I never had breathing problems before moving to New Zealand.
There is a high number of respiratory problems in New Zealand. I read a report somewhere that said one in four New Zealand children is affected by respiratory disease. I think this is mostly because of poorly constructed cold, damp, moldy houses that are everywhere. I know that personally that’s part of my problem and probably part of why I developed asthma since being here.
Every morning when I wake up I have trouble breathing. I also now suffer from allergies and go through half a box of kleenex each morning. I spend about two to three hours coughing, sneezing, struggling to breathe and generally feeling miserable. It’s like I have a cold – every morning.
Sometimes by the end of the day after spending the evening inside I’ll have trouble breathing again. I’ll wheeze and have trouble taking a full breathe. Sometimes it will be more sudden. Lately it’s been happening after exercise and I’ve been coughing for a long period after exercising and having trouble catching my breathe.
These breathing problems are pretty new to me. New since I moved here. I’m honestly scared by the fact that sometimes I can’t take a full breathe. It’s scary to not be able to breathe and to be honest I don’t know what to do about it. I like to exercise but I’ve developed this annoying cough after doing any hard exercise. I coughed through the entire day after doing my triathlon. I coughed for a couple hours after Zumba. Anything that is good for my body leaves my lungs struggling to function.
For a while I could forget about the asthma until I really felt it. Now it’s never far from my mind because it happens more often and with stronger results. I have an inhaler and I use it when I need to but I still have to deal with the asthma and allergies and all of it. It’s a problem that isn’t going away as long as I live here, although being in better constructed houses does lessen the symptoms I feel.
Some mornings, like this one, I wish I could just breathe. I wish it wasn’t a struggle.
