When I was living in Europe I fell in love with gyros and doner kebabs. It was my go-to food choice from street vendors and something I desperately missed when I came back to live in Tennessee. Luckily, I do have lots of options now for gyros thanks to multiple restaurants and food trucks around town. (Still looking for a place that will give me the Turkish Doner Kebab I remember and love!)
Recently I tried out McKnight’s European Cuisine here in Memphis since their food truck was parked within walking distance.
I’m a huge fan of Memphis food trucks and hope to try them all at some point, so I was happy to stumble across this new-to-me option. On their menu a couple things caught my eye:
- wienerschnitzel
- chicken gyros
- sausage and cheese platter
- bratwurst & sauerkraut
- german potato salad
I was craving something light so I chose the chicken gyro to test out this particular food truck. She asked if tzatziki sauce and everything on it, which of course I did.
After a few minutes standing around waiting I was presented with this chicken gyro.
I was more than happy with the presentation. The bright colors made me happy before I even started eating!
The gyro came with lettuce, red onion, green bell pepper, chicken, and lots of tzatziki sauce all wrapped up in a warm pita.
The tzatziki sauce gave it a refreshing and light taste thanks to the cucumber and dill. It wasn’t strong at all so the dish had a mild flavor profile. I appreciated the raw onion for the stronger flavor it added and the raw pepper gave it a nice crunch. The chicken itself wasn’t anything special and I had hoped for more seasoning. I also admit to being biased to meat shaved thinly off a spit rather than big chunks due to my preference for doner kebabs I first fell in love with.
Despite that I still loved this chicken gyro as a lunch! It was light and tasty without being over powering. It was the right amount of food and the right price for a good lunch. I’m definitely planning to visit this food truck again and try out other European cuisine options that will remind me of my European adventures. Can’t wait!
If you’re in the area and want to check out this food truck, visit their Facebook page for updates on their whereabouts.
