Today I was feeling much better so I decided to ahead and workout. After resting the day before and giving myself fluids I felt a lot better. A minor cold wasn’t enough to stop me from working out so I decided to follow through with my training session.
I did my first brick workout!
Even though it involved much more walking than running it was a strange feeling to be running after biking. I can see why bricks are so important – it’s an interesting thing to get used to doing. The transition from swimming to biking seems much easier. But I have a few weeks to work on it so I’m not too worried. I’ve already come to terms with the fact that I’ll be walking a good chunk of my first tri so really whatever happens happens. I’m just going to try to prepare as best as I can.
The only bad thing about my workout is that I got a side stitch! Ouchies! I can’t even remember the last time that happened. It was also my first time running on the treadmill in a long time because I normally run on grass. At first running on the treadmill felt strange. I had no idea how fast to set the treadmill since I don’t know how fast I run (and it’s not in mph! ah!) so there was some experimenting with pace at first. That threw off how I was running and my knee started to hurt but after adjusting I felt fine. I’m starting to figure out how to run properly so I don’t cause myself any pain. Win!
Overall it was a good workout and I’m glad I did it.
Merry Go Round
Get ready for some randomness and awesome links! :)
Congrats to everyone that ran the Las Vegas half-marathon and marathon last weekend! I loved reading all the race recaps. You should definitely check out all of them for some inspiration: Foodie McBody, A Healthy Dad, Mrs. Fatass, Fit Mac Daddy, Operation Jack.
Speaking of inspiration, I created an inspiration page for myself (and you). It’s just a collection of physically inspiring YouTube videos that make me feel like I can do anything. They are things good for watching before I have to complete a training session or something else. If you have any suggestions for awesome videos, please let me know!
Congrats to Steve from Nerd Fitness who made it onto Gizmodo with his awesome travel hacking post. Read my interview with Steve and check out his Rebel Fitness Guide (it’s pretty awesome).
Still looking for Christmas gifts? Check out the charity blogger babes calendar! It’s an awesome calendar full of cool healthy living and fitness bloggers that helps support cancer research.
Also, if you plan on doing any Christmas shopping on Amazon, feel free to use my affiliate link. I’ll get a few pennies (seriously, pennies). I mean, if you are shopping anyway. ;)
Thanks for the shout-out! And good for you saying BOO to the cold and getting back out there. Darn kids and their darn germs!
Woohoo first brick workout! Even though physically I think it feels weirder to go from bike to run, I think logistically its harder to go from swim to bike during the race (with clothes, shoes, being wet, etc).
Probably correct with the swim to bike transition. There isn’t anyway to change at the race so you have to stay wet until you aren’t anymore. Not sure I’m going to be happy with that.
Nicely done on the brick workout! Woot! Woot!
As for the side stitch, do you tend to exhale when your right foot hits the ground or your left foot? I remember Julia the running coach on 2 Fit Chicks recommending to breathe out when you land on your left foot. (Also saw something on about.com that exhaling when your right foot hits the ground puts pressure on the liver, so that might be why she recommended changing when you exhale.)
I honestly don’t know. I hadn’t thought about it. It’s enough trouble for me to remember to breathe at all. I’ll pay attention next time and see what I do.
Congrats on that workout Mary!!! You go.. you, not me! ;-)
Love all the links & I can’t believe you made up another page!!! You are a blogging & computer queen!
I didn’t know what a brick workout was…I pictured you doing exercises using bricks instead of weights. That seemed odd, and scratchy on your hands, so I googled it. LOL. Now I know. When I click the amazon link it just goes to what looks like my regular amazon page… I don’t think that I will be buying anything else, I think I’m done with xmas presents..but who knows. :)
It’s supposed to look like the regular amazon page. ;) It tracks where the click came from so I get credit for anything you buy after that.
Also… LOL at the brick workout comment. I totally should have explained that! I forget not everyone knows about triathlon stuff.
lol thats what google is for. and its a funny image, you with the bricks. maybe even you building a brick wall as a workout. so it gave me a laugh.
