Failure… Its Sabotage, Right?

January 20, 2009 by Mary

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for details.

I walk in and look around at all the people waiting to hear my healthy you challenge update. Thanks for coming, but we need to discuss something first.

“Ok guys, I’m gaining weight.  Who is sabotaging my weight loss efforts?”

Keeps looking around.  Eyes land on my blog readers.  They are the ones I talk to every day about my weight and healthy living after all.  It must be them secretly sabotaging my efforts.

“It’s not us!  We give you nothing but unconditional love, support, and encouragement.  We are always here for you to help you on your weight loss journey.”

Fine. It must be someone else.

Aha!  Its the Weight Watchers people.  They promised weight loss and thats something that has not yet been seen.

“Look Mary, it might not be working out for you, but don’t blame us.  We can’t help it if you keep missing weekend meetings.  We didn’t choose that time for you and we definitely are not sabotaging you.  We are trying to help you!”

Ok then.

After looking around for another minute her eyes stop on my family. Of course its them, who else would it be?

“No, no, no.  Its not us.  Not this time.  I know I have let them screw up your attempts before and I have helped sometimes too.  But not this time.  We have been buying you healthy food and I’ve been cooking you good meals.  This isn’t our fault.”

Well, thats normally who sabotages my weight loss efforts.  Must be the so-called friends then.

“We aren’t sabotaging your weight loss.  Sometimes we put you in situation that are not the best, but its not like there aren’t healthy options available in addition to the bad ones.  You are the one that orders the unhealthy food and drinks.  We were cool with your decision to skip alcohol or choose a salad.  We don’t force you to do anything, we just want you to be with us.”

Well, ok, believable.  But still, someone must be behind my failure to lose weight.

I keep looking around but can’t figure it out.  Finally someone explains it to me.

“No one is sabotaging you Mary.  We are all people who love and support your efforts.  We want you to lose weight.  We want you to be healthy.  The only person who doesn’t think you can do this is you.  You are the only person sabatoging your weight loss.  You are the one that needs to do this and you are the only one stopping yourself.”

I look down trying to avoid eye contact.  Ugh.

You are probably right.

The good news is that YOU are also the one capable of saving yourself. As corny as it sounds (and as difficult as it is to DO at first), try starting each morning with a hard stare in the mirror while you tell yourself 10 times, “I will be strong and healthy today.” Then go write it down 10 times along with the date. When you’re tempted to go off-path, repeat the process. YOU can do this, Mary, I know you can.

Yeah, it’s so easy to blame others. I went through a long period of that. Very insightful comments. Hang in there and good luck in finding what works for you!

Thanks guys. I know that I can do it, its just that I need to stop looking for excuses outside of myself. When I blame other people I take responsibility away from myself. And I need to take charge and take responsibility of this area of my life. So this is all about taking charge of everything. I’m still trying to figure out what exactly works for me with eating and scheduling stuff and all. I haven’t been doing what works lately so I will be changing my approach, going back to the stuff that worked in the past. Its just that I need to do it and stop expecting others to make this work. Thanks for the encouragement. :)
