Let The Vacation Begin

ZOMG!  I’m on VACATION!!!

I’m pretty excited to finally be here in Gatlinburg.  This morning I woke up and my mom and I headed out for the 7ish hour drive to get across the state of Tennessee into the mountains.

Isn’t it funny how a day of traveling even when you don’t do anything makes you crazy tired?  After sitting in the car all day I’ve gotten super tired!  I’m used to sitting for a bit then taking breaks and walking around.  Putting me in one place for hours upon hours makes me crazy.  I’m definitely going to try and sleep through as much of the flight to Australia as possible next week.

But we finally made it and have settled into the hotel room.  Since my mom has been walking a lot just for this trip we have a hotel that is a little out of the way from the main touristy strip in Gatlinburg so we can get a little extra walking in during the vacation.  I was grateful she wanted to do this, even though it is going to be freezing and possibly snowy when we are walking.  I feel like getting enough exercise in during this trip won’t be a problem!  Woohoo!

However, food is a different story.  I’m going to try and stay accountable to what I’m eating by posting it either on the blog or on twitter.  I might even take pictures if I can remember.  But already today I’ve eaten fast food twice!  TWICE!

Breakfast: McDonald’s sausage mcmuffin and hashbrown

Lunch: KFC 3 chicken strips, green beans, mashed potatoes, biscuit with honey

Better food choices could have been made, I’m sure.  But I’m on vacation remember?  We will hit up some decent restaurant places for future meals because I get sick of fast food super quick (already).

Update::  Went to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co for dinner and I didn’t have shrimp.

I had a salad with chicken and it was delicious!

The restaurant was pretty cool.  The waiters did trivia about the movie and there was stuff from the movie all over the place.   If you loved the movie you would love the restaurant.  Or if you loved shrimp.  My mom really loved the shrimp.

I like that last sign because it reminds me to stop, slow down, take a breathe, enjoy this.

This vacation is less about me having fun and more about my mom having a stress free break from her crazy daily life.  Her 60th birthday is Jan 16 so we are celebrating now and I am giving her this vacation as her present since she never does anything nice for herself.  You need to take time out from your stresses and worries to have a little fun now and again no matter who you are.  I’m trying to teach everyone I know this – starting with my mom!

So the plan for the next couple of days isn’t set.  We are just going to walk around and see what there is to see.  The only things I know we will do for sure are go on a ride to the top of a mountain so my mom can see the views and the aquarium because it is awesome.  Beyond that just good food and fun and no worrying about stuff at home!

What do you like to do on vacations?

You have to try Calhoun’s while you’re in Gatlinburg. Great local food. And if you’re in Knoxville, check out Louis’. It’s Italian, southern-style.

    Have a great vacation Mary!

We usually go to Italy for our vacation and try to stay at 3 or 4 different places. We go out almost everyday to do some sightseeing. We’re both people who don’t want to lay at the swimming pool all day. We have to do something. Otherwise I could stay at home if I don’t see anything.

You really have great willpower not to eat shrimp at Bubba Gumps! I’ve been to the one in Charleston, and I loved it. It’s making me hungry just thinking about it now.

Oh man, if you end up going back to Bubba Gumps, get the “I’m Stuffed” Shrimp. They are little bites of heaven. (Okay now I’m hungry) That’s sweet you’re doing this for your mom and it sounds like you’ll get some decent exercise in too. Stay warm!

Mmm. Bubba Gump is awesome. I ate at the one in San Francisco at Fisherman’s Wharf. So tasty. And I got every trivia question right.

On vacation, I like to go see friends. This is what all of my vacations have ever been since I became an adult. Last summer, I went to Iowa and Missouri to see friends, and I had an absolute blast. This year, it looks like it might be Seattle, which is one of my favorite places.

Other than that, I just like to go see things I have never seen, and do things I have never done.

I almost never go on vacations. The last real one I had was almost 2 yrs ago (going on one next month!). That was a dancing vacation. Most of my past vacations have been mixed work trips where I stay a couple extra days. Usually I like to go to some tasty restaurants (especially the local food type ones), see whatever local famous stuff is there, explore, maybe shop, maybe museum, and go out dancing at night, if possible. I think its really cool that you and your mom are taking a vacation together!! I love reading your blog because you’re visiting all sorts of places, so its like I can go too lol. HAVE FUN! (ps its cute I did not know forest gumps place existed in real life..it took me a bit to figure out what you meant about the movie..didnt associate that with the movie..that was so long ago!)
