How I Am Using Twitter

March 14, 2009 by Mary

Over the last week I made the decision to change how I’m using the micro-blogging site Twitter. I will still use it to get great tips, articles, and links that people are posting on there.  But for my own posting I will be using Twitter as a food/exercise log.  I’ve tried numerous times to figure out a way to keep this kind of log because many studies say the people that track what they eat are more successful at losing weight.  I doubt they keep a public food journal, but for accountability and encouragement this will be a great experiment.  I will be posting what I eat whenever I eat something and all my workouts.  If you want to keep track of what I am doing you can see my Twitter updates on the right sidebar or you can follow me on Twitter.

Most “experts” would say that I’m doing it wrong.  They would say I’m not using Twitter correctly because no one wants to read about what I ate for lunch.  No one wants to know what I’m thinking about when I workout or make my dinner.  Well, to them I say SHUTUP.  I will use Twitter in whatever way it gives ME value.  They are all about giving others value, which is definitely a good thing, but on this one I am going to be selfish.  I am going to use it in the way that is best for me.  If you want to follow me and see the thoughts, actions as I try to eat and live healthier, that is great!  If not, don’t follow me.  No big deal.

    I’m purposefully avoiding Twitter, because I know that for me it would be a big ol’ time suck.

    It does impress me as a great way to do just what you’re describing. Good luck with it!

    Love Twitter! And I say go for it, use it whatever way you feel will work for you. And you never know, it might help someone who is following you.

    Came across your blog through Anti-Jared. I, too, have just started using Twitter as my food/exercise journal. Keep up the great work! I will be adding your journey to my Google Reader.

    @Cammy
    It could be a time suck but I try to limit that. And its great that you can use twitter by so many third party applications … I mean, I can even text my entries to Twitter!

    @Emily
    Thanks! I will have to follow you on Twitter!

    The experts are only trying to make money any which way they can, so for them Twitter is just another tool! For me it’s an awesome way to connect to interesting people and get to know them better…

    It really is what you want it to be, so gor for it!
