Yesterday I planned on going to my new gym to workout in the morning. Morning came and went and I planned on going after lunch. That time came and went and I planned on going before dinner. I almost skipped it again but I made myself get up and go because I wanted to try it out.
I wasn’t sure if I would be able to get a machine because it was the time that most people hit the gyms (after work rush) but I managed to get one of the elliptical machines. Hurray! I had missed the elliptical so much in the last few months. It was like hanging out with an old friend. And old friend that has one of those cool little fans attached to it to cool me down. I love those!
Started my workout with the intention of doing 30 minutes, but almost quit at 20. I kept thinking about needing to make dinner and all the other stuff I needed to do at home. But I decided to go the full 30 minutes and I’m glad I did. I left red faced, sweating, and felt like I actually did something, thanks to that last ten minutes.
The new relationship with this gym is off to a good start. I love the my friend works out there and we will probably end up working out together a few times. And apparently I also know one of the two personal trainers that work there. I’m sure I probably know more people that workout there, I just don’t know when or if they go. I was supposed to be working out this morning with my friend Candace, but she hasn’t texted me yet. So I may not do that and just go walk with my mom later.
The byproduct of my focus and excitement to reach my new goal is that I’m making my mom’s life a little bit healthier. Before we went to Gatlinburg I started her walking and she was doing around 2 miles a day. Lately Tennessee has had a lot of snow and she quit. Now that I’m home she is hopefully going to start again (right mom?) because I will go with her. I’m also now planning and cooking meals “in exchange for free rent.” I’m making healthy meals and planning on finding more recipes to try out, which in the end will make us both healthier (my brothers don’t eat what I make).
So with the healthy cooking and renewed vigor for exercise I’m on my way to losing! I’m super excited that this is happening at home instead of me crumbling into a depressed ball of emotional sugar eating. Let me tell you – that could happen all to easily right now. But I’m not letting it happen. All my past successess and baby steps on this journey have added up and are pushing me to be stronger and keep going. The foundation has been built and I’m not going back.
Now… more exercise!
UPDATE: Since i’ve been talked into running the 5k at Fitbloggin (or at least running half of it) I’m going to try to get ready for that in the next month!! Yeah! I can do this! Running will not defeat me again!
You go, girl!!! :)
Awesome! I love that feeling when you feel that you accomplished a good workout!

Congrats on getting there :) I used to be supppper intimidated by the gym and would psyche myself out of going, it was ridic. Forcing my butt to get there was harder than doing the workout!

I like that you are doing the race!
And free rent sounds good to me. ;)

Eat slowly and you’ll eat less. When you are hungry and start eating, your mind tells your body that food is on the way. However if you eat quickly, your stomach does not alert your brain that it is full until after you are already finished. So if you slow down your eating your mind and body will have a chance to communicate with one another. As a result you will find that you actually need to eat less than normal to feel full. You’ll also eliminate bloating caused by excess gases that can be a problem when you eat too fast.
I would be lying if I didn’t say that running isn’t still extremely intimidating to me- but I am confident you will have NO problem doing the 5k! Right now it is my goal to run one in July- ehhh….slow down time- I’m not ready! :)
p.s. and yes, you will be receiving an email from me shortly!
Good job for pushing to complete your workout. What a great sense of accomplishment.
And you can totally do the 5K. Try the Galloway method to complete the entire thing.

Great news about the gym! I’ve never been on an elliptical, far too much co-ordination needed!
The 5K sound great! I’ve got my first 5k in two week!

Good luck with your 5k!
Awesome stuff!! I looked at a gym here in Corinth last night and I’m reallllly thinkin about joining. They are having a 5K in Holly Springs, MS (about 35 mins or so from Memphis?) on April 17th. I think I’m gonna sign up! You should too. Altho i’m sooo not much of a jogger (working on that) so I will be walking a lot of it I fear :)

Ah, you live in Corinth! I’ve been there a ton of times!
April 17th is near my birthday and close to one year since I started actually losing weight. So… that could be cool. Get me the link or brochure or whatever and I can sign up! by then I should be able to jog/run most of it (I hope).
Go Mary. Good for you that you signed up for the 5K at FitBloggin. I was totally intimidated by it so I cheaped out for the 1 mile walk. maybe i’ll go further encouraged by everyone there. I’ve never done an organized run before…….See you there.

Hehe, to be fair, I did the same thing and chickened out and signed up for the 1 mile. But Roni said we could change our minds – which I immediately did when some other attendees convinced me to “run” with them.
Its great to see that you new lifestyle changes are rubbing off on others. By the way how where you the next morning after the workout?

I was fine. Walking a lot in New Zealand kept me in pretty good shape, it’s not like I let my fitness level completely slide or anything… there just wasn’t much variety.
Hey Mary have you thought about doing any weight training? I can’t remember if you’ve mentioned that in past posts. I’ve found I really like it. It makes me feel good about myself. :)

Hehe. I did weight training. I love weight training. But over the last month or so with the traveling it kind of went by the wayside. Definitely starting it up again with my new gym and I’m crazy excited about it.
Do be honest, I haven’t even looked at classes or know if they have any. I know between there and my mom’s gym I have access to if I go with her, I can go to some classes if I want. I think I will try out my new DVDs. ;)
*hugs*
Way to go!! Glad to hear that the gym is working out, and thanks for posting about the contract you’d signed. I haven’t talked to Anytime Fitness, but a 3 month contract sounds like a nice way to test & see if I’ll use it or not.

Don’t you love that feeling when you finally get your ass back to the gym? The after workout high is enough to want to do it, but the motivation to get there is what’s hard.

Be careful! Running is VERY addictive. Luckily in a good way! Good luck with the 5K, I had a ton of fun at my last one!

I’ve been meaning to comment on your recent blog posts! Setting your 100-lb goal is fan-freaking-tastic and I just know you’ll get there. If anyone is going to get there, it’s going to be you.
Joining a gym is a really great idea and I am glad that you stepped out of your comfort zone a little and chose a new gym. It can be an intimidating place, but it can also be very motivational. Nothing keeps me going like jogging beside someone who is absolutely crushing it on the treadmill, etc. I wrote a while back about how great it is to see people of all walks of life — all ages and sizes — at the gym. I may be a little further ahead of others who have just started their journey, but it’s so refreshing to see people put in some hard work and effort. I daydream about going up to people and giving them a huge hug and telling them to stick with it NO MATTER WHAT.
You don’t have to kill yourself. You just need to be consistent. I know you know that, but it’s worth repeating.
Congrats on under-taking the 5K challenge! Can’t wait to hear how it goes!

I wish you well on your new gym routine! You can do this!
I love the eliptical. But youre right im always working out at the gym after work, thinking how I need to get home for dinner, or to get ready for something I’m doing that night, or to make it to the tanning place which is closing soon, etc. I always say, if I didn’t have to work I would def work out longer. Esp for the cool classes that happen during the day. But even a little bit counts!
That’s great about your mom! I really wish I could get mine to walk and stuff…both my parents actually.
Good luck on the 5k!!!
