to try, because I think the rice content is probably the one thing that doesn’t suit my nutrition needs – high sodium soy sauce is fine for me as my blood pressure sometimes gets too low.

Lucky you needing sodium and having low blood pressure! Haha. I actually don’t have high blood pressure but since my mom has always had it for as long as I’ve known her I figure I should be careful now and avoid problems later!

I LOVE sushi and its great because it yummy as well as healthy. I also go through phases where by I am obsessed with the stuff and then avoid it for months (this normally changes with the altering of seasons). x

I love sushi, but rarely get to eat it! My husband is allergic to seafood and poultry, so it just doesn’t interest him. If he’s out of town, I’ll pick some up to go or I’ll go with some girlfriends! Love, Love sushi!
