Favorite Magazines

I love magazines.

Completely.

And forever.

Back in the day when I wanted to be a journalist (all through high school and when I studied journalism in college) I really wanted to work for a magazine. In fact my dream job as a teenager was a magazine writer/editor. I loved reading magazines so much back then. Although my dream of being employed by a magazine is gone, I still love magazines.

I go through phases of liking certain magazines. For instance, when I first started losing weight in college I read Shape & Fitness magazines religiously. They were my best friends while knocking out 30 minutes of cardio at the gym.

These days my fitness magazine preferences have changed.

My current favorite health & fitness magazines are Oxygen and Muscle & Fitness Hers.

fitness magazines

It makes sense that as I’ve moved more towards a focus on weight lifting and eating a clean(er) diet with enough protein that I’m reading magazines that support this kind of healthy lifestyle. I really enjoy these magazines as I’ve learned a lot through them and have picked up a few good recipes and workouts. I recommend reading both.

I also read other magazines when I have time/money to do so. My other favorite magazines (and their “genre” type):

  • Time (News)
  • Cooking Light (Food)
  • Clean Eating (Food)
  • Forbes (Business/Finance)
  • Kiplinger’s (Personal Finance)
  • Sports Illustrated (Sports)

Outside of fitness magazines I tend to read more educational/newsy type things. I used to love Seventeen magazine when I was in high school but I grew out of it and never latched on to the gossipy or fluffy women’s magazines. I admit though that sometimes I flip through these kind (usually People) at supermarket checkouts when the line is long.

What are your favorite health & fitness magazines? What are your favorite magazines in any genre?

I am a self proclaimed magazine addict! The one magazine I buy every week without fail is People magazine. Then I will purchase various fitness/health magazines, mostly: Prevention, Fitness, Health, First.. I just bought my first Oxygen mag — it retails for 6.99 in Canada which I think is quite steep but I can get it 30 percent off at Costco. Haven’t read it yet, but if it is really good maybe I will occassionally spend the 6.99 to pick it up!

I am sure there are othere mags I buy.. these are just the ones I thought of off the top of my head.

I love magazines. I read them on the treadmill and while on the stationary bike to make the time go faster. I subscribe to Fitness, Shape, Health, and WW magazine.

I like to read my fitness magazines like Shape or anything similar online so I can bookmark pertinent stuff to come back to. They all cost so much (I mean $10 for a Family Circle holiday edition!? Puh-LEEZ!) that I can’t justify buying them regularly.

That said I do have a long running subscription to Hawaii magazine but that’s a business expense and I’ve got Conde Nast Traveler that I won’t likely renew once the subscription runs out.

MORE for the “mature” content and thought-provoking articles.
EATING WELL for food news/articles and recipes.
    WOMEN’S HEALTH for fitness/food/girlie stuff.
HORTICULTURE and/or THE HERB COMPANION for gardening.
FAMILY FUN for my middle school daughter – crafts, recipes, stories about kids/families.

Of course, I can only afford to get about two of these at any given time! :-)

I am fond of O magazine (Oprah’s work). She covers a wide range of topics that inspire me.

I agree! I also love reading health and fitness magazines because if you try to search for tips on losing weight or staying healthy online, your bombarded with a surplus of tips and tricks. But with these magazines, they have writers and editors who have already done all the research and compiled straight articles that really aim to help you. It’s scary to think what it will be like in a few years when all printed publications will be dying out and put online.

I am SUCH a magazine junkie! In fact, that’s why I work at one now ;-)

I like what you said about picking the magazines that support the kind of diet you strive for. I tend to read a lot of Women’s Health and Self, for their nutrition and positive-life tips. I’ll do Shape and Fitness sometimes. I also pick up lots of other food/fitness magazines like Runner’s World, Yoga Journal, Clean Living, Cooking Light, Saveur and Bon Appetit. Though I’ve never checked out Oxygen or Muscle & Fitness Hers, since my focus hasn’t really been on weight lifting. I’ll have to add them to my list of ones to check out, though!

Have a wonderful, magazine filled day!!

I LOVE the 2 mags you pictured! LOVE!!! I also like Clean eating! I watch cable news for a lot of the other stuff but it is so depressing & crazy out there right now that I like my fitness stuff better! :-)

That woman has fantastic abs! I’ve gotten various magazines over the years – Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, Discover, Archaeology, Cosmo (to laugh at), Glamour, Shape, W…but somehow I have the hardest time getting through an issue. There’s so much going on, I get all add and cant focus. Also, they are an awkward size, and it’s hard to hold it up and the pages are flimsy for turning over. Actually I have a random dwell subscription that I never paid for that comes to work and Ive not read a single issue lol. I’m def more of a book reader than magazines. Or, for short things, blogs and online articles. I think Discover was my favorite one out of all of them over the years though. So interesting!
